French mutual insurance and financial-services group with roots in agricultural insurance.
Last updated August 27, 2026
Overview
Groupama is a French mutual insurance group headquartered in Paris and active in insurance, assistance, savings, retirement, banking-related services, legal services and other customer-support activities. The name is derived from Groupe des Assurances Mutuelles Agricoles, reflecting the organisation's origins in farmer-led mutual insurance funds. Although the commercial Groupama brand was created in 1986, its institutional history reaches back to the nineteenth century, when agricultural communities established local funds to protect farms, livestock, property and livelihoods against risks that commercial insurers often served poorly or priced beyond the reach of small producers. The Groupama model combines a central national mutual reinsurance body, regional mutuals and specialist mutuals. In France, the Groupama brand is distributed through a network of local and regional structures, allowing the group to combine national-scale underwriting and investment capabilities with local member relationships. This structure is central to the company's positioning: Groupama presents itself as a practical, community-oriented insurer that supports individuals, farmers, professionals, small and medium-sized businesses, local authorities and larger organisations. Its main insurance activities cover property and casualty, motor, home, agricultural, business, liability and legal-protection risks, together with life insurance, health, protection, savings and retirement products. The group also operates through specialist and subsidiary brands. Gan is its principal complementary insurance brand in France, particularly associated with entrepreneurs, professionals, small businesses and broker or agent distribution. International subsidiaries adapt Groupama's insurance propositions to local markets, with operations concentrated in Europe and additional activities in China and Tunisia. The international portfolio includes property and casualty insurance, personal insurance and related services. Groupama's official international profile identifies operations in nine countries outside France: Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovenia and Tunisia. Groupama's major expansion phase began in the 1980s and 1990s. The creation of the Groupama name unified several agricultural insurance and protection entities. The acquisition of Gan in 1998 substantially expanded the group's scale, product range and distribution reach, making Groupama one of France's largest general insurers. The group subsequently developed financial and banking activities, including Groupama Banque, while continuing to expand outside France. Its growth was interrupted by severe claims from the storms and floods of late 1999 and by wider financial pressures during the European sovereign-debt crisis. Groupama responded by selling reinsurance and other assets, restructuring its banking activities and implementing a financial recovery plan in 2011 and 2012. In June 2018, Groupama SA, previously the central corporate body, was transformed into Groupama Assurances Mutuelles, a national mutual reinsurance fund. The change reinforced the group's mutual identity and clarified the role of the national entity within the wider federation of mutuals. More recent portfolio moves include the acquisition of Juritravail, a provider of remote legal information and advice, in 2021, and the sale of Groupama's minority stake in Orange Bank to Orange later that year. The Groupama brand is also highly visible through sponsorship and public-facing campaigns. It has supported sailing, professional and amateur cycling, stadium naming partnerships and safety-prevention initiatives. Its professional cycling partnership with FDJ began in 2018, while later programmes have promoted everyday cycling, amateur clubs and road safety. In 2025, the brand introduced a refreshed visual and sonic identity centred on its long-running character Cerise and themes of proximity, usefulness and comm…
History
Groupama's history begins with the development of agricultural mutual insurance in nineteenth-century France. Farmers created local funds to address risks specific to rural life, including fire, livestock losses, hail, property damage and other threats to agricultural income. A cited founding event occurred on December 22, 1840, when farmers in Mions in the Rhône region established a local agricultural mutual fire insurer. The legal framework for agricultural mutual insurance funds was later formalised by French legislation enacted on July 4, 1900. Groupama's historical materials also identify the creation of central agricultural reinsurance arrangements, including fire reinsurance in 1906 and livestock reinsurance in 1908. The predecessor network broadened its remit during the twentieth century. Samda was established in 1963 to provide protection against non-agricultural property damage. In 1972, SORAVIE was created in partnership with Crédit Agricole to address life-insurance needs for agricultural organisations. Groupama also introduced SOS-AMA, a general assistance service, in 1975. These developments show the transition from a narrowly agricultural insurance system toward a broader protection platform serving households, professionals, organisations and local communities. The Groupama name was created in 1986, when AMA, Samda, SORAVIE and SOREMA were brought together under a common identity. The move responded to changing economic conditions, the internationalisation of financial markets and the need to coordinate a growing network of mutual insurance bodies. The Groupama brand therefore represented both continuity with agricultural mutualism and an ambition to operate as a modern, diversified insurer. Financial services became part of the group's development in the early 1990s. B.CERP bank was created in 1992 and subsequently took the name Groupama Financial Bank. Groupama expanded its banking activities further in the 2000s, while its insurance operations continued to develop through acquisitions and international expansion. In 1998, Groupama acquired Gan, then one of France's largest insurers and the country's fourth-largest insurer according to the referenced historical account. Gan brought complementary insurance businesses, distribution channels and customer segments, particularly in commercial, professional and personal insurance. The transaction made Groupama one of France's largest general insurers and established Gan as a major brand within the group. The acquisition was followed by a difficult period. Exceptional storms and floods in late 1999 generated large claims affecting the acquired Gan business and the wider group. Groupama subsequently sold two reinsurance entities while retaining its Lloyd's syndicate Broadgate. In May 2001, Sorema S.A. and Sorema North American Reinsurance Company were sold to SCOR. The transaction provided Groupama with €344 million and made Groupama SCOR's largest shareholder at the time, with a reported 17.4 percent stake. The sale reduced Groupama's direct reinsurance exposure while preserving a financial relationship with a major French reinsurer. During the 2000s, Groupama continued to develop a multi-line insurance and financial-services model. It expanded internationally through subsidiaries and acquisitions, and Groupama Banque became an important part of its financial-services offering. In 2009, Banque Finama was acquired and combined with Groupama Banque. At the time, Groupama was recognised in international mutual and cooperative rankings as one of the world's largest mutual insurers by turnover. The group encountered renewed financial pressure in 2011 and 2012. It sold several subsidiaries and assets as part of a restructuring programme. In October 2012, it announced that it would not pay interest on part of its debt by the contractual deadline, describing the step as part of a broader recovery plan. Jean-Yves Dagès became chairman of Groupama in 2012 and presided over a period focused on financial stabilisation, balance-sheet repair and the restoration of the group's mutual foundations. A major institutional change took place in June 2018, when Groupama SA was transformed into Groupama Assurances Mutuelles, a national mutual reinsurance fund. This reorganisation clarified the role of the central entity and strengthened the mutual architecture linking regional funds, specialist mutuals and subsidiaries. The group later expanded its service ecosystem through the 2021 acquisition of Juritravail, which provides remote legal information and advice. In the same year, Orange agreed to purchase Groupama's 22 percent stake in Orange Bank, ending Groupama's minority participation in that online-banking venture. Groupama has also built a substantial public profile through sponsorship. Its earlier sporting involvement centred on sailing, including the Groupama 3 trimaran and Groupama 4 yacht. In 2018, it entered professional cycling as co-title sponsor of the Groupama-FDJ team. The partnership was extended through 2027, while related programmes such as Ton Club, Ton Maillot and Par passion du vélo have supported amateur clubs, everyday cyclists and cycling safety. The group has also held naming-rights and sponsorship arrangements connected with the Groupama Stadium near Lyon and Groupama Arena in Budapest. In 2023, François Schmitt succeeded Jean-Yves Dagès as chairman of Groupama Assurances Mutuelles. Thierry Martel, who became chief executive of Groupama SA in 2011, continued as chief executive of Groupama Assurances Mutuelles. Later company materials identify Laurent Poupart as chairman and Thierry Martel as chief executive in connection with the group's 2025 results. By 2025-2026, Groupama described itself as operating in ten countries, with roughly 12 million members and customers and 32,000 employees worldwide. Its current development agenda combines organic growth, customer satisfaction, climate resilience, responsible investment, prevention and digital customer services while retaining the mutual principles that shaped its origins.
