Deftones are an American rock band formed in Sacramento, California, in 1988 by vocalist and guitarist Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter, and drummer Abe Cunningham. The group developed during the Northern California heavy-music scene and became one of the most distinctive bands associated with the late-1990s and early-2000s alternative-metal movement. Although the band is often grouped with nu metal because of its period of commercial emergence, its music has consistently ranged beyond that category, incorporating alternative rock, post-hardcore, shoegaze, dream pop, art rock, and atmospheric electronic elements. Keyboardist and turntablist Frank Delgado, who had contributed to the band's sound from the late 1990s, became a full member during the White Pony era. In November 2008, Chi Cheng was severely injured in a car accident and entered a minimally conscious state. He did not return to regular performance, and Sergio Vega subsequently took over bass duties for touring and recording. Following Cheng's accident, Deftones released Diamond Eyes in 2010. The album was widely viewed as a strong renewal of the band's creative momentum, combining direct heavy songs with spacious and melodic material. Koi No Yokan followed in 2012 and continued the band's established pattern of combining metallic force with atmospheric writing. Cheng died in 2013, and the band and its supporters continued to acknowledge his role in Deftones' history. Gore was released in 2016. Its sound emphasized tension between heavy guitar work and more open, sometimes dreamlike arrangements. The band later returned with Ohms in 2020, an album that was generally presented as a return to a particularly focused and forceful version of the Deftones sound. Vega remained associated with the group until 2022, when he announced his departure. Fred Sablan subsequently became the band's touring bassist. Deftones' continuing identity is based on the interaction of its core members rather than on a corporate brand structure. The group earns recognition through albums, streaming and physical catalog sales, touring, festival performances, licensing, and merchandise. Its long-term influence comes from making heavy music that is simultaneously abrasive, melodic, spacious, and experimental. The band remains active, while its classification as a conventional corporate or consumer brand should be treated as a cataloging convenience rather than a description of its legal structure.
