Overview

Münze Deutschland is the brand of the Federal Republic of Germany responsible for the distribution of the country's collector and commemorative coins, selling directly to private and commercial customers. It is represented by the Bundesverwaltungsamt (BVA), a federal higher authority within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, and is subject to the technical supervision of the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF). Its history traces back to 1967, when the Federal Ministry of Finance commissioned the Bundesschuldenverwaltung to establish a sales office for collector coins.

History

According to the official history page, Münze Deutschland was founded in 1967. On 16 November 1967, the Federal Ministry of Finance commissioned the Bundesschuldenverwaltung to establish a sales office for collector coins, giving birth to the name and the well-known abbreviation VfS (Verkaufsstelle für Sammlermünzen). On 6 December 1967, the first coin issue day took place: the VfS began selling and shipping coins on behalf of the German minting institutions, with 5-DM collector coins initially the only products. In January 1970, the first 10-DM coin in proof quality was released, occasioned by the Olympic Games in Munich. In 2002, the VfS received its logo, and on 9 May 2002 and 9 September 2002, with the introduction of the euro, the first gold coins appeared: the 100-euro gold coin in May and the 200-euro gold coin in September. On 23 June 2010, the first 20-euro gold coin premiered with the series 'Deutscher Wald'. In 2015, the logo was revised. On 1 October 2015, the first 25-euro collector coin in fine silver appeared on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of German reunification. On 4 February 2016, the first 20-euro coin in sterling silver was released, replacing the previous 10-euro coins. On 14 April 2016, a world first appeared: the new 5-euro collector coin 'Planet Erde', featuring a polymer ring made of high-quality translucent plastic as a groundbreaking innovation in the coin world. On 24 May 2017, the first 50-euro coin followed.
