Overview
dormakaba is a Swiss multinational security and access-solutions group headquartered in Rümlang, Switzerland. The company supplies systems and hardware used to control, secure, monitor, and manage movement through buildings and other controlled environments. Its portfolio spans mechanical and electronic locking, door-control equipment, automatic and manual entrance systems, access-control software and hardware, key-cutting and key-management equipment, hotel and workplace access, physical security, and specialized architectural partition and door solutions. The present group was created through the combination of the Swiss Kaba Group and the German Dorma group. Kaba traced its origins to a locksmith and cash-register business founded in Zurich in 1862, while Dorma developed from Dörken & Mankel KG, founded in Ennepetal, Germany, in 1908. The two businesses accumulated complementary capabilities: Kaba was strongly associated with locks, keys, access control, security hardware, and related technology, while Dorma was known for door hardware, door closers, entrance systems, and architectural access products. Their planned merger was announced in April 2015, received competition approval near the end of August, and the combined group began operating on 1 September 2015. Before the merger, Kaba expanded internationally through acquisitions and partnerships. Its 2001 purchase of Unican Security Systems strengthened its North American presence and brought the Silca, Ilco, and Kaba Mas brands into the group. Further acquisitions in 2006 added the Chinese Wah Yuet Group, the US-based Computerized Security Systems business with the Saflok and La Gard brands, and the Dutch company H. Cillekens Zn. B.V. Kaba also developed joint ventures with India's Minda Group. In 2011, it sold its door-automation business to Japan's Nabtesco Group, illustrating the portfolio management that preceded the Dorma combination. The group operates through the global commercial areas Access Solutions and Key & Wall Solutions, supported by functions including operations and innovation. From 1 July 2023, the Asia-Pacific OEM business was placed within Key & Wall Solutions, which was renamed Key & Wall Solutions and OEM. The company's stated market emphasis centers on Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Ireland, North America, and Australia, which together represent the largest Access Solutions markets, alongside high-growth focus markets such as China and India. dormakaba serves commercial buildings, offices, hotels, healthcare facilities, transport and infrastructure sites, industrial and institutional premises, and selected residential applications. It sells under the dormakaba master brand as well as established specialist brands including Dorma Hüppe, Silca, Ilco, BEST, Kilargo, Modernfold, Probuck, and Skyfold. As a publicly traded company on the SIX Swiss Exchange, dormakaba combines a long industrial heritage with a broad international product and brand portfolio. Its positioning is that of an integrated access and security partner rather than a single-product lock manufacturer, with offerings ranging from individual mechanical components to coordinated building-access systems. dormakaba Holding AG, marketed principally as dormakaba, is a Swiss global security and access-solutions group headquartered in Rümlang near Zurich. The company supplies products and integrated systems used to control, monitor and manage movement through buildings, rooms, sites and other secure areas. Its portfolio spans mechanical and electronic locking, access-control software and hardware, door technology, hotel and hospitality access, key-cutting and key-management equipment, workforce time recording, entrance systems, movable partition systems and related architectural products. Through the dormakaba master brand and a portfolio of established specialist brands, the group serves commercial buildings, hospitals, airports, hotels, public facilities, manufacturing sites, banks, retailers and residential applications. The present group was created in 2015 through the combination of the Swiss Kaba Group and the German Dorma Group. Although dormakaba as a corporate identity dates from that merger, the businesses behind it have much older histories. Kaba traces its origins to a locksmith and cash-register business founded by Franz Bauer in Zurich in 1862. Its later development included the commercialization of a reversible-key cylinder lock invented by Fritz Schori in 1934. The name Kaba was derived from Bauer's name and the German expression associated with his cash-register trade. Dorma's predecessor, Dörken & Mankel KG, was established in Ennepetal, Germany, in 1908 by Wilhelm Dörken and Rudolf Mankel and subsequently developed into a major door-technology company. Kaba expanded from traditional locks into electronic security, identification and access management through acquisitions and international development. In 1995, Bauer Holding AG adopted the name Kaba Holding AG and its shares were listed on the Zurich stock exchange. The 2001 acquisition of Unican Security Systems strengthened Kaba's presence in North America and brought the Silca, Ilco and Kaba Mas businesses into its broader portfolio. Further acquisitions in 2006 included the Wah Yuet Group in China, Computerized Security Systems in the United States, with the Saflok and La Gard brands, and the Dutch company H. Cillekens Zn. B.V. Kaba also formed joint ventures with India's Minda Group. In 2011, it sold its door-automation business to Japan's Nabtesco Group. Dorma and Kaba announced their planned merger on 30 April 2015. Following competition-authority approvals, the combined dormakaba Group began operating on 1 September 2015. The merger brought together Kaba's strengths in locking, access control, key systems and identification with Dorma's expertise in door hardware, automatic doors, glass fittings, movable walls and related building technology. The combined group retained a broad multi-brand structure while using dormakaba as its principal global identity. Since 1 July 2023, the organization has been arranged around the global commercial activities Access Solutions and Key & Wall Solutions, supported by global functions including operations and innovation. The Asia-Pacific OEM business was incorporated into Key & Wall Solutions and OEM. The group has identified Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Ireland, North America and Australia as its five largest Access Solutions markets, while China and India are treated as important growth markets. This structure reflects a strategic emphasis on concentrating resources in core markets while maintaining a worldwide product and service footprint. dormakaba positions itself as a provider of complete access ecosystems rather than merely a lock manufacturer. Its offering combines physical hardware, electronic credentials, software, doors, entrance systems and service capabilities. The company operates through the dormakaba name as well as brands including Dorma Hüppe, Silca, Ilco, BEST, Kilargo, Modernfold, Probuck and Skyfold. History
The history of dormakaba combines the development of two established European security and door-technology businesses. The older lineage belongs to Kaba. In 1862, Franz Bauer established a locksmith shop and cash-register factory in Zurich. The enterprise changed ownership in 1915, when it was sold to Leo Bodmer and renamed Bauer AG. In 1934, inventor Fritz Schori developed a cylinder lock using a reversible key. Bauer AG patented the design and gave it a name derived from Franz Bauer's association with cash-register manufacture: Kaba, an abbreviation formed from the German expression connected with that trade. The lock helped provide the name around which the later Kaba business was built. The second lineage began in Germany. Wilhelm Dörken and his brother-in-law Rudolf Mankel founded Dörken & Mankel KG in Ennepetal in 1908. The company subsequently became known as Dorma. Its activities developed around door hardware, door-control technologies, entrance systems, and related architectural applications. Over time, Dorma became an established supplier of products used in commercial buildings and other environments where the movement of people through doors and entrances must be controlled or facilitated. Kaba pursued corporate and international expansion during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Bauer Holding AG changed its name to Kaba Holding AG in 1995, and its shares were listed on the Zurich stock exchange. In 2001, Kaba acquired Unican Security Systems, giving it a stronger foothold in North America and adding the Silca, Ilco, and Kaba Mas brands to its broader portfolio. In 2006, Kaba expanded further by acquiring the Wah Yuet Group in China, Computerized Security Systems in the United States, and Dutch company H. Cillekens Zn. B.V. The Computerized Security Systems transaction also brought the Saflok and La Gard brands. Kaba entered joint ventures with India's Minda Group as part of its international development. In 2011, it divested its Door Automation branch to Japan's Nabtesco Group. The strategic logic for combining Kaba and Dorma was based on the complementary nature of their businesses. Kaba contributed expertise in locks, keys, access control, security systems, and specialized brands, while Dorma added extensive door-control, entrance, and architectural access capabilities. The companies announced their intended merger on 30 April 2015. Competition authorities approved the transaction near the end of August, and the combined dormakaba Group began operating on 1 September 2015. The group retained a Swiss corporate base and continued as a publicly traded company on the SIX Swiss Exchange. After the merger, dormakaba developed a broad international operating model covering commercial access, key and wall solutions, and related OEM activity. Its brands include dormakaba, Dorma Hüppe, Silca, Ilco, BEST, Kilargo, Modernfold, Probuck, and Skyfold. These brands cover mechanical and electronic access, key production, door hardware, movable and folding walls, and specialized entrance or partition systems. A further organizational change took effect on 1 July 2023. The group structured its global commercial core business around Access Solutions and Key & Wall Solutions, supported by global functions such as operations and innovation. The Asia-Pacific OEM business was transferred to Key & Wall Solutions, which was renamed Key & Wall Solutions and OEM. The company identifies Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Ireland, North America, and Australia as its five largest Access Solutions markets, while China and India are treated as important growth markets. This structure reflects dormakaba's continuing shift from a collection of regional product businesses toward an integrated global provider of access and security infrastructure. The history of dormakaba combines the development of two European security and building-technology businesses: Kaba in Switzerland and Dorma in Germany. Kaba's roots reach back to 1862, when Franz Bauer established a locksmith shop and cash-register factory in Zurich. The business was sold to Leo Bodmer in 1915 and renamed Bauer AG. In 1934, inventor Fritz Schori developed a cylinder lock using a reversible key. Bauer AG patented the design and marketed it under the Kaba name, derived from Bauer's name and the German terminology associated with his cash-register manufacturing activities. This innovation helped establish the company's identity in locking technology. Dorma originated in 1908, when Wilhelm Dörken and his brother-in-law Rudolf Mankel founded Dörken & Mankel KG in Ennepetal, Germany. The business later became known as Dorma and developed a substantial position in door technology, including door hardware, automatic doors, glass fittings and movable partition systems. Kaba broadened its business during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. In 1995, Bauer Holding AG changed its name to Kaba Holding AG, and the company became listed on the Zurich stock exchange. In 2001, Kaba acquired Unican Security Systems, giving it a stronger North American presence and adding the Silca, Ilco and Kaba Mas brands. In 2006, it acquired the Wah Yuet Group in China, Computerized Security Systems in the United States and H. Cillekens Zn. B.V. The United States transaction brought the Saflok and La Gard brands into the group. Kaba also developed joint ventures with India's Minda Group. In 2011, it divested its door-automation branch to the Japanese Nabtesco Group. On 30 April 2015, Kaba and Dorma announced their intention to merge. The transaction was cleared by the relevant competition authorities at the end of August, and the combined dormakaba Group began operating on 1 September 2015. The merger united Kaba's expertise in mechanical and electronic access, identification and key systems with Dorma's door and architectural-technology capabilities. The resulting organization served both traditional security markets and the growing market for integrated electronic access management. After the merger, dormakaba continued operating a portfolio of specialized brands, including dormakaba, Dorma Hüppe, Silca, Ilco, BEST, Kilargo, Modernfold, Probuck and Skyfold. The group serves a broad range of professional and institutional customers, from commercial property owners and hospitals to hotels, airports, public authorities and industrial facilities. From 1 July 2023, dormakaba organized its global commercial operations into Access Solutions and Key & Wall Solutions, supported by global functions such as operations and innovation. The Asia-Pacific OEM business was moved into Key & Wall Solutions and renamed Key & Wall Solutions and OEM. The group describes Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Ireland, North America and Australia as its five largest Access Solutions markets, while China and India are among its priority growth markets. This structure emphasizes an integrated international offering while focusing resources on selected core markets.
