Overview
InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort is a luxury resort and spa in Da Nang, Vietnam, situated on the forested Son Tra Peninsula, also known as Monkey Mountain. Managed under the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts brand of InterContinental Hotels Group, the property combines a secluded coastal setting with a highly theatrical architectural concept developed by architect and landscape designer Bill Bensley. Its design draws on traditional Vietnamese visual and cultural references while incorporating contemporary luxury, dramatic vertical circulation, and extensive views over the sea. The resort officially opened on June 1, 2012, following more than six years of construction. It occupies approximately 39 hectares of the peninsula and includes about 700 metres of private beach. The steep terrain is organized into several levels, connected in part by a cable car known as Nam Tram. This unusual layout gives the property a distinct sense of vertical separation between its accommodation, leisure, dining, and arrival areas. Accommodation comprises approximately 200 rooms and suites. The resort's facilities include two outdoor swimming pools, a fitness centre, children's and games facilities, a library, daily activities, and the HARNN Asian Heritage Spa. Its dining portfolio has included Citron, which serves Vietnamese and Western cuisine in elevated private dining booths; Tingara Modern Japanese, associated with omakase chef Junichi Yoshida; La Maison 1888, a French restaurant associated with chef Christian Le Squer; Barefoot, a beachfront venue focused on seafood and grilled meats; Buffalo Bar; and Long Bar, a beachside lounge. The property has been positioned as a destination resort rather than simply an accommodation outlet. Its secluded beach, architecture, spa, restaurants, and event facilities are marketed together as an integrated luxury experience. The resort has received international travel-industry attention, including recognition in Condé Nast Traveler's new-hotel and destination coverage, Fodor's hotel awards, TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice lists, and other luxury-travel publications. Condé Nast Traveler described it as a flagship InterContinental property in Vietnam. In November 2017, the resort hosted the Economic Leaders' Meeting of APEC Vietnam 2017. The event brought 24 world leaders to the property, including United States President Donald Trump, Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This high-profile gathering substantially increased the resort's visibility as an international hospitality and diplomatic venue. Its combination of a protected coastal setting, distinctive architecture, branded service, and globally recognized culinary and spa facilities has made it one of the most prominent luxury resorts in Vietnam.
History
InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort was developed as a major luxury hospitality project on Da Nang's Son Tra Peninsula, a coastal and forested area also known as Monkey Mountain. The resort's development and construction lasted more than six years before its formal opening on June 1, 2012. Its location was selected for its combination of seclusion, steep coastal terrain, views of the South China Sea, and proximity to Da Nang. The property is approximately a 30-minute drive from Da Nang International Airport and the city centre, while the historic town of Hoi An is described as roughly 45 minutes away. Architect and landscape designer Bill Bensley created the resort's design. Rather than using a conventional low-rise beach-resort arrangement, the project responds to the peninsula's topography through a series of vertically organized levels. The visual language references traditional Vietnamese architecture and culture but interprets those references through contemporary luxury materials, bold decorative details, and theatrical public spaces. A cable car called Nam Tram was built to move guests between the different levels, helping the resort operate across its unusually steep site. The completed property covers approximately 39 hectares and includes around 700 metres of private beach. Its accommodation inventory consists of about 200 rooms and suites. Leisure and guest facilities include two outdoor pools, a fitness centre, a children's playroom, a games centre, a library, organized daily activities, and the HARNN Asian Heritage Spa. These facilities support the resort's positioning as a self-contained destination where accommodation, wellness, recreation, and dining are central to the guest experience. Food and beverage became an important part of the resort's identity. Citron offers Vietnamese and Western dishes in distinctive elevated dining booths. Tingara Modern Japanese focuses on Japanese cuisine and omakase, with chef Junichi Yoshida associated with the restaurant. La Maison 1888 presents French cuisine and has been associated with three-Michelin-star chef Christian Le Squer; the restaurant is described in the reference material as a one-star Michelin restaurant. Barefoot serves seafood and grilled meats in a beachfront setting, while Buffalo Bar and Long Bar provide separate bar and lounge experiences. The resort gained recognition soon after opening. It appeared in early luxury-travel selections including Destin Asian's Luxe List, Fodor's 100 Hotels, Condé Nast Traveler's 2013 Hot List, and TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice rankings for hotels and luxury hotels in Vietnam. Condé Nast Traveler also characterized the property as a flagship Vietnam property for InterContinental and highlighted its unusual design and setting. Its most prominent public role came during APEC Vietnam 2017. The resort hosted the Economic Leaders' Meeting, bringing 24 world leaders to Son Tra Peninsula. The attendance included United States President Donald Trump, Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Hosting the meeting demonstrated the property's ability to accommodate high-security international events while reinforcing its status as a globally visible luxury resort. The resort remains an InterContinental Hotels & Resorts property managed under InterContinental Hotels Group, with its brand identity built around secluded coastal luxury, Vietnamese-inspired design, high-end restaurants, and spa-led destination travel.
