In 1968, John and Gail Kautz began planting vineyards on their farm; in 1989 the Kautz family began construction on their winery in Murphys, California, and in 1990 the winery opened.
History
In 1968, John and Gail Kautz began planting vineyards on their farm. After selling their grapes to wineries throughout California, John and Gail, along with their children, began to dream of having their own winery. Instead of focusing on the popular properties in Napa or Sonoma, the Kautz family turned to the Sierra Foothills. In 1989 the Kautz family began construction on their winery in Murphys, California, on another parcel of land inherited through the lineage of Gail Kautz. In the middle of the property there was a large rock formation, which was to be turned into a cavern for barrel aging their wines. As miners blasted and carved away at this rock, they found it very hard and commented daily how the rock was "like iron." Originally to be called "Kautz Family Winery," the Kautz family changed the name of the business to "Ironstone Vineyards." In 1990 the Kautz family dreams were realized with the opening of the winery. Through the years each family member became part of the business; John Kautz assumed the role of Chairman of the family business, Gail Kautz is the Vice Chairman, and Stephen Kautz, the eldest son, became President of Ironstone Vineyards.
