Overview

Elanco is an American animal-health company whose products are used in companion animals, livestock, and aquaculture. Its portfolio spans prescription medicines, vaccines, parasiticides, feed additives, diagnostics-related services, and nutritional or production technologies. The company serves veterinarians, pet owners, farmers, food producers, distributors, and animal-health professionals in markets around the world. The business traces its origins to Eli Lilly and Company's early veterinary and agricultural research. In 1953, Lilly introduced an antibiotic for veterinary use and combined plant and animal-science activities within an agro-industrial division. During the 1960s, the operation adopted the Elanco name, derived from Eli Lilly and Company. Although the business initially included plant-science work, its strategic direction gradually moved toward animal health and food quality. By the 1990s, it had been reorganized as Elanco Animal Health and was focused primarily on medicines and related products for animals. Elanco expanded through a combination of internal research, licensing, partnerships, and acquisitions. The purchase of Ivy Animal Health in 2007 strengthened its companion-animal activities. During the following decade, it added products and capabilities through transactions involving Pfizer Animal Health rights, Janssen Animal Health, ChemGen, Lohmann Animal Health, Novartis Animal Health, and selected Boehringer Ingelheim vaccine assets. The Novartis transaction was particularly significant because it broadened Elanco's presence across pet, livestock, and vaccine categories. Elanco also developed Elanco Knowledge Solutions, a data and analytics business intended to help food-animal producers improve operational and production decisions. The company became independent from Eli Lilly through a 2018 initial public offering plan and a 2019 separation. It began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ELAN. Independence enabled Elanco to pursue a more concentrated animal-health strategy and a more active acquisition program. In 2019 it acquired Aratana Therapeutics, adding companion-animal medicines including products associated with canine osteoarthritis, and announced the acquisition of Prevtec Microbia, a developer of bacterial-disease prevention technologies for food animals. It also agreed to acquire Bayer's animal-health business, a transaction completed in 2020 that materially expanded its pet-health and livestock portfolio. The Bayer transaction brought brands such as Seresto and Credelio into Elanco's portfolio, while later acquisitions added further companion-animal research and commercial capabilities. In 2021, Elanco completed its purchase of KindredBio, known as Kindred Biosciences, strengthening its pipeline and specialty-pet focus. The company has also invested in a new global headquarters campus in Indianapolis, designed as part of a broader animal-health innovation district. Elanco's commercial strategy is commonly organized around two major areas: pet health and farm-animal health. Pet-health products address parasitic disease, dermatology, pain, osteoarthritis, and preventive care. Farm-animal products include vaccines, anti-infectives, feed additives, and technologies intended to improve animal productivity, disease control, and sustainability. In 2024, Elanco emphasized newer growth products such as Zenrelia and Credelio Quattro, and it positioned Bovaer, a methane-reducing feed ingredient for dairy cattle, as part of its sustainability offering. The company operates under a corporate-responsibility framework called Healthy Purpose. Its stated priorities include supporting food security, helping farmers reduce environmental impacts, and advancing animal welfare and health. In 2024, Elanco sold its aquaculture business and related assets to Merck Animal Health for approximately $1.3 billion in cash, reflecting a strategic decision to concentrate on pet health and livesto…

History

Elanco began within Eli Lilly and Company's agricultural and veterinary research activities. In 1953, Lilly introduced a veterinary antibiotic and combined plant- and animal-science work under an agro-industrial organization led by George Barnes. During the 1960s, the business was reorganized as Elanco Products, a name derived from Eli Lilly and Company. The operation initially covered both plant science and animal science. During the 1980s, however, its research emphasis moved away from plant sciences and toward animal health and food quality. A further reorganization in the 1990s produced Elanco Animal Health, with the business focused on animal medicines, vaccines, and related technologies. Elanco began building a larger companion-animal presence through the acquisition of Ivy Animal Health in 2007. In 2008 it entered a partnership with Heifer International, and in 2009 it launched Elanco Knowledge Solutions, a data and analytics activity for the food-animal sector. Further expansion followed in Europe and livestock health: Elanco acquired European rights to a Pfizer Animal Health product portfolio and an Irish manufacturing site in 2010, purchased Janssen Animal Health in 2011, and acquired ChemGen in 2012. The company accelerated its acquisition program in 2014. It purchased Lohmann SE and Lohmann Animal Health and acquired Novartis Animal Health for $5.4 billion. The Novartis transaction broadened Elanco's international reach and added important companion-animal and livestock products. In 2013, before those transactions, Elanco had also invested $100 million in China Animal Healthcare. In 2016, it acquired selected vaccines from Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica for $885 million. Eli Lilly announced in 2018 that it intended to separate Elanco through a public offering. Elanco began trading independently on the New York Stock Exchange in 2019 under the symbol ELAN. That year brought several strategic developments: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved rabacfosadine for canine lymphoma; Elanco acquired Aratana Therapeutics; it announced the acquisition of Prevtec Microbia; and it agreed to buy Bayer's animal-health business for $7.6 billion. The Bayer transaction closed in 2020 and added major pet-health and livestock brands, including Seresto and Credelio. In December 2020, Elanco announced plans for a new global headquarters in Indianapolis on the site of a former General Motors stamping plant. Construction officially began in April 2022. The project was associated with an animal-health innovation district and was intended to create a central location for the company's global operations and research-oriented activities. Elanco acquired Kindred Biosciences in 2021, adding development programs and expertise in companion-animal medicines. The company subsequently faced scrutiny concerning Seresto flea and tick collars. A 2022 report by a U.S. House Oversight and Reform subcommittee cited tens of thousands of reported pesticide-poisoning incidents and more than 2,000 reported pet deaths. In July 2023, after a multi-year review, the EPA said it could not establish that Seresto caused the reported deaths. The agency nevertheless limited the collar's registration to five years rather than the usual fifteen and agreed with Elanco on enhanced adverse-event monitoring and annual reporting. In 2024, Elanco pursued a sharper strategic focus on higher-value pet health and livestock sustainability. It sold its aquaculture business, including related products and manufacturing sites, to Merck Animal Health for approximately $1.3 billion in cash. Its newer commercial priorities included Zenrelia for canine dermatology, Credelio Quattro for broad parasite protection, and Bovaer, a feed ingredient intended to reduce methane emissions from dairy cattle. Elanco continues to operate as a global animal-health company with businesses serving both companion animals and food-producing animals.
