Overview
FIS, formally Fidelity National Information Services, Inc., is a United States-based financial-technology company whose platforms support the operational infrastructure of banks, payment institutions, capital-markets firms, corporations, and card issuers. Rather than operating primarily as a consumer-facing financial institution, FIS supplies the software, processing networks, hosted services, data capabilities, and professional services that allow financial organizations to run accounts, move money, issue cards, manage risk, administer investments, and connect with customers through digital channels. The company traces its origins to Systematics, a financial-software business founded in Little Rock in 1968. Systematics later became part of ALLTEL Information Services. In 2003, Fidelity National Financial acquired the financial-services technology division of ALLTEL and renamed it Fidelity Information Services. The FIS identity subsequently became the principal brand for a consolidating portfolio of financial-technology businesses. Acquisitions of Certegy in 2006, eFunds in 2007, and Metavante in 2009 expanded the company’s banking, payments, electronic-benefits, and data-processing capabilities and helped transform FIS into a large-scale global technology provider. FIS broadened its reach beyond traditional retail-banking technology through the 2015 acquisition of SunGard. That transaction added software and services used by asset managers, investment firms, custodians, treasurers, lenders, clearing organizations, and other capital-markets participants. In 2019, FIS acquired Worldpay, significantly increasing its exposure to merchant acquiring, e-commerce payments, and international payment acceptance. The Worldpay transaction made FIS one of the largest companies in global payment processing and temporarily combined banking technology, capital-markets technology, merchant acquiring, and payment infrastructure under one corporate platform. The company’s portfolio includes core-banking systems, digital-banking tools, payment processing, card and issuer services, fraud and risk solutions, wealth and retirement technology, treasury and lending platforms, trading and asset-servicing software, and related implementation and managed services. Products such as Profile support transaction processing and core banking, while the capital-markets portfolio serves trading, investment management, lending, treasury, and post-trade workflows. Following its 2026 acquisition of Global Payments’ Issuer Solutions business, formerly known as TSYS, FIS also markets FIS Total Issuing Solutions, adding a large global card-issuer-processing business to its banking and payments operations. FIS has undergone substantial portfolio restructuring. In 2023 and early 2024, the company separated the majority of its Worldpay merchant business, selling a 55 percent stake to GTCR while retaining a minority interest. In January 2026, FIS completed the sale of its remaining Worldpay interest to Global Payments and simultaneously acquired Global Payments’ Issuer Solutions business. This reshaped FIS around enterprise financial software, banking technology, capital-markets platforms, issuer processing, and recurring payment-services revenue rather than direct ownership of a merchant-acquiring business. The company describes its scale in terms of global clients, high-volume transaction processing, and a large installed base of financial institutions and corporations. Its business model is primarily business-to-business and infrastructure-oriented: financial institutions and enterprises use FIS technology under software, processing, outsourcing, licensing, subscription, and professional-services arrangements. The company therefore occupies a foundational but often low-visibility position in the financial ecosystem. End users may interact with FIS-supported banking or payment services without seeing the FIS name. As of 2026, FIS is led by President and Chief Ex…
History
FIS originated in 1968 as Systematics, a financial-technology company founded in Little Rock, Arkansas. Systematics developed software and processing capabilities for banks at a time when financial institutions were beginning to automate deposits, account records, transaction processing, and other back-office functions. The company later became part of ALLTEL Information Services and operated as its financial-services technology division. In 2003, Fidelity National Financial acquired ALLTEL Information Services' financial-services division for approximately $1 billion and renamed it Fidelity Information Services. The transaction provided the corporate foundation for the modern FIS organization. FIS then pursued a consolidation strategy, using acquisitions to assemble capabilities across retail banking, payments, electronic funds, card services, wealth management, and related financial infrastructure. The company acquired or integrated businesses including WebTone Technologies, Sanchez Computer Associates, Aurum Technology, BankWare, InterCept, and Kordoba during the early 2000s. A major step came in 2006, when FIS merged with Certegy. Certegy brought payment-related services, check-verification capabilities, and other consumer and merchant-facing processing operations. In 2007, FIS acquired eFunds Corporation, expanding its prepaid, electronic-benefits, fraud, risk, and transaction-processing capabilities. In 2009, FIS acquired Metavante Corporation in a stock transaction valued at approximately $2.94 billion. Metavante strengthened FIS's position in core banking, payments, account processing, and financial-institution software and substantially increased the company's presence among community banks, regional banks, and other financial institutions. During the following decade, FIS broadened its portfolio through both organic development and further acquisitions. It acquired compliance, wealth, trust, mobile-banking, payments, and institutional-investment technology businesses. The 2015 acquisition of SunGard, valued at approximately $9.1 billion, was particularly important because it moved FIS deeper into capital markets. SunGard added systems used by asset managers, banks, trading firms, custodians, lenders, treasury departments, clearing agents, and other institutional clients. This helped establish FIS as a provider not only of retail-banking and payment systems but also of software supporting complex investment and post-trade workflows. In 2019, FIS acquired Worldpay in a transaction initially reported at approximately $35 billion, with later reporting and accounting references using different transaction-value conventions. Worldpay brought merchant acquiring, payment acceptance, e-commerce, and international payment-processing operations. The combination made FIS one of the world's largest payment-processing and financial-technology groups and created a broad portfolio spanning banking, capital markets, issuer processing, merchant acquiring, and enterprise payments. FIS continued to add specialized capabilities after the Worldpay transaction. Its portfolio included businesses such as Virtus Partners, Payrix, Bond Financial Technologies, Torstone Technology, Dragonfly Financial Technologies, Demica, Amount, and Everlink. These transactions reflected an emphasis on embedded payments, digital account opening, capital-markets infrastructure, trade and post-trade technology, supply-chain finance, and specialized banking workflows. The company also pursued a proposed combination with Global Payments in 2020, but discussions ended without a merger. The Worldpay business later became the focus of a significant strategic reset. In February 2023, following pressure from activist investors and a large impairment associated with the merchant business, FIS announced that it would separate Worldpay Merchant Solutions. In July 2023, GTCR agreed to acquire a 55 percent stake in Worldpay at an implied valuation of approximately $18.5 billion. The transaction closed on January 31, 2024, leaving FIS with a 45 percent minority interest and commercial relationships with the newly separated Worldpay. FIS subsequently pursued a more focused enterprise-software and banking strategy. In April 2025, it announced an agreement to acquire Global Payments' Issuer Solutions business, formerly TSYS, while selling its remaining Worldpay interest to Global Payments. The transactions closed on January 9, 2026. FIS acquired the Issuer Solutions business for an enterprise value of $13.5 billion, funded partly with cash and partly through the exchange of its Worldpay interest. The acquired business was rebranded FIS Total Issuing Solutions and added large-scale card-issuer processing, loyalty, prepaid, debit, credit, and related payment services. Leadership also changed during this period. Stephanie Ferris, who joined FIS through the Worldpay acquisition and had previously held senior payments-finance roles, became president and CEO on January 1, 2023. Gary Norcross, who had led FIS as CEO for eight years, moved to the executive-chairman role. By 2026, FIS described itself as a global financial-technology company focused on helping clients run, grow, protect, and connect financial businesses. Its strategic themes included cloud-native and modular modernization, artificial intelligence, data intelligence, operational resilience, recurring revenue, and deeper integration across banking, payments, capital markets, and issuer services.
