Overview

iOS is Apple's proprietary mobile operating system and one of the central software products in the Apple ecosystem. It was introduced in 2007 with the original iPhone under the name iPhone OS, later becoming known as iOS. The platform was created to provide a tightly integrated software environment for Apple's multitouch smartphones, combining the operating system, system applications, security architecture, developer tools, and distribution mechanisms required to operate the iPhone. The first version of iPhone OS was deliberately focused on core mobile functions, including telephony, visual voicemail, web browsing, email, maps, music playback, photography, and a touch-oriented user interface. Unlike desktop operating systems, it was designed around direct manipulation through gestures such as tapping, swiping, scrolling, and pinching. This interface model, together with Apple's control over the iPhone's hardware and software, became a defining characteristic of the platform. A major turning point came in 2008, when Apple introduced the App Store and opened iPhone OS to third-party applications. The App Store transformed iOS from a built-in phone operating system into a broad software platform serving communication, entertainment, productivity, finance, education, health, gaming, and commerce. Apple's software development kit and review process established a managed distribution model in which applications were submitted, evaluated, signed, and delivered through Apple's store infrastructure. This model helped Apple maintain a consistent security and user-experience standard, while also creating a large commercial market for developers. The operating system has expanded beyond basic smartphone functions through services and frameworks such as iCloud, Apple Pay, Siri, Face ID integration, HealthKit, HomeKit, CarPlay, Apple Music, Apple Maps, Apple Arcade, and continuity features linking iPhone with Mac, Apple Watch, iPad, and other Apple products. The platform also supports sophisticated media, graphics, machine-learning, accessibility, privacy, and security capabilities. Its software architecture is closely optimized for Apple's own processors and device designs, allowing Apple to coordinate system updates with specific hardware generations. Privacy and security are prominent elements of iOS's market positioning. Apple uses application sandboxing, code signing, permission controls, encrypted communications, hardware-backed security features, and a controlled application distribution process. Features such as App Tracking Transparency have also made iOS a significant force in debates over mobile advertising, user consent, and platform governance. These policies have strengthened Apple's privacy-oriented brand message but have also produced disputes with advertisers, developers, and regulators. iOS is distributed primarily through iPhone devices and is updated regularly with major annual releases and interim security and maintenance updates. Although iPad software developed from the iPhone platform, Apple separated it into iPadOS as a distinct product line in 2019. The original iPod touch also used iOS until that product line was discontinued. Apple continues to evolve iOS as a premium, tightly integrated operating system intended to reinforce the value of iPhone hardware, the App Store, and the broader Apple ecosystem. The current official Apple materials identify iOS 27 as a release featuring new Siri and Apple Intelligence capabilities, although release-specific details may change during the software lifecycle.

History

Apple introduced iPhone OS in January 2007 alongside the first iPhone. The system represented a departure from conventional physical-key mobile phones: its principal interaction model was a capacitive multitouch screen supported by gestures, while its software and hardware were developed as a single product experience. The initial operating system included Apple's own applications and services for calling, messaging, email, web browsing, music, photos, maps, and video. At launch, Apple emphasized a controlled software environment rather than an open third-party application marketplace. The platform's most important early expansion occurred in 2008 with the release of the iPhone software development kit and the App Store. Developers could create native applications using Apple's tools, while customers could browse, purchase, download, and update software through Apple's centralized distribution system. This changed the commercial role of the iPhone and gave iPhone OS a platform economy extending well beyond Apple's own applications. Apple subsequently renamed the operating system iOS, aligning it more closely with the naming of other Apple software platforms. During the 2010s, iOS developed into the foundation of a broad mobile ecosystem. New releases added multitasking, folders, notifications, iMessage, Siri, iCloud, Apple Maps, biometric authentication, Apple Pay, Apple Music, health and home automation frameworks, improved camera and graphics capabilities, and stronger privacy and security controls. Apple also used annual version releases to coordinate operating-system features with new generations of iPhone hardware. The platform's integration with Apple's custom chips, biometric hardware, cameras, sensors, and secure elements became an important source of differentiation from more heterogeneous mobile operating systems. Apple's adjacent acquisitions and technology investments also influenced the capabilities available through iOS. The acquisition of FingerWorks supplied multitouch expertise that contributed to Apple's gesture-based interfaces. Siri's technology was incorporated into Apple's voice assistant following Apple's acquisition of Siri Inc. Workflow was later integrated into Apple's software as Shortcuts, extending automation capabilities on iPhone and other Apple platforms. These examples illustrate Apple's broader practice of acquiring technology and teams that can be absorbed into its hardware, software, and services ecosystem. As iPhone use expanded, Apple increasingly positioned iOS around privacy, security, accessibility, and continuity. Application sandboxing and code signing limit the ability of software to interfere with other applications or the operating system. Permission prompts give users more control over access to location, contacts, photos, microphones, cameras, and other sensitive resources. Apple also introduced App Tracking Transparency, requiring applications to request permission for certain forms of cross-app and cross-website tracking. The policy became a major industry issue because it affected mobile advertising measurement and targeting. The original iPad used a version of iOS, but Apple created iPadOS as a separate operating-system brand in 2019 to support tablet-oriented features. iOS remains the primary operating system for the iPhone, while parts of its frameworks and design language continue to be shared across Apple's operating-system family. The platform also supports interoperability with Apple Watch, Mac, AirPods, Apple TV, vehicles using CarPlay, and connected-home products. In the 2020s, Apple has increasingly incorporated machine learning and Apple Intelligence into iOS while maintaining its emphasis on on-device processing, privacy controls, and integration with Apple's custom silicon. The current official Apple materials identify iOS 27 as a release with an updated Siri powered by Apple Intelligence and additional system features. iOS therefore functions not only as smartphone system software but also as a strategic platform linking iPhone hardware, the App Store, Apple services, developers, and the wider Apple product family.
