Overview
Dentsu International is the international business of Japan-based Dentsu Group, operating outside Japan across media, creative communications, customer experience management, marketing technology, analytics, sports marketing and content production. The business is headquartered in London and evolved from the international assets of Aegis Group, a British marketing-services company whose best-known origin was the Carat media agency, founded in France in 1966. Dentsu Group agreed to acquire Aegis in 2012, and completed the transaction in March 2013 after receiving regulatory clearances. The acquisition gave Dentsu a substantial international platform and brought the former Aegis agencies into the Japanese group's overseas organization. In January 2014, Dentsu established Dentsu Aegis Network to manage Dentsu-owned businesses outside Japan, combining the former Aegis operations with Dentsu's international companies. The network subsequently expanded through a long sequence of acquisitions in digital marketing, data, performance media, creative services, business-to-business marketing, production, consulting and customer-experience capabilities. Important additions included Merkle in the United States, Cardinal Path in Canada, WATConsult in India, Soap Creative in Australia, Grip in Canada, BJL in the United Kingdom and a range of specialist agencies across Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Americas. The organization has included a broad portfolio of agency and specialist brands. Its media and performance businesses have included Carat, iProspect, Vizeum, Dentsu X, Amplifi and Amnet. Creative, digital and experience capabilities have included Dentsu, Isobar, mcgarrybowen, Soap Creative and Merkle, while Posterscope has represented out-of-home media expertise. The wider network has also contained agencies and specialist businesses such as 360i, BJL, The StoryLab, Data2Decisions, Mitchell Communications, Cardinal Path and psLIVE. Services have therefore ranged from communications strategy and media planning to digital creative execution, customer relationship management, marketing analytics, commerce, content creation, sports marketing and brand tracking. In 2019, Dentsu announced that Dentsu Aegis Network would be renamed Dentsu as part of a One Dentsu strategy. The international business adopted the name Dentsu International in October 2020. The reorganization sought to simplify the offer around three broad areas: media, customer relationship management and creative. This structure was intended to make the network easier for clients to navigate while connecting agency brands with technology, data and consulting capabilities. Dentsu International continued to broaden its customer-experience and technology portfolio after the rebrand. Acquisitions and investments included LiveArea, Dig Into, Pexlify, Extentia, Aware Services and Tag between 2021 and 2023. These transactions strengthened its capabilities in commerce, Salesforce consulting, software and technology services, consulting, and content production. The business is positioned as an integrated communications and marketing-services partner for multinational and local clients, combining global agency networks with specialist market knowledge. Reference material describes the international organization as having approximately 66,000 people across 143 countries, although the precise current workforce may vary over time.
History
Dentsu International's history combines the development of the Aegis media network with Dentsu Group's expansion beyond Japan. Its most important predecessor was Carat, established in France in 1966 by Gilbert Gross as Centrale d'Achats Radio, Affichage, Télévision. Carat developed as a specialist media-buying business and became part of the WCRS Group after WCRS acquired it in 1988. In 1989, Peter Scott, one of the founders associated with WCRS, established Aegis as a separate company built around the group's media-buying activities and the Carat business. The company formally adopted the Aegis Group name in 1990. Aegis expanded its international marketing-services footprint through organic growth and acquisitions. Its portfolio increasingly extended beyond traditional media buying into digital, data, creative, performance marketing and specialist communications. In January 2012, Aegis acquired Singapore-based digital agency The Upper Storey. Later that year, Dentsu agreed to acquire Aegis for about £3.16 billion. Aegis shareholders approved the transaction in August 2012, and completion followed on 26 March 2013 after the necessary regulatory clearances. The transaction brought a major international agency group into Dentsu's ownership and gave Dentsu a substantial platform for serving clients outside Japan. Dentsu Aegis Network was launched in January 2014 to manage Dentsu's international businesses together with the former Aegis operations. During the following years, the network pursued an active acquisition strategy. It added digital and social agencies such as WATConsult and Soap Creative; regional creative and advertising businesses including Aspac Creative Communications, Jayme Syfu, Grip, Gravity Media and Fractal Ink; and data, analytics and marketing-technology companies such as Cardinal Path, Accordant and Merkle. Other additions included Blue-infinity, Novus Group, M8, White Label MKT, Global Mind, Amicus Digital, B2B International, DEG and Videobeat. In 2019, the network continued adding specialist digital, creative, production and business-to-business capabilities through acquisitions including Happy Marketer, BJL, Redder Advertising, Re:production, MuteSix, Chef and DigitalPi. The portfolio was organized around numerous agency and specialist brands. Carat, iProspect and Vizeum represented major media and performance-marketing networks, while Dentsu, Isobar and mcgarrybowen provided creative, digital and communications services. Merkle contributed data-driven customer experience, CRM and technology expertise. Posterscope focused on out-of-home media, and other businesses addressed content, analytics, production, sports marketing, experiential work and public relations. This breadth reflected a broader industry shift from separate advertising disciplines toward integrated systems combining media, creative, data, technology and customer journeys. In July 2019, Dentsu announced plans to retire the Dentsu Aegis Network identity as part of its One Dentsu strategy. Wendy Clark became global CEO in April 2020. In October 2020, the organization was renamed Dentsu International and presented a simplified model centered on media, customer relationship management and creative. The change was intended to reduce complexity for clients while preserving the specialist capabilities of the network's constituent brands. After the rebrand, Dentsu International continued to invest in experience, commerce, consulting, technology and production. It acquired LiveArea in 2021, Dig Into, Pexlify, Extentia and Aware Services in 2022, and Tag in 2023. These additions broadened its ability to support digital commerce, Salesforce implementations, software development, consulting and global content production. The resulting organization remains an international marketing-services business within Dentsu Group, with operations spanning media, advertising, customer experience, data, analytics, technology and content.
