Overview
Hawker Siddeley was a major British manufacturing group whose most important historical identity was as an aircraft and aerospace producer. It emerged in 1935 when Hawker Aircraft acquired the businesses associated with J. D. Siddeley, including Armstrong Siddeley and Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft, while also bringing Avro, Gloster and Air Training Services into the wider group. The constituent companies initially retained their own names and design traditions, allowing Hawker, Avro, Gloster, de Havilland, Blackburn and other legacies to coexist within one corporate structure. The group became one of Britain's most important aviation manufacturers during the Second World War. Its industrial system produced the Hawker Hurricane, a principal British fighter during the Battle of Britain, as well as aircraft associated with Avro, Gloster and other group companies. After the war, Hawker Siddeley expanded beyond aircraft into guided weapons, space technology, aero engines, railway engineering, electrical equipment, industrial electronics and heavy machinery. In 1948 the corporate name became Hawker Siddeley Group, with Hawker Siddeley Aviation responsible for aircraft and Hawker Siddeley Dynamics responsible for guided weapons and space-related work. The company grew through further acquisitions and government-directed consolidation. Folland was acquired in 1959, followed by de Havilland Aircraft Company and Blackburn Aircraft in 1960. From 1963, the individual constituent-company names were increasingly replaced by Hawker Siddeley or HS branding. Products from this period included the HS.121 Trident, HS.125 business jet, HS 748 turboprop, HS 780 Andover, Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft and Hawk trainer. Its best-known achievement was the Harrier family, developed from the P.1127 and Kestrel programmes. The Harrier became the first operational and commercially successful vertical or short-takeoff-and-landing jet fighter, serving with the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and foreign operators. Hawker Siddeley also designed and manufactured major aircraft structures, including wings for the Airbus A300. Aerospace was only part of the group. Its ownership of the Brush companies gave it locomotive and electrical-machine operations, while related acquisitions brought railway braking, signalling and diesel-engine capabilities. Hawker Siddeley Canada produced aircraft, engines and railway equipment, including subway and rapid-transit vehicles for systems in Toronto, Boston and the New York metropolitan area. The group also operated in industrial electronics, instrumentation, power equipment, heavy logging machinery and nuclear research. A small JASON reactor operated by the Hawker Siddeley Nuclear Power Company ran at Langley from 1959 to 1962. In 1977, the Aircraft and Shipbuilding Industries Act transferred Hawker Siddeley Aviation and Hawker Siddeley Dynamics into the newly created, nationalised British Aerospace alongside the British Aircraft Corporation and Scottish Aviation. These aviation operations represented only a minority of the wider group by that stage. The remaining businesses were retained under Hawker Siddeley Group plc, which subsequently concentrated on railway engineering, signalling, industrial electronics, instrumentation and related technologies. During the late 1980s and early 1990s it sold or reorganised several overseas heavy-manufacturing activities. BTR plc acquired the remaining group in 1992 for a reported £1.5 billion, ending Hawker Siddeley's existence as an independent corporate group. Some successor businesses and licensed or revived uses of the name continued afterward, but the original group was defunct.
History
Hawker Siddeley began in 1935 as an acquisition-based federation assembled around Hawker Aircraft. The new group incorporated Armstrong Siddeley, Armstrong Whitworth Aircraft, Avro, Gloster and related service companies. Rather than immediately erase the identities of its constituent manufacturers, it allowed them to continue developing and building aircraft under established names. This structure gave the group access to several design offices, factories and engineering traditions. During the Second World War, the group became central to British aircraft production. The Hawker Hurricane was among the principal fighters defending Britain, while Avro, Gloster and other associated organisations supplied additional combat aircraft and engines. The group's wartime importance established a foundation for its postwar expansion and government influence. In 1945, Hawker Siddeley acquired Victory Aircraft in Canada and renamed it A. V. Roe Canada, commonly called Avro Canada. The subsidiary developed the C-102 Jetliner, CF-100 Canuck, CF-105 Arrow and Avrocar, although only the CF-100 entered large-scale production. Avro Canada expanded into engines, steel, mining, electronics, computers and railway equipment, becoming a substantial Canadian industrial concern. Cancellation of the Arrow programme contributed to the subsidiary's decline; it was dissolved in 1962, with remaining assets transferred to Hawker Siddeley Canada. The parent adopted the name Hawker Siddeley Group in 1948. Its aircraft activities were organised as Hawker Siddeley Aviation, while guided weapons and space work operated through Hawker Siddeley Dynamics. The company continued consolidation in response to British government pressure to reduce the number of competing aerospace manufacturers. It acquired Folland in 1959 and de Havilland and Blackburn in 1960. From 1963, aircraft were increasingly presented under the HS or Hawker Siddeley name rather than their former subsidiary brands. The postwar portfolio included airliners, business aircraft, military aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft, trainers and transport types. The HS 748 evolved from the Avro 748, the HS.125 from the de Havilland DH.125 and the HS.121 Trident from the de Havilland DH.121. Hawker Siddeley also built later examples of aircraft originally developed by Hawker, Avro, Blackburn, Gloster and de Havilland. Its P.1127 and Kestrel work led to the Harrier, whose vectored-thrust system enabled short or vertical takeoff and landing. The company also participated in European aerospace manufacturing by designing and producing wings for the Airbus A300. Missile and space work included Blue Steel, Blue Streak, Sea Slug, Sea Dart, Firestreak, Red Top, Martel and Europa rocket components. The group also investigated advanced aircraft and space concepts, including the P.1154, HS.141 and Helicrane projects. A company subsidiary operated the 10-kilowatt JASON reactor at Langley between 1959 and 1962. Diversification accelerated in the 1950s and 1960s. The 1957 purchase of the Brush group brought Brush Electrical Machines and Brush Traction into the organisation, together with locomotive production. Other industrial holdings included railway braking and signalling, diesel engines, instrumentation and industrial electronics. Hawker Siddeley Canada built rolling stock and rapid-transit vehicles for North American operators, including the Port Authority Trans-Hudson system, Boston's MBTA and Toronto's subway network. The British government's 1977 nationalisation of aircraft and shipbuilding industries removed Hawker Siddeley's main aviation and guided-weapons divisions from private ownership. They joined British Aircraft Corporation and Scottish Aviation to form British Aerospace. The broader Hawker Siddeley Group survived because non-aviation and foreign operations were retained. During the 1980s it rationalised around railway engineering, signalling, industrial electronics, instrumentation and power-related businesses. It sold or separated several North American operations, including heavy equipment and Canadian rail manufacturing interests. BTR plc acquired the remaining group in 1992. Subsequent corporate reorganisations placed various successor businesses in other industrial groups, but Hawker Siddeley ceased to operate as the original independent enterprise.
