Overview
Fuyao Group, formally Fuyao Glass Industry Group Co., Ltd., is a Chinese glass manufacturing company headquartered in Fuqing, Fujian Province. Its principal business is the development, manufacture and sale of automotive glass for vehicle manufacturers and replacement-glass markets. The company also produces float glass and construction-related glass products. Its customers and commercial relationships have included major international automakers such as Ford, General Motors, Subaru, Tesla and Volkswagen. Cao Dewang established the business in 1987 with several partners after gaining experience managing a government-owned glass factory. The company initially pursued an opportunity created by the growing number of imported automobiles in China. Rather than depending only on new-car production, Fuyao focused on replacement windshields and other vehicle glass, helping it build a market position while China's automobile industry was still developing. The name combines the first character of Fuqing with a Chinese term associated with radiance or brightness. Fuyao expanded from a domestic supplier into an international automotive-equipment manufacturer through partnerships, original-equipment contracts and overseas production. In 1996 it formed a joint venture with Saint-Gobain, which held a majority stake. Cao later bought back Saint-Gobain's interest, returning the business to Chinese control. Fuyao became an original-equipment supplier to General Motors in 2006 and subsequently won business from additional global manufacturers, including a Bentley supply contract in 2007. By that period, overseas sales had become a substantial part of the company's business and Fuyao was recognized as one of the largest automotive-glass producers worldwide. The group has used both Chinese and overseas manufacturing assets to serve automakers and aftermarket distributors. Its United States expansion became especially visible after it selected the former General Motors Moraine Assembly site in Ohio for a major automotive-glass operation. Fuyao invested heavily in the plant and established additional American facilities, including a float-glass operation in Illinois and later sites associated with Greenville, South Carolina, and Detroit, Michigan. The American business became the subject of the documentary film American Factory, which portrayed the operational, cultural and labor challenges of integrating Chinese management practices with an American industrial workforce. Fuyao is publicly traded in China. It was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 1993 and on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2015. In the first three quarters of 2023, reference material reported revenue of approximately RMB 23.8 billion and net profit of approximately RMB 4.1 billion; those figures should be understood as period-specific results rather than a current valuation or annual forecast. The company has also pursued technical and environmental cooperation, including a 2021 strategic agreement with BASF concerning sealed automotive glass and ESG-related development. Fuyao's present identity is therefore that of a globally oriented automotive-glass specialist with additional flat-glass capabilities, serving original-equipment manufacturers, replacement markets and construction-related customers.
History
Fuyao began in 1987 in Fuqing, Fujian, under the leadership of Cao Dewang and several business partners. Cao had previously managed a locally owned glass factory, experience that helped him identify an opportunity in China's early automotive market. At a time when domestic automobile production and ownership were limited, imported vehicles created demand for replacement windshields and other vehicle glass. Fuyao built its initial business around this replacement market and gradually developed the production capabilities required by vehicle manufacturers. The company expanded through industrial partnerships and capital-market access. In 1993 it became listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. In 1996 Fuyao established a joint venture with Saint-Gobain, with the French group holding a 51 percent share. Cao subsequently repurchased that stake in 1999. The transaction marked an important step in Fuyao's development as an internationally connected but Chinese-controlled manufacturer. Fuyao's transition into original-equipment supply accelerated during the 2000s. It became a General Motors original-equipment supplier in 2006 and entered additional international vehicle programs, including a Bentley contract in 2007. International sales grew significantly during this period. The company was described as one of the world's leading automotive-glass producers, while also maintaining a strong position in China's automotive-glass market. Its product scope extended beyond vehicle glazing into float glass and construction glass. The next major phase was overseas manufacturing. In 2014 Fuyao announced plans to establish a large United States production presence at the former General Motors Moraine Assembly plant in Ohio. The project involved purchasing part of the site and committing substantial capital to automotive-glass production. Fuyao also acquired a float-glass plant in Mount Zion, Illinois. Additional investment later increased the Ohio site's aftermarket capacity, and operations were expanded or established in other American locations, including Greenville, South Carolina, and Detroit, Michigan. The U.S. operation encountered substantial labor, safety and management challenges. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the Moraine plant for multiple safety violations, including deficiencies involving protective equipment, hazardous-material training and machine guarding. Fuyao subsequently invested in safety improvements and created an environmental-safety team intended to train employees in both English and Mandarin. The plant also became the setting for a contentious unionization campaign. Many workers had previously been employed at the former General Motors facility and sought representation by the United Auto Workers, while management opposed unionization. The 2017 vote rejected representation. Subsequent disputes included allegations of retaliation and improper treatment of union-supporting workers; related cases were settled in 2018 with payments covering back pay and interest. These tensions became internationally visible through the documentary American Factory, which premiered in 2019 and examined the cultural differences, production expectations and labor relations issues at the Ohio plant. The film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The company's American management structure also faced litigation allegations from former executives John Gauthier and Dave Burrows, who claimed that their dismissals involved contractual and national-origin discrimination issues; the reference material does not establish a final judicial outcome. Fuyao continued technical and commercial development in the 2020s. A 2021 agreement with BASF addressed sealed automotive glass and ESG-related cooperation. In July 2024, federal agencies searched the Moraine facility and nearby locations in an investigation described as concerning financial crimes and labor exploitation. Fuyao Glass America said it believed a contractor or third-party labor-service company was the investigation's target and stated that it would cooperate. The group remains a publicly listed Chinese glass manufacturer serving global automotive customers, with complementary float-glass and construction-glass activities.
