Felsenau Brewery

Felsenau Brewery is the oldest brewery in the city of Bern, Switzerland. Founded in 1881 by Johann Gustav Hemmann, it has been brewing beer at the Aare river since then. The brewery produces 10 classic beer styles, including the famous Bärner Müntschi, and is known for combining traditional open fermentation with modern technology.

Founded in 1881 by Johann Gustav Hemmann, who exchanged his entire property for the premises at Hopfenfeld. In 1891, Hemmann installed the first artificial cooling machine in the Bern area, enabling year-round brewing. In 1902, a project to merge with other Bern breweries was rejected. In 1911, the brewery got its own rail connection. In 1914, the first truck replaced ox and horse teams. During World War I, the brewery suffered from raw material shortages. In 1935, breweries formed a convention (later called 'Bierkartell') that lasted until 1991. During World War II, the brewery survived thanks to good preparation and the convention. In the 1960s, economic boom led to steady sales growth.
