Overview

JD.com, Inc., also known as Jingdong Group, is a Chinese multinational technology and commerce company headquartered in Beijing. It is best known for its self-operated online retail business, which sells electronics, household appliances, groceries, apparel, luxury goods, automotive products and everyday consumer merchandise. Unlike a pure marketplace model, JD has historically emphasized direct procurement, inventory ownership, product authenticity, quality control and an integrated delivery network. Its principal domestic rival in business-to-consumer e-commerce is Alibaba’s Tmall, while the company also competes with other Chinese platforms across retail, local services and consumer technology. Liu Qiangdong founded the business in 1998. The original operation sold magneto-optical products, then broadened into computers, mobile phones and other electronics as Chinese internet commerce developed. JD’s retail website went online in 2004, initially under the jdlaser.com domain. The company adopted 360buy.com in 2007 and later used the Jingdong Mall name before changing its principal domain and public identity to JD.com in 2013. The company’s early growth was supported by a positioning around genuine goods, reliable fulfillment and customer service, in contrast to concerns about counterfeit products and inconsistent delivery that affected parts of the wider online retail market. A defining strategic decision was the creation of an in-house logistics function in 2007. JD subsequently built warehouses, distribution facilities, delivery operations and customer-service infrastructure rather than relying exclusively on external couriers. This network became the foundation for fast delivery and later developed into JD Logistics, a separate supply-chain services business serving both JD and outside customers. The group has also experimented with automation, drones, autonomous vehicles and digitally managed warehouses. Its logistics capabilities support direct retail, marketplace merchants, cross-border trade and enterprise supply-chain solutions. JD expanded beyond its original electronics focus into books, digital content, groceries, fresh food, clothing, luxury, healthcare, financial technology, cloud computing, industrial supplies, property services and international retail. Important branded or affiliated businesses include JD Retail, JD Worldwide, JD Logistics, JD Health, JD Technology, 7Fresh, JINGDONG Industrials and JINGDONG Property. Ochama, launched in the Netherlands in 2022, extended the group’s omnichannel model into Europe through online ordering, pickup points and home delivery. The company has also used alliances and investments to broaden its ecosystem, including cooperation with Tencent, Walmart, Shopify, Geopost and Evri. JD became a publicly traded company through a 2014 Nasdaq initial public offering. It later completed a secondary listing in Hong Kong in 2020. Several important businesses have been separately financed or listed, including JD Health and JD Logistics. The group continues to combine retail scale with technology investment, including artificial-intelligence tools such as the ChatRhino large language model, which is designed for applications in retail, logistics, finance, healthcare and other sectors. The company’s recent direction has included rapid delivery, cross-border commerce, fashion and luxury expansion, sustainability programs and overseas growth. Its Green Stream Initiative and Green Impact Initiative address packaging, logistics emissions and environmentally oriented purchasing. JD remains primarily identified with the Chinese market, but its logistics infrastructure, international marketplace operations and European retail brands provide a broader operating footprint. Its competitive identity rests on supply-chain control, delivery reliability, product authenticity, technology-enabled retail and an increasingly diversified business portfolio.

History

JD.com began in 1998 when Liu Qiangdong established a retail business in China. The original company was associated with the name Jingdong and initially specialized in magneto-optical products. As internet access and online shopping expanded, it moved into computers, mobile phones and other consumer electronics. Its business-to-consumer website went online in 2004 under the jdlaser.com domain. The company adopted 360buy.com in 2007 and used Jingdong Mall as its retail identity before consolidating its public branding under JD.com in 2013. The development of an owned logistics network was central to JD’s evolution. In 2007, the company established an internal logistics department to improve delivery reliability and control the customer experience. It later built warehouses, distribution centers, delivery teams and customer-service operations across China. This infrastructure allowed JD to offer rapid fulfillment while maintaining closer control over inventory and product handling. The logistics organization eventually became JD Logistics, which expanded from serving JD’s own retail operation to providing supply-chain technology, warehousing, transportation and delivery services to external clients. JD diversified its merchandise and operating model throughout the 2010s. Electronics remained an important category, but the company added appliances, books, apparel, groceries, fresh food, household goods, automobiles and luxury products. It also developed marketplace and cross-border businesses, including JD Worldwide, enabling international merchants to reach Chinese customers. The group experimented with digital books from 2012 onward and developed physical and omnichannel grocery formats such as 7Fresh. The company’s public-market expansion began with its Nasdaq IPO in 2014, which raised about US$1.8 billion. That year Tencent acquired a stake in JD and transferred certain e-commerce assets as part of a broader effort to strengthen JD’s position against Alibaba. JD and Tencent later created the Jingteng Plan, using the companies’ complementary consumer and social data capabilities to support merchants. Walmart also became a strategic investor after transferring its Chinese e-commerce business Yihaodian to JD in 2016. Although Walmart later sold its JD stake, the companies continued to describe their commercial relationship as ongoing. JD established or expanded several specialized businesses. JD Health was organized as an independently operated subsidiary in 2019 and later completed a Hong Kong IPO. JD Logistics was separately listed in Hong Kong in 2021. JD Technology has covered financial technology and cloud-related activities, while JD developed industrial supply-chain and property-management operations. The company also invested in automation, drone delivery, autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence. In 2023 it introduced ChatRhino, an industry-focused large language model intended for applications across retail, logistics, finance, healthcare and urban services. JD’s international strategy has included partnerships, cross-border marketplaces and branded retail operations. Ochama launched in the Netherlands in 2022 with automated fulfillment, pickup points and home delivery, later serving multiple European countries. JD also partnered with Shopify to bring participating brands to Chinese consumers and worked with European logistics providers on China-Europe shipping. In China, the company continued to develop rapid local delivery, including JD NOW, which connects consumers with inventory from nearby stores. Sustainability and labor-support programs have become additional elements of the corporate narrative. JD Logistics’ Green Stream Initiative targets packaging and supply-chain waste, while the Green Impact Initiative labels environmentally oriented products and rewards customer participation. The group has also described employee housing, social insurance and education support programs. JD.com today remains a large Chinese integrated retailer and technology group, combining direct sales, marketplace services, logistics, healthcare, industrial services, international retail and digital infrastructure.
