Extel
A British financial information, business news and investor research brand originating as The Exchange Telegraph Company.
Last updated August 24, 2026
Overview
Extel originated as The Exchange Telegraph Company Ltd., a British information business established in March 1872 to distribute financial and commercial information from the London Stock Exchange and other markets directly to subscribers. Its early system used ticker-tape telegraph machines installed in offices, banks, gentlemen’s clubs and other commercial locations, giving subscribers a continuous stream of market information at a time when rapid transmission was a major competitive advantage. The company broadened its editorial and information services during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It introduced a parliamentary service in 1876, a general news service in 1879 and a legal information service in 1891. By 1906, the business had established ten branches outside London. A faster financial-information service followed in 1907, while a worldwide news service began in 1913. A dedicated sports service was added during the 1930s. The name Extel came into common use during the 1950s. Over time, the business developed from a telegraph-based news distributor into a broader provider of financial information, business intelligence and related research. One of its notable information products was the Extel card, introduced in 1922. These hard-copy corporate profiles summarized information such as profit and loss, employee numbers, business activities and executive management, making them an early form of corporate snapshot or analyst tear-sheet. The ownership and organizational structure changed repeatedly during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. United Newspapers acquired Extel in 1987. In 1991, Extel formed a financial-news joint venture with Agence France-Presse called AFX News. Pearson acquired Extel in 1993 and incorporated it into Financial Times Information within the Financial Times division. Pearson subsequently organized the operation into Market Data and Research divisions, with the research business retaining the Extel name. Primark acquired the Extel brand from Pearson in 1999, and the brand became part of Thomson Financial in 2000. In 2006, Thomson Financial acquired Agence France-Presse’s interest in AFX News. Thomson Financial and Extel were absorbed into Thomson Reuters in 2007. By that period, and largely since the 1999 transaction, the principal commercial activity associated with Extel had become the Extel Survey rather than the original broad news-agency operation. In 2016, cloud-based corporate-access platform WeConvene acquired Extel. WeConvene sold the business in 2018 to Institutional Investor, which was then owned by Euromoney. The two survey activities were combined under Institutional Investor Research. After Euromoney was taken private and delisted in 2022, Institutional Investor Research was separated from Institutional Investor. In September 2024, the research operation adopted the dormant Extel trading name again. The modern Extel identity is therefore principally associated with investment-community surveys, rankings and research products, while its historical significance lies in its role as an early British financial and general-news distributor.
History
The Exchange Telegraph Company Ltd. was created in March 1872 to transmit financial and commercial information from the London Stock Exchange and other markets to paying subscribers. Its early distribution model relied on ticker-tape telegraph machines placed in commercial and social institutions, including offices, banks and gentlemen’s clubs. This infrastructure allowed subscribers to receive a continuous flow of market information without waiting for periodic printed publications. Extel expanded beyond exchange information relatively quickly. Parliamentary reporting was added in 1876, followed by general news in 1879 and legal information in 1891. The company’s growth led to the opening of ten branches outside London by 1906. It introduced a faster financial service in 1907 and began a worldwide news service in 1913. A separate sports service was operating by the 1930s. The name Extel became the commonly used name for the company in the 1950s. The company’s output eventually covered more than instantaneous news transmission. Its Extel cards, first produced in 1922, supplied compact hard-copy corporate profiles containing information on financial performance, employees, business activities and management. They are notable as an early form of standardized corporate research material and prefigured later company tear-sheets and analyst information products. The business passed through several major owners. United Newspapers acquired it in 1987. In 1991, Extel partnered with Agence France-Presse to establish AFX News, a financial-news venture. Pearson acquired Extel in 1993 and placed it within Financial Times Information, where the business was divided between Market Data and Research. The research division continued to use the Extel name. Primark bought the Extel brand from Pearson in 1999, and Extel became part of Thomson Financial in 2000. Thomson Financial later acquired AFP’s interest in AFX News in 2006. In 2007, Thomson Financial and Extel became part of Thomson Reuters. By then, the original news-agency activities had receded and the Extel Survey had become the central commercial use of the brand. WeConvene acquired Extel in 2016 and sold it to Institutional Investor in 2018. Institutional Investor was then owned by Euromoney, and the two survey operations were combined as Institutional Investor Research. Following Euromoney’s 2022 delisting after a private-equity acquisition, Institutional Investor Research was separated from Institutional Investor. In September 2024, the research operation revived the Extel name. The brand now represents the continuation of a long-running financial-market research and survey tradition rather than the full-service telegraph news agency that existed in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
