Overview
Emanuel Ungaro is a French luxury fashion house established in Paris in 1965 by Emanuel Ungaro, the son of an Italian tailor who emigrated to France. The brand grew from its founder’s couture practice into an international fashion business spanning haute couture, women’s ready-to-wear, menswear, accessories, and fragrance. Although the label carries the name of its founder, its identity is best understood as a Parisian design house whose creative language was established by Ungaro and later interpreted by a succession of designers. Ungaro’s early formation was shaped by traditional tailoring and by his apprenticeship with Cristóbal Balenciaga. He later worked with André Courrèges before opening his own house with support from Swiss artist Sonja Knapp and Elena Bruna Fassio. His first collections appeared during the 1960s Space Age period, when designers such as Courrèges, Pierre Cardin, and Paco Rabanne experimented with geometric silhouettes, synthetic materials, short hemlines, and futuristic styling. Ungaro shared some of that era’s modernist vocabulary, but his work was distinguished by a more decorative and emotionally charged approach. He frequently used strong color, graphic pattern, shaped seams, and unexpected styling details, including shorts worn under minidresses. During the 1970s, Ungaro moved away from strict futuristic minimalism. His womenswear became longer, looser, more layered, and more fluid, aligning with the decade’s so-called Soft Look or Big Look. His collaborations with print designer Sonia Knapp helped make complex pattern mixing a defining house signature. The label’s ready-to-wear business, including the Parallèle line introduced in 1971, provided a broader commercial base and helped support couture operations. Ungaro also entered menswear with Ungaro Uomo in 1973 and participated in the Battle of Versailles fashion show later that year. The house reached one of its strongest periods during the 1980s. Ungaro interpreted the decade’s broad-shouldered silhouette through draping, ruching, shirring, layered construction, and exuberant prints. The result was a highly feminine, voluptuous, and often coquettish style that became recognizable internationally. French actress Anouk Aimée served as a longtime friend, muse, and advertising presence. Ungaro’s work during this period strengthened the brand’s position among major Paris couture houses and established a design vocabulary that later creative directors repeatedly revisited. The brand expanded its fragrance activities with Diva in 1983, followed by products including Senso, Ungaro, Ungaro pour l’Homme, Desnuda, and Apparition. By the late 1980s, the business operated couture, ready-to-wear, menswear, and lower-priced lines. It also introduced market-specific and extended-size labels, including Emanuel by Emanuel Ungaro, Emanuel Petite, and Ungaro Woman. In 1996, Ungaro entered a partnership with Salvatore Ferragamo, ending a long period in which the founder had retained unusually strong independence from outside investment. Emanuel Ungaro Parfums was subsequently established by Ungaro, Ferragamo, and Bulgari. Giambattista Valli served as creative director from 1998 to 2004 and was credited by Ungaro with revitalizing the house. After Ungaro retired in 2005, the label was sold to Asim Abdullah for a reported US$84 million. The following years were marked by frequent changes in artistic leadership, including Vincent Darré, Peter Dundas, Esteban Cortázar, Estrella Archs, Giles Deacon, Fausto Puglisi, and Marco Colagrossi. A particularly troubled episode occurred in 2009, when Lindsay Lohan was appointed artistic adviser alongside Archs. The arrangement generated intense criticism during Paris Fashion Week and was followed by Lohan’s departure and Archs’s dismissal. Aeffe assumed production and distribution responsibilities in 2012, while Fausto Puglisi’s appointment helped position the house for a renewed Paris fashion presence. In 2021, Kobi Halpe…
History
Emanuel Ungaro was born on 13 February 1933 in Aix-en-Provence, France, to an Italian immigrant family. His father was a tailor who had fled Italy during the fascist period and introduced his son to garment construction at an early age. Ungaro received a sewing machine while still young, and the discipline of tailoring remained central to his later couture practice. At 22, Ungaro moved to Paris. He joined the house of Cristóbal Balenciaga, where he developed an appreciation for architectural construction, precise proportion, and disciplined atelier technique. He subsequently worked with André Courrèges, another Balenciaga-trained designer. Ungaro later maintained that similarities between his early work and Courrèges's designs reflected their shared training rather than imitation. In 1965, with the assistance of Swiss artist Sonja Knapp and Elena Bruna Fassio, Ungaro founded his own fashion house in Paris. His early work formed part of the 1960s Space Age movement, characterized by geometric shapes, short skirts, double-faced wool, synthetic textiles, plastics, metals, helmets, visors, and high boots. Ungaro distinguished these modernist elements with a more playful styling vocabulary. He was also associated with the practical use of shorts beneath minidresses, making very short silhouettes easier to wear. By 1968, the house had added ready-to-wear. The move gave Ungaro a recurring commercial revenue stream while allowing him to preserve a couture operation without immediately relying on extensive licensing. The Parallèle ready-to-wear line, introduced in 1971, became an important part of the business. During the 1970s, Ungaro moved from futuristic minimalism toward longer, looser, and more layered clothing. He developed a richly decorative approach built around color, fluidity, and mixed prints, much of it connected to his work with Sonia Knapp. These collections aligned with the period's Soft Look and layered, peasant-influenced fashions. Ungaro launched Ungaro Uomo in 1973 and participated in the Battle of Versailles fashion show on 28 November of that year. The house continued to develop both couture and commercial lines. In the 1980s, Ungaro reached a particularly influential phase. He reinterpreted broad shoulders and assertive silhouettes through shirring, ruching, draping, ornate surface treatment, and vivid prints. His work combined technical construction with overt sensuality and became associated with a feminine, expressive, and sometimes coquettish Parisian image. Anouk Aimée, a close friend and longtime muse, appeared in Ungaro advertising during this period and helped embody the house's cultivated cinematic persona. Fragrance became a major extension of the brand. Diva was introduced in 1983, followed by Senso in 1987 and further men's and women's fragrances during the early 1990s. By 1989, the business was presenting two haute couture collections and two women's ready-to-wear collections each year, alongside lower-priced labels such as Ter and Solo Donna. Its menswear portfolio included Classics by Ungaro and Ungaro pour l'Homme Paris. Other extensions, including Emanuel by Emanuel Ungaro for the United States market, Emanuel Petite, and Ungaro Woman, were not designed directly by the founder but broadened the label's commercial reach. In 1996, Ungaro entered a partnership with Salvatore Ferragamo. The following year, Ungaro, Ferragamo, and Bulgari established Emanuel Ungaro Parfums, enabling additional fragrance development including Fleur de Diva, Desnuda, and Apparition. Giambattista Valli served as creative director from 1998 to 2004. Ungaro credited Valli with renewing the house and regarded him as a successor in the creative tradition. Ungaro retired in 2005, and Gruppo Ferragamo sold the label to Asim Abdullah for a reported US$84 million. The post-founder period became more unstable. Vincent Darré and Peter Dundas had short tenures, followed by Esteban Cortázar from 2007 to 2009. Cortázar's departure was connected to a reported disagreement over the label's plan to work with Lindsay Lohan. In 2009, Lohan was named artistic adviser while Estrella Archs was brought in as head designer. Their debut was met with shock and criticism during Paris Fashion Week, and both the arrangement and the collection became emblematic of the house's difficulty in reconciling publicity-driven repositioning with couture credibility. Lohan left in 2010 amid legal uncertainty, and Archs was dismissed. Giles Deacon led the label from 2010 to 2012. In 2012, Aeffe took over production and distribution, and Fausto Puglisi became creative director. Puglisi's appointment was associated with an effort to restore visibility in Paris. Marco Colagrossi followed in 2017 and remained in the role until approximately 2020. Kobi Halperin became the house's creative designer from the Resort 2021 season. His appointment was supported by a licensing structure involving Komar LLC and Emanuel Ungaro SAS, with the collection initially launching through Saks Fifth Avenue. Halperin's interpretation has emphasized contemporary women's apparel while drawing on the archive's Parisian elegance, craftsmanship, expressive color, and feminine detailing. Official Ungaro materials and fashion-industry listings document continuing seasonal collections, including 2025 apparel and menswear activity. Emanuel Ungaro died in Paris on 21 December 2019, aged 86, after a period of illness. The house continues to trade under his name. In August 2025, Puck reported that Law Roach and financial backers were preparing a possible acquisition from Asim Abdullah. Because the report described an intended or prospective purchase rather than a completed transaction, ownership should be treated as unresolved beyond Abdullah's reported ownership.
