Overview

Eidos-Montréal is a Canadian video game development studio headquartered in Montreal, Quebec. It was established in 2007 as a Canadian subsidiary of Eidos Interactive, with Stéphane D'Astous serving as its founding general manager. The studio was created to develop large-scale, story-led games while using a development model built around relatively small teams working over longer production cycles. Its early identity was closely tied to Deus Ex, a science-fiction immersive-simulation and action role-playing franchise that had been dormant after the original series. Eidos-Montréal's first major project, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, reintroduced the property to a new generation and became the studio's defining early success. The company expanded its portfolio with Thief, a reboot of the stealth series, and later worked on the Tomb Raider franchise in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics. Eidos-Montréal developed Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and contributed to Shadow of the Tomb Raider, broadening its reputation for cinematic storytelling, exploration, stealth systems, role-playing mechanics and detailed fictional worlds. The studio's work has generally occupied the premium console and PC market rather than the mobile or free-to-play segments. Corporate ownership changed several times during the studio's history. Eidos Interactive became part of Square Enix in 2009, making Eidos-Montréal part of Square Enix's European organization. In 2022, Square Enix agreed to sell its western development assets, including Eidos-Montréal, to Embracer Group. The transaction was completed in August 2022, and the studio's assets were placed under CDE Entertainment, the renamed organizational structure used for the acquired Square Enix Europe businesses. The studio also participated in Square Enix's Marvel partnership. Together with Crystal Dynamics, it developed Marvel's Avengers, and it later developed Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Guardians of the Galaxy used Eidos-Montréal's proprietary Dawn Engine and emphasized character relationships, dialogue and linear narrative progression. After the Embracer acquisition, the studio moved toward Unreal Engine 5 for newer work, aiming to reduce the burden of maintaining a proprietary technology platform and concentrate more heavily on content production. Eidos-Montréal has undergone substantial organizational change. Eidos-Shanghai was incorporated into the Montreal organization in 2019 but later moved to Gearbox Entertainment in 2022. Eidos-Sherbrooke, a research and development initiative established in Quebec in 2020, was closed in early 2023. The cancellation of an early-stage Deus Ex project in 2024 was followed by layoffs, including 97 employees confirmed by the studio, with further reductions reported in 2025 and 2026. Despite these changes, Eidos-Montréal has continued to operate as a development studio and has taken supporting roles on projects outside its own established franchises, including support for Microsoft's Fable and co-development work on Grounded 2 with Obsidian Entertainment.

History

Eidos-Montréal originated in Eidos Interactive's plan to establish a Montreal development subsidiary. The plan was announced in February 2007, Eidos Interactive Corporation was incorporated in March, and the studio formally opened on 26 November 2007 under founding general manager Stéphane D'Astous. Its production philosophy emphasized comparatively small teams working for longer periods, a model intended to support detailed worlds and complex narrative games. The studio announced a Deus Ex project during its founding year and later announced work on the fourth Thief installment in 2009. The studio's first major release, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, served as a revival of the Deus Ex property and established Eidos-Montréal as a significant developer of story-driven action role-playing games. It subsequently developed Thief and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, while also contributing to the wider Tomb Raider production group. Eidos-Montréal's role in Shadow of the Tomb Raider placed it alongside Crystal Dynamics in the development of another major Eidos-associated franchise. Eidos-Montréal became part of Square Enix's European operations after Square Enix acquired Eidos in 2009. The transition produced both expansion and internal friction. D'Astous resigned in July 2013, citing irreconcilable differences with Square Enix. In March 2014, Square Enix announced that 27 Eidos-Montréal employees had been laid off. The studio nevertheless continued to grow, reporting a workforce of more than 500 people in 2018. Technology became an important part of the studio's identity. In December 2014, Eidos introduced the Dawn Engine, a proprietary technology platform derived from a heavily modified version of IO Interactive's Glacier 2 technology. The engine was designed to address perceived creative limitations in existing tools and supported sophisticated conversations, cutscenes, lighting, environmental density, dynamic objects and character-hair rendering. It powered Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and was later used for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, with later additions including ray tracing, DLSS and improved mirror rendering. Eidos-Montréal expanded its regional organization during the late 2010s and early 2020s. Eidos-Shanghai, founded in 2008 for outsourcing work, became part of Eidos-Montréal in 2019. In 2020, Square Enix announced Eidos-Sherbrooke, a research and development studio intended to collaborate with nearby universities and investigate new computing technologies. It was planned to grow from an initially remote team of about 20 toward 100 employees, but the studio closed in late January 2023. Eidos-Shanghai was separated from Eidos-Montréal in November 2022 and transferred to Gearbox Entertainment as Gearbox Studio Shanghai. The studio also became involved in Square Enix's Marvel strategy. A 2017 partnership between Square Enix and Marvel led to Marvel's Avengers, developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal. At E3 2021, Eidos-Montréal's Guardians of the Galaxy project was publicly announced. The game used Dawn Engine technology and placed greater emphasis on a single-player narrative, dialogue choices and relationships among the central characters. In 2022, Square Enix agreed to sell Eidos-Montréal and other western assets to Embracer Group. Embracer expressed interest in developing sequels, remakes and remasters associated with the acquired studios' established properties, including Deus Ex and Thief. The acquisition closed on 26 August 2022, and the assets were organized under CDE Entertainment. Around the same period, Eidos-Montréal moved away from Dawn Engine for new work and adopted Unreal Engine 5, reflecting a strategic preference for using an established external platform rather than developing a proprietary engine alongside each game. A new Deus Ex project was reported in November 2022 to be at a very early stage. In January 2024, reports stated that Embracer had cancelled the project after approximately two years of development and had initiated layoffs. Eidos-Montréal confirmed that 97 people were affected. Further reductions followed, including 75 layoffs reported in March 2025 and 124 more in March 2026. The studio has also diversified its production role: Microsoft announced in 2024 that Eidos-Montréal was supporting development of Fable, while a 2025 Xbox Games Showcase announcement identified the studio as a co-developer of Grounded 2 alongside Obsidian Entertainment.
