Overview

Flygbussarna is a Swedish airport coach service company providing bus transportation from major cities to airports.

History

Flygbussarna originated in Stockholm in 1989, when Storstockholms Lokaltrafik introduced airport-coach operations. The initiative was initially a public-transport service intended to connect the capital with its airports. In 1990, the activity was incorporated as SL Flygbussarna AB. The ownership structure changed in 2000, when SL sold a majority interest to the company’s management, Atle, and Nordico Invest. The company was renamed FAC Flygbussarna Airport Coaches AB. SL later exited completely by selling its remaining 30 percent stake to People Travel Group in 2005. In 2007, Veolia Transport acquired People Travel Group and consequently took control of Flygbussarna. The brand has periodically explored ways to broaden airport access beyond standard scheduled coaches. In 2009, Swedish advertising agency Acne promoted the service with a full-size coach assembled from approximately 50 wrecked cars. The installation was intended to resemble a Flygbussarna vehicle and communicate the environmental advantage of choosing public transport over private cars. Between November 2016 and September 2018, Flygbussarna operated Door to Gate, a shared-minibus service for journeys to and from Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Customers could arrange a shared ride from or to locations across the Stockholm area. The service was ultimately withdrawn because usage did not reach a sustainable level. Transdev sold Flygbussarna to Vy in December 2019, and the acquisition was completed in March 2020. Vy is a Norwegian state-owned transport group, and Flygbussarna became associated with Vy Buss AB. The business subsequently operated under the Vy Flygbussarna brand while retaining its specialization in Swedish airport transport. The network has connected airports including Stockholm Arlanda, Stockholm Skavsta, Stockholm Västerås, Göteborg Landvetter, Malmö, Visby, and, historically, Stockholm Bromma with surrounding urban areas. Service patterns vary by airport, from direct journeys to Stockholm Cityterminalen or Gothenburg’s Nils Ericson Terminal to routes serving regional cities and local districts. Flygbussarna served Stockholm Bromma Airport from 1992 until the Cityterminalen route was discontinued on December 24, 2024. The change followed the announced cessation of BRA’s operations at Bromma. The current network described for 2025 comprises services at six Swedish airports: Arlanda, Skavsta, Västerås, Landvetter, Malmö, and Visby. Visby service is seasonal, while other routes connect airports with Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, and regional destinations such as Norrköping and Linköping.
