Overview
Eprimo GmbH, styled eprimo, is a German energy supplier headquartered in Neu-Isenburg. It sells electricity and natural gas to customers in Germany. The company was established on 1 July 2005 as a separate sales business by Überlandwerk Groß-Gerau GmbH (ÜWG), which had begun selling electricity nationwide in 1999. Eprimo added gas to its offer in autumn 2007. Since 2020, it has offered natural gas alongside electricity that is exclusively green electricity. Eprimo’s ownership has changed as parts of the German energy sector were reorganized. RWE acquired the sales company from its then joint owners, Stadtwerke Mainz AG and RWE Energy AG, under an agreement signed in December 2006. From 1 January 2007, Eprimo was wholly owned by RWE Vertrieb AG, later associated with innogy SE. Following E.ON’s acquisition of innogy in 2019, Eprimo became part of E.ON; since 2020 it has belonged to E.ON Energie Deutschland GmbH. The company grew its customer base after its launch: the supplied company history reports around 450,000 electricity and gas customers in Germany at the end of 2008, more than 1.2 million in summer 2015, and its 1.5-millionth customer in early 2019. Eprimo is also a default electricity supplier in some municipalities in the Groß-Gerau district. Its stated electricity mix as of 1 July 2025 consisted entirely of other renewable energy sources not subsidized under Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act. The company’s managing directors are Thomas Raßhofer and Dirk Müller.
History
Eprimo was established on 1 July 2005 by Überlandwerk Groß-Gerau GmbH (ÜWG) as a separate sales company. ÜWG had begun selling electricity nationwide in 1999. The new company initially focused on electricity, then expanded into gas: Eprimo began offering gas in autumn 2007. Its ownership changed soon after its establishment. On 22 December 2006, Stadtwerke Mainz AG and RWE Energy AG, then equal shareholders in ÜWG, signed an agreement for RWE to acquire the Eprimo sales company. From 1 January 2007, Eprimo was a wholly owned subsidiary of RWE Vertrieb AG in Dortmund, later associated with innogy SE. The company was entered in the commercial register on 20 September 2007. Eprimo’s customer base grew during its early years. The supplied history records around 140,000 customers and revenue of around €100 million for the 2006 financial year, followed by revenue of €124 million in 2007. At the end of 2008, it supplied gas or electricity to approximately 450,000 customers in Germany. Eprimo reported passing 600,000 customers in October 2009, and serving around 750,000 customers by spring 2010. It reported more than 1.2 million customers in summer 2015 and welcomed its 1.5-millionth customer in early 2019. The source also notes that Eprimo recorded losses in seven of the eight financial years from 2007 through 2014. The company’s history includes a 2016 dispute over customer acquisition. In June of that year, a call-center employee acting for Eprimo contacted customers of Stadtwerke Heidelberg, allegedly misleading them about the purpose of the call and enrolling them in an Eprimo contract without their awareness. The practice was prohibited by a court in November 2016. E.ON’s acquisition of innogy SE on 18 September 2019 also brought Eprimo into the E.ON group. Since 2020, Eprimo has belonged to E.ON Energie Deutschland GmbH. Its offering has included natural gas and, since 2020, exclusively green electricity. In some municipalities in the Groß-Gerau district, it serves as the default electricity supplier. The reported electricity mix as of 1 July 2025 consisted entirely of other renewable energy sources not subsidized under Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act. In February 2023, notices about future advance payments under the gas price brake drew customer complaints because many of the amounts were said to be substantially too high. The company is managed by Thomas Raßhofer and Dirk Müller.
