Overview
KLA Corporation is a United States-based semiconductor equipment and process-control company headquartered in Milpitas, California. Its systems, software and services help manufacturers detect defects, measure critical dimensions, analyze process variation and improve production yield across the semiconductor and broader electronics industries. KLA operates primarily as an enabling technology supplier: it does not manufacture finished chips, but provides the measurement, inspection, analytics and specialty process tools that allow chipmakers and electronics manufacturers to develop and produce devices more efficiently and reliably. The company traces its origins to KLA Instruments, founded in 1975 by Ken Levy and Bob Anderson to develop photomask inspection technology, and Tencor Instruments, founded in 1976 by Karel Urbanek and John Schwabacher to measure semiconductor film thickness and related wafer characteristics. KLA Instruments expanded from photomask inspection into wafer inspection, metrology and defect analysis. Tencor developed thin-film measurement technologies and later laser-scanning systems for identifying particles and contamination. The two businesses merged in April 1997, creating KLA-Tencor Corporation and combining complementary inspection, metrology, software and yield-management capabilities. KLA's central business is Semiconductor Process Control. This portfolio includes patterned and unpatterned wafer inspection, reticle and photomask inspection, critical-dimension and overlay metrology, film and materials measurement, defect review, classification, data management and process-control software. These systems are used from research and development through high-volume manufacturing. The company supports advanced logic, DRAM, 3D NAND, legacy-node semiconductors, power devices, compound semiconductors, MEMS, LEDs, data-storage products and other specialized devices. Its tools are intended to identify process excursions early, correlate defects with manufacturing conditions and help customers stabilize production at increasingly small geometries. KLA broadened its scope through a long series of acquisitions. Earlier transactions added capabilities in electron-beam inspection, interferometric wafer measurement, lithography modeling, advanced process control, surface inspection, wafer metrology, temperature monitoring, optical profiling and computational lithography. The 2019 acquisition of Orbotech was particularly important because it added inspection, testing, direct imaging and process-enabling technologies for printed circuit boards, flat-panel displays, advanced packaging and related electronic components. Orbotech also brought SPTS Technologies, whose specialty semiconductor process equipment includes etch, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition and molecular vapor deposition systems for markets such as MEMS, power devices, compound semiconductors, LEDs and advanced packaging. In 2019, KLA-Tencor changed its corporate name to KLA Corporation. The shorter name was intended to present a unified identity across the traditional KLA semiconductor process-control business and the acquired Orbotech and SPTS operations. KLA continues to organize its business around semiconductor process control, specialty semiconductor process equipment, and PCB and component inspection. Its service organization supports the installed base with maintenance, upgrades, applications assistance, spare parts and other lifecycle services. Service revenue is strategically important because it creates recurring relationships with customers and extends the productive life of installed systems. KLA's competitive positioning rests on technical precision, defect sensitivity, process knowledge, software and analytics, applications expertise and a large global installed base. Its products are deeply integrated into customers' manufacturing workflows, making process data and tool performance important to yield improvement…
History
KLA's history begins in Silicon Valley during the emergence of commercial semiconductor manufacturing. KLA Instruments was founded in 1975 by Ken Levy and Bob Anderson. Its early focus was photomask inspection: photomasks are patterned plates used to transfer circuit designs onto semiconductor wafers, and defects in those masks can be reproduced across many chips. Automated inspection therefore offered chipmakers a way to identify yield-threatening defects before they propagated through production. Tencor Instruments began operations in 1976. Founded by Karel Urbanek and John Schwabacher, Tencor initially concentrated on precise measurement of thin semiconductor films. Film thickness and uniformity are important because modern chips are built from many carefully controlled layers. Tencor subsequently expanded into laser-scanning inspection, particle and contamination detection, defect review and data-analysis equipment. The complementary capabilities of KLA and Tencor reflected a wider shift in semiconductor manufacturing: inspection was increasingly being combined with quantitative metrology and software-based process analysis. KLA broadened its product range during the 1980s and 1990s. KLA developed wafer-inspection systems and related analysis tools, while Tencor added technologies for measuring films, wafer shape, surface characteristics and production defects. In 1984, KLA introduced an automated patterned-wafer inspection system associated with the KLA 2020 product lineage, helping establish automated optical inspection as a central part of chip-production process control. Both companies also pursued electron-beam, optical, interferometric and computational methods as semiconductor geometries became smaller and manufacturing processes more complex. In April 1997, KLA Instruments and Tencor Instruments merged to form KLA-Tencor Corporation. The combination created a broader supplier of inspection, metrology, diagnostics and yield-management systems. Rather than offering a single manufacturing step, the merged company could address several stages of wafer, reticle and integrated-circuit production and could connect measurements with software and engineering services. The companies' combined annual revenue at the time of the merger exceeded one billion dollars according to historical accounts. The late 1990s and 2000s were marked by acquisitions that filled technology gaps and expanded KLA-Tencor's geographic and application reach. In 1998, the company acquired Nanopro GmbH for interferometric wafer-shape and thickness measurement technology; Amray for scanning electron microscope systems; VARS for image archiving and retrieval; the Quantox oxide-monitoring product line from Keithley Instruments; and Ultrapointe from Uniphase. In 1999, it acquired ACME Systems, a Taiwan-based yield-analysis software company. In 2000, Finle Technologies added lithography modeling and analysis software, while Fab Solutions contributed advanced process-control software. Phase Metrics followed in 2001, strengthening yield management and process control. KLA-Tencor continued to expand its inspection and metrology portfolio through acquisitions including Candela Instruments and Inspex's wafer-inspection business in 2004, ADE Corporation in 2006, and OnWafer Technologies, SensArray and Therma-Wave in 2007. These transactions added surface inspection, silicon-wafer metrology, lithography and plasma-etch products, temperature monitoring and other process-control capabilities. In 2008, ICOS Vision Systems and the microelectronic inspection equipment business of Vistec Semiconductor Systems broadened the company's inspection and testing activities. Ambios Technology was acquired in 2010, followed by Luminescent Technologies in 2014 for computational lithography and inspection capabilities, and Zeta Technologies in 2017 for optical profiling and inspection. The company also extended its materials and nanoscale measurement portfolio. In 2018, KLA-Tencor acquired the Nano Indenter product line from Keysight Technologies, as well as Nanomechanics and MicroVision. These businesses complemented KLA's broader interest in materials characterization, surface measurement and process analysis. The most transformative expansion came through the acquisition of Orbotech. Announced in 2018 and completed on February 20, 2019, the transaction brought KLA into a wider set of electronics-manufacturing markets. Orbotech supplied inspection, testing, direct imaging and process-enabling systems for printed circuit boards, flat-panel displays, advanced packaging and semiconductor production. Orbotech also owned SPTS Technologies, a specialist in etch, PVD, CVD and MVD equipment for MEMS, LEDs, power devices, compound semiconductors, high-speed radio-frequency devices and advanced packaging. The combination gave KLA a stronger position beyond traditional front-end wafer process control. In 2019, KLA-Tencor announced that it would change its name to KLA Corporation. The change became effective in July and reflected the company's effort to present its expanded portfolio under one shorter corporate identity. In the same year, KLA acquired Qoniac GmbH, a German software company specializing in semiconductor process-control software. KLA later continued developing products for automotive semiconductors and other markets where defect detection, outgoing quality and reliability are particularly important. KLA's modern business is organized into three reportable segments: Semiconductor Process Control; Specialty Semiconductor Process; and PCB and Component Inspection. Semiconductor Process Control includes inspection, metrology, analytics, software and services for wafers, reticles, integrated circuits and related materials. Specialty Semiconductor Process includes SPTS equipment for deposition and etch applications. PCB and Component Inspection encompasses systems used in printed-circuit-board, display, packaging, MEMS and other component manufacturing. The company maintains a large global service and applications organization. Its services include field support, preventive maintenance, upgrades, spare parts, training and process-development assistance. This installed-base model connects KLA to customers over the full life of a tool and helps manufacturers use process data to improve yield, reduce waste and accelerate technology ramps. As of 2026, KLA remained headquartered in Milpitas, operated internationally and continued to invest in process-control technologies associated with advanced logic, memory, high-bandwidth memory, extreme ultraviolet lithography, advanced packaging, automotive electronics and AI-related semiconductor demand.
