Overview

La7 is an Italian television channel whose modern identity emerged in 2001 from the former Telemontecarlo network. It operates as a national free-to-air broadcaster with a schedule centered on news, current affairs, political discussion, investigative reporting and selected entertainment programming. The channel is positioned as an editorially distinctive alternative to Italy's largest public and commercial broadcasters, particularly through its emphasis on long-form interviews, political debate and analysis of Italian public life. La7's lineage reaches back to Telemontecarlo, an Italian-language service associated with Monaco that began regular broadcasting in 1974. During its early years, the network was one of the principal alternatives to RAI and was notable for broadcasting in color before RAI introduced color television nationally. Its early programming combined general entertainment, journalism, sport and cultural content. Among the people associated with the network were sports journalist Gianni Brera, broadcaster Mike Bongiorno and journalist Indro Montanelli, whose newspaper-produced news and editorial program appeared on the service in the 1970s. The channel's ownership and programming changed repeatedly. RAI acquired a substantial stake in 1982, while Globo acquired most of the network in 1985. Under Globo, Telemontecarlo introduced Brazilian television content, including adapted telenovelas and series, while continuing to produce Italian entertainment, journalism and sports. The network also developed a Rome production center and experimented with more modern television-news presentation. Its sports portfolio included football, Formula 1, alpine skiing, yacht racing and major international events. Legal disputes over live broadcasting, growing competition from Fininvest's commercial networks and audience and financial difficulties weakened the service during the late 1980s and 1990s. The network was rebranded as La7 in 2001 after the Telemontecarlo era. In its current form, La7 is a generalist channel, but its strongest public identity is associated with journalism and political programming. Its output includes news bulletins, current-affairs formats, political talk shows, interviews, documentaries, investigative programs and entertainment. The channel's programming strategy has allowed it to occupy a recognizable position in the Italian television market without attempting to reproduce the scale or broad mass-market model of RAI or Mediaset. In 2013, La7 was acquired from Telecom Italia Media by Cairo Communication. Cairo Communication also operates the advertising-sales business through Cairo Pubblicità. The channel is distributed throughout Italy through digital terrestrial television and is available on satellite services including Sky Italia and Tivùsat. Cable distribution also makes it available to viewers in Switzerland. La7 has an additional channel, La7 Cinema, and uses professional voice-over and continuity services, including the voice of dubbing artist Francesco Prando. The brand remains active as a television and digital-media property under Cairo Communication.

History

La7's historical roots lie in Telemontecarlo, an Italian-language television service connected with Monaco. Experimental Italian-language broadcasts took place in the early 1970s, followed by the formal inauguration of the Italian service on 5 August 1974. The channel initially served as an important alternative to RAI, especially because it transmitted in color before Italy's public broadcaster introduced color television nationally. Although its legal and technical position was linked to Monaco, the service used repeaters and distribution arrangements to reach viewers across much of the Italian peninsula. During the 1970s, Telemontecarlo combined entertainment, sport and journalism. Its early contributors included sports journalist Gianni Brera and broadcaster Mike Bongiorno. In 1976, journalist Indro Montanelli helped create Il Giornale Nuovo, a short news and editorial program produced in association with the Milan newspaper of the same name. Other early formats included news bulletins, cooking programs, variety shows and local productions made in Milan. The network expanded its Italian reach during the 1970s, although its competitive position became more difficult as private Italian broadcasters grew. RAI acquired half of Telemontecarlo in 1982, partly because of concern about control of the satellite capacity used by the network. The arrangement generated editorial and operational tensions, including the departure of the Il Giornale team and the cancellation of associated news programming. In 1985, Organizações Globo acquired 90 percent of the network, with RAI retaining the balance. Globo introduced Brazilian programming, including Italian-language versions of telenovelas and series, and opened a new production center in Rome. The channel also carried Brazilian sports and events, while maintaining Italian entertainment and journalism. The late 1980s brought regulatory disputes and increasing competitive pressure. A legal challenge associated with the Fininvest group led to restrictions on Telemontecarlo's live broadcasts in Rome and Lazio in 1987. In 1990, amid weak audiences and debts, Globo began withdrawing from the network and transferred a large share to Montedison. During the 1990s, Telemontecarlo attempted to rebuild its profile by hiring established presenters, developing talk shows and expanding sports coverage. It broadcast football, Formula 1, alpine skiing, yacht racing and selected international competitions. The network also launched the TMCVideo teletext service in 1992. Despite these efforts, Telemontecarlo remained under pressure from RAI, Mediaset and other broadcasters. In 2001, the service was rebranded La7, marking a new phase as an Italian national television brand. La7 gradually developed a clearer editorial identity around political debate, current affairs, news and investigative reporting while retaining general entertainment programming. In 2013, Cairo Communication acquired La7 from Telecom Italia Media. The channel subsequently operated within the Cairo Communication group, with advertising sales handled by Cairo Pubblicità. Today, La7 is distributed nationally through Italian digital terrestrial television and through satellite platforms such as Sky Italia and Tivùsat. It is also available in Switzerland through cable distribution. The group has an additional channel called La7 Cinema. La7's contemporary value lies less in mass-market scale than in its recognizable news and public-affairs proposition, supported by television broadcasting, online distribution and a schedule built around political and social analysis.
