Overview
Indiabulls is an Indian diversified business group whose activities have historically centered on financial services and real estate. The group originated in 2000 when Sameer Gehlaut, Rajiv Rattan and Saurabh Mittal, three graduates of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, co-founded Indiabulls Financial Services as a stockbroking business. It subsequently expanded through subsidiaries and related companies into consumer finance, housing finance, securities broking, real-estate development, infrastructure, power and other financial activities. The group became publicly listed in 2004 through the initial public offering of Indiabulls Financial Services. During the following years, its structure was reorganized several times. Indiabulls Real Estate was demerged in 2006, followed by Indiabulls Securities in 2008. In 2013, Indiabulls Financial Services reverse-merged with its wholly owned housing-finance subsidiary, creating a group flagship centered on Indiabulls Housing Finance. In 2014, the founders divided control of different parts of the group: Sameer Gehlaut retained the businesses associated with housing finance, real estate, securities and wholesale services, while Rajiv Rattan and Saurabh Mittal took control of the power and infrastructure businesses, which were later renamed under the RattanIndia brand. Indiabulls Housing Finance became one of India's largest housing-finance companies and entered the NIFTY 50 benchmark by 2017. The group's fortunes weakened during the Indian credit-market stress that followed the 2018 collapse of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services. Falling share and bond values, concerns about the company's balance-sheet contraction, allegations involving group promoters and the proposed but unsuccessful merger with Lakshmi Vilas Bank placed significant pressure on the Indiabulls financial-services businesses. Sameer Gehlaut stepped down as chairman of Indiabulls Housing Finance in 2020 and ceased to be its promoter in 2023. The group's later evolution involved further disposals, renamings and consolidation. Indiabulls Real Estate pursued a proposed combination with entities associated with Embassy Group and was renamed Equinox India Developments in 2024. Indiabulls Housing Finance was also renamed Sammaan Capital in July 2024. In the corporate structure described by the Indiabulls article, a new Indiabulls Limited was formed in 2025 through a National Company Law Tribunal-approved scheme that merged 17 entities into formerly listed Yaari Digital Integrated Services Limited; that company was then renamed Indiabulls Limited. The current Indiabulls structure described in the reference material includes real-estate development, securities broking, asset reconstruction, digital payments, non-banking finance, small-business lending exposure and construction-equipment leasing. Its real-estate activity covers residential and commercial development in Mumbai, the National Capital Region and Ludhiana. Financial-services businesses include equity, commodity and currency broking, depository services, acquisition and collection of stressed assets, digital wallet and planned UPI services, and digital personal and small-business lending. The group therefore represents a corporate platform assembled from businesses that have repeatedly been separated, renamed, merged or transferred rather than a single continuously operated consumer brand.
History
Indiabulls began in 2000 as Indiabulls Financial Services, a stockbroking company established by Sameer Gehlaut, Rajiv Rattan and Saurabh Mittal, all graduates of IIT Delhi. The founders used the brokerage business as the base for a broader group that entered consumer finance, housing finance, securities, real estate and related sectors. The company went public in 2004 through an initial public offering. Expansion was accompanied by repeated structural separations. Indiabulls Real Estate was demerged in 2006, and Indiabulls Securities followed in 2008. In 2013, Indiabulls Financial Services reverse-merged with its wholly owned housing-finance subsidiary. This produced a flagship company organized around housing finance and gave the group a stronger position in India's retail and mortgage-finance markets. In 2014, the three original promoters divided the group's businesses. Sameer Gehlaut retained management control over Indiabulls Housing Finance, Indiabulls Real Estate, Indiabulls Securities and Indiabulls Wholesale Services. Rajiv Rattan and Saurabh Mittal took control of Indiabulls Power and Indiabulls Infrastructure, later renamed RattanIndia Power and RattanIndia Infrastructure. The housing-finance business grew substantially and by 2017 was described as India's second-largest housing-finance company. Its inclusion in the NIFTY 50 reflected the scale reached by that business. The subsequent period was more difficult. The collapse of IL&FS in 2018 contributed to a wider Indian credit-market crisis, and Indiabulls shares and bonds experienced a significant decline. The group also faced allegations of fraud involving promoters, concern about a shrinking balance sheet and scrutiny surrounding a proposed merger with Lakshmi Vilas Bank. The bank transaction ultimately failed to close. Indiabulls then moved toward further portfolio changes. In 2020, it announced plans to exit Indiabulls Real Estate through a merger transaction involving Embassy Group entities. Sameer Gehlaut stepped down as chairman of Indiabulls Housing Finance in the same year and ceased to be its promoter in 2023. The former operating identities were progressively replaced: Indiabulls Housing Finance became Sammaan Capital in July 2024, while Indiabulls Real Estate became Equinox India Developments. The present Indiabulls Limited structure was created through a later consolidation. In 2025, a National Company Law Tribunal-approved scheme brought together 17 entities, including Dhani Services Limited and Indiabulls Enterprises Limited, within formerly listed Yaari Digital Integrated Services Limited. That entity was then renamed Indiabulls Limited. The businesses described as part of the resulting group include Dhani Services, Indiabulls Enterprises, Yaari Digital Integrated Services, Indiabulls Asset Reconstruction Company and TranServ. The group's post-reorganization activities span several categories. Its property division develops residential and commercial projects in Mumbai, the National Capital Region and Ludhiana. Its securities subsidiary provides equity, commodity and currency brokerage and depository-participant services. The asset-reconstruction operation purchases stressed portfolios from banks and non-bank finance companies and manages their collection. Digital activities include the Dhani Pay wallet and a transition toward third-party application provider-enabled UPI services, subject to regulatory certification. Dhani Loans and Services operates as a non-banking financial company offering personal loans, small-business loans and credit lines through digital channels. The group also has exposure to a United States small and medium-business lending platform and remains associated with construction-equipment leasing. Indiabulls' history is therefore marked by rapid diversification, public-market expansion, demergers, promoter realignment, credit-market stress, rebranding and corporate consolidation. The name has been used across several related but separately governed businesses, so the 2025 Indiabulls Limited entity should be distinguished from earlier companies that carried the Indiabulls name and were later renamed or separated.
