Gilgen’s

Gilgen’s is a family-run bakery and confectionery business based in Hennef, Germany. It was founded in 1880 by Franz-Josef Gilgen and is known for its regional handcrafted breads, rolls, and pastries. The company operates several branches in the region, including in Hennef-Uckerath, Hennef-Chronos, and Bonn-Beuel.

The history of Gilgen’s Bäckerei & Konditorei dates back to the 19th century. In 1880, Franz-Josef Gilgen, the great-grandfather and founder, received a 100-kilogram sack of rye from his parents as start-up capital. With this and pioneering spirit, he founded a small bakery in the Hennef district of Uckerath together with his son and daughters. In 1948, Marga Gilgen opened the first shop with an integrated bakery sales area. Eight years later, Josef Gilgen joined the family business with his own bakery and a confectionery café. In 1979, Franz-Josef Gilgen took over the family business from his parents Marga and Josef Gilgen. At that time, the business was still known as 'Gilgen’s Tortenkutsche'.
