Overview
Ford Motor Company Philippines is Ford Motor Company's Philippine subsidiary and local operating organization. It manages the Ford brand's vehicle sales, dealer network, customer support, and market activities in the Philippines. The business has operated through several distinct phases: an early Ford presence and local assembly before the modern subsidiary, a manufacturing-led period from the late 1990s to 2012, and an import-based model after the closure of Ford's Santa Rosa assembly plant. Ford's presence in the Philippines dates to 1913, when Ford Model T vehicles were locally assembled. In 1929, Henry Ford established Pilipinas Ford Car Works, Inc. The company later formed Ford Philippines, Inc. in 1967 and began production at a Sucat, Parañaque facility on May 3, 1968. A body-stamping plant opened in Mariveles, Bataan, in 1976. Ford unexpectedly announced in 1984 that it would end its Philippine operations, and the local manufacturing business was subsequently absent for more than a decade. Ford returned in 1997 through the establishment of Ford Motor Company Philippines, Inc. The renewed operation initially brought in vehicles from the United States, including the Expedition, F-150, Clubwagon, and Lincoln Town Car. Ford then rebuilt a manufacturing presence in the country. A new assembly plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna, opened in September 1999, with reported investment of approximately four billion Philippine pesos. The first vehicle produced there was the Ford Lynx. The facility subsequently built or supported production of models including the Ford Focus, Ford Escape, and Mazda-related vehicles, while also serving regional markets in Southeast Asia. Production of a Mazda-based Ford Ranger began in March 2000. During the manufacturing period, Ford broadened its Philippine range with the Ranger, Escape, Explorer, Everest, Fiesta, and Mustang. The company also used the plant and its regional supply arrangements to produce vehicles for markets including Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. This made the Philippine operation more than a domestic sales branch during its manufacturing years. In 2012, Ford consolidated parts of its Southeast Asian manufacturing footprint and ended production at Santa Rosa. Ford cited the limited local supply base and insufficient economies of scale as reasons for the decision. Around 250 workers were affected, and Ford Philippines sought to address the impact by offering possible employment at other Ford manufacturing facilities overseas. After manufacturing ended, vehicles sold in the Philippines were imported primarily from Thailand and the United States, with some models later sourced from China, Mexico, or Turkey. The former Santa Rosa facility was acquired by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation in 2014. The post-2012 business has remained focused on vehicle distribution, retail, after-sales service, and brand development. Ford continued expanding its Philippine dealership footprint and product portfolio after the plant closure. The local range has included mass-market and commercial vehicles such as the Ranger pickup, Everest SUV, Territory crossover, and Transit van, alongside performance and lifestyle products such as the Mustang, Bronco, and Ranger Raptor. The F-150 returned to the market in 2020 after a lengthy absence, while the Mustang Mach-E was added to the model range from 2025. Ford Philippines therefore combines the resources of a global automotive group with a market-specific portfolio shaped by Philippine demand, regional sourcing, and imported-vehicle logistics.
History
Ford's Philippine history began before the creation of the modern subsidiary. Local assembly of the Ford Model T was reported as early as 1913. In 1929, Henry Ford established Pilipinas Ford Car Works, Inc., creating an early institutional foothold for Ford vehicle production and distribution in the country. A later phase began with the formation of Ford Philippines, Inc. in 1967. Production operations started on May 3, 1968, at a facility in Sucat, Parañaque. Ford expanded its industrial footprint in 1976 by inaugurating a body-stamping plant in Mariveles, Bataan. This manufacturing presence ended abruptly when Ford Philippines announced on March 20, 1984, that it would cease operations by August of that year, following a decision by Ford Motor Company's management. Ford re-entered the Philippines in 1997 through Ford Motor Company Philippines, Inc. The returning operation initially imported United States-built vehicles, including the Expedition, F-150, Clubwagon, and Lincoln Town Car. Ford then invested in a new assembly operation in Santa Rosa, Laguna. The plant opened in September 1999 with reported investment of about four billion Philippine pesos. Its first locally manufactured model was the Ford Lynx. Production expanded to include the Focus and Escape, while Ford also produced Mazda-related vehicles and supplied several Southeast Asian markets. The facility began building the Mazda-based Ford Ranger in March 2000. The renewed operation expanded its domestic range during the 2000s and early 2010s. The Escape, Explorer, and Everest strengthened Ford's SUV offering, while the Ranger provided a major pickup-truck presence. The Fiesta entered the Philippine lineup in August 2010, and the Mustang followed in July 2012. Ford's Philippine manufacturing and distribution system also supported exports or regional supply to Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. In 2012, Ford decided to consolidate Southeast Asian production and close the Santa Rosa plant. The company cited the lack of a sufficiently developed local supply base and inadequate economies of scale. The closure affected approximately 250 employees. Ford Philippines attempted to mitigate the employment impact by offering possible positions at Ford manufacturing facilities in other countries. Following the closure, the company shifted to an import-distribution model. Vehicles sold locally were sourced mainly from Thailand and the United States, although later model programs also used production sites in China, Mexico, and Turkey. The former Santa Rosa plant was acquired by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation in March 2014. Ford nevertheless continued to develop its Philippine sales and service operation, adding dealerships and maintaining a broad vehicle range. Later product developments included the EcoSport in 2014, the Transit van in 2019, the return of the F-150 in 2020, and newer offerings such as the Bronco, Territory, and Mustang Mach-E. The company's Philippine identity has consequently evolved from local manufacturer to importer, retailer, and after-sales organization serving the Ford brand in the domestic market.
