Overview

Everyday Health Group is a digital health-media and information business within Ziff Davis. It operates a portfolio of websites and related services aimed at both consumers and healthcare professionals. Its consumer-facing properties cover general health, chronic conditions, pregnancy and parenting, wellness, lifestyle, and patient communities. Its professional businesses provide medical news, continuing education, healthcare rankings, recruitment services, and information for clinicians and other healthcare workers. The business began in 2002, when Benjamin Wolin and Michael Keriakos founded a company initially known as Agora Media. Its early strategy was to create online health content and digital services for established offline health brands. After a merger with Streetmail.com, the company became Waterfront Media. A major turning point came in October 2008, when Waterfront Media merged with Revolution Health in a transaction reported at approximately $300 million. The combined business sought to build a large consumer-health publishing network and projected revenue of about $100 million for 2009. The company adopted the Everyday Health name in 2010. That year it also expanded its professional-health presence through the acquisition of MedPage Today. It explored becoming a public company, but an attempted November 2010 initial public offering did not proceed because of changing securities-market conditions. During the following years, the company broadened beyond conventional web publishing. It developed video and television programming, launched Everyday Health TV through YouTube's Original Channel Initiative, and acquired EQAL, the digital production company associated with lonelygirl15 and other online video projects. Everyday Health became publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange in March 2014 under the symbol EVDY. In 2016, Ziff Davis, then part of j2 Global, agreed to acquire the company. The transaction closed in December 2016, taking Everyday Health private and making it part of the wider Ziff Davis internet and digital-media group. Following the acquisition, the business increasingly emphasized portfolio expansion in professional healthcare, medical education, provider reputation, recruitment, parenting, chronic-condition communities, and wellness. Subsequent acquisitions included Health eCareers, Prime Medical, Castle Connolly, BabyCenter, Migraine Again, Diabetes Daily, DailyOM, and Emma's Diary. These properties complemented the established Everyday Health and What to Expect brands and gave the group a broader presence across healthcare information, patient support, medical careers, provider discovery, pregnancy, parenting, and holistic-lifestyle content. The group also developed partnerships involving Mayo Clinic, Cureus, TrialReach, healthcare conferences, and other health-sector organizations. Everyday Health Group's current model is therefore broader than that of a single online publication. It combines editorial brands, professional information services, communities, education, provider and healthcare-market intelligence, recruitment, advertising, sponsorship, and marketing partnerships. The portfolio includes Everyday Health, What to Expect, BabyCenter, Diabetes Daily, Migraine Again, DailyOM, Emma's Diary, MedPage Today, Health eCareers, Prime Medical or Prime Education, and Castle Connolly. It operates as a health-focused division of Ziff Davis rather than as an independently listed company.

History

Everyday Health Group originated in 2002, when Benjamin Wolin and Michael Keriakos established Agora Media to develop online health content for major traditional health brands. The company later merged with Streetmail.com and adopted the name Waterfront Media. This early period established the business's central model: using digital publishing, consumer information, and partnerships to extend health-related content beyond traditional media channels. In October 2008, Waterfront Media merged with Revolution Health. The deal was reported at approximately $300 million, and the combined company expected to generate about $100 million in revenue in 2009. The merger gave the business a larger audience and a broader collection of consumer-health assets. In 2009, Everyday Health also entered into a multi-year arrangement with Mayo Clinic to add Mayo Clinic consumer content to its health properties, a relationship described as continuing for more than a decade. The company changed its name to Everyday Health in 2010. It attempted to list publicly later that year, but the planned November IPO was withdrawn amid changes in securities-market conditions. The company nonetheless continued expanding, acquiring MedPage Today in December 2010 and thereby adding a professional medical-news and information operation. By 2011, its network included partnerships associated with health personalities and diet brands, while management pursued video and television production as an additional form of digital distribution. In 2011, Everyday Health co-produced a television series with Litton Entertainment, hired former ABC News producer Paul Slavin to help establish a studio operation, and joined YouTube's Original Channel Initiative. The resulting Everyday Health TV programming extended the company’s health and lifestyle content into professionally produced online video. In 2012, the company acquired EQAL, known for the lonelygirl15 web series and the u look haute YouTube channel. EQAL operated as a separate division, and Everyday Health also co-produced Recipe Rehab, a television adaptation of one of its digital series that ran from 2012 to 2015. Everyday Health completed its initial public offering on March 28, 2014, trading on the New York Stock Exchange under EVDY. A strategic ownership change followed in 2016. Ziff Davis, then owned by j2 Global, agreed to acquire Everyday Health in October, and the transaction closed on December 8. The company consequently became part of the Ziff Davis digital-media group and ceased to operate as an independently listed public company. Reports in 2017 indicated that j2 Global was considering divesting less-profitable parts of the business, but the group continued to build selected health and professional-service verticals. The post-acquisition period was defined by targeted portfolio expansion. In 2017, Everyday Health Group acquired Health eCareers from DHI Group for a reported $15 million. Health eCareers connects healthcare employers with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. In 2018, the company acquired Prime Medical, a medical education and research business, and Castle Connolly, known for healthcare-provider ratings and its Top Doctors publications. It also acquired BabyCenter from Johnson & Johnson. BabyCenter was combined with What to Expect within the group's pregnancy-and-parenting division. The group strengthened its industry presence in 2019 by sponsoring the HLTH conference. In 2020 it acquired Migraine Again, adding a focused patient advocacy and community platform. In 2021 it acquired Diabetes Daily and DailyOM, broadening the portfolio into diabetes support, wellness courses, self-improvement, inspiration, and related lifestyle content. At the beginning of 2022, it acquired Emma's Diary as part of the purchase of Lifecycle Marketing Ltd., adding a United Kingdom parenting and baby-advice property. Everyday Health Group also developed partnerships with medical and healthcare organizations. These included marketing work associated with the academic medical journal Cureus and a relationship with TrialReach, a healthcare platform intended to help match patients with clinical trials. Through its combination of editorial sites, communities, professional services, education, rankings, recruiting, and marketing partnerships, the group evolved from a health-content start-up into a diversified digital-health division of Ziff Davis.
