DEFEND ID

DEFEND ID is the trade identity of Indonesia's state-owned defense-industry holding centered on PT Len Industri (Persero). The name is derived from “Defense Industry Indonesia” and represents the government's effort to coordinate several major national defense manufacturers under a single industrial structure. The holding combines capabilities in land systems, aerospace, naval platforms, explosives, defense electronics, transportation technology, telecommunications infrastructure, renewable energy, and navigation systems. The group's institutional roots reach back to 1965, when the Lembaga Elektroteknika Nasional, or National Electrotechnics Institute, was established under the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. Initially focused on broadcasting research, the organization gradually expanded into applied engineering. It began pioneering railway signaling in 1983 and home solar-energy systems in 1985. In 1991, it was separated from the research institute and incorporated as PT Len Industri (Persero), a state-owned company. PT Len's technology portfolio broadened substantially during the following decades. Its railway activities progressed from electromechanical interlocking installations to electronic interlocking, urban rail systems, airport people-mover infrastructure, and signaling projects across Indonesia. The company also developed and supplied broadcasting transmitters, navigation equipment, telecommunications infrastructure, solar-energy installations, weather radar, and earthquake-monitoring systems. Some of its broadcasting equipment was exported to Malaysia and Timor-Leste, while its solar projects reached remote infrastructure such as Indonesian lighthouses. The company's defense role grew alongside its civilian engineering businesses. Its activities include communications and tactical data-link systems, tactical radios, intelligence and information systems, surveillance and ground-controlled-interception radar, combat-management systems, naval electronics, drone mission systems, and integration work for missile-related equipment. One named system is Mandhala, a combat-management system intended for warships and unmanned platforms. PT Len has also worked with Thales Air Defence Limited on battery-system integration for the Starstreak very-short-range air-defense system for the Indonesian Army. On 12 January 2022, the Indonesian government formally designated PT Len Industri as the parent of the state-owned defense-industry holding. The structure brought together PT Pindad, PT Dahana, PT Dirgantara Indonesia, and PT PAL Indonesia. Within the arrangement, Pindad concentrates on land-defense platforms, Dirgantara Indonesia on airborne platforms, PAL Indonesia on naval platforms, and Dahana on defense explosives. President Joko Widodo launched the DEFEND ID identity on 20 April 2022. The holding presented an ambition to become one of the world's 50 largest defense companies by 2024. DEFEND ID therefore functions less as a single product brand than as an umbrella identity for Indonesia's strategic defense-industrial capabilities. Its businesses serve the Indonesian government, armed forces, transport authorities, telecommunications programs, infrastructure operators, and energy projects. In March 2025, the government transferred a majority stake in PT Len Industri to Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia as part of a broader effort to establish an operational holding within the Danantara structure. The group remains active, with PT Len acting as the coordinating parent and with affiliated companies retaining specialized operating roles.

DEFEND ID's history is rooted in the development of Indonesia's state-owned engineering and electronics sector. The institutional predecessor of PT Len Industri was established in 1965 as the Lembaga Elektroteknika Nasional, or National Electrotechnics Institute, under the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. Its original work centered on research and technology for broadcasting. Over time, the organization moved from research toward commercial engineering and industrial production. A major early expansion occurred in the 1980s. In 1983, LEN began pioneering railway signaling systems, establishing a technical direction that later became one of PT Len's most visible civilian businesses. In 1985, it began developing household solar-energy systems. In 1991, LEN was separated from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and reconstituted as PT Len Industri (Persero), a state-owned company. During the 2000s, PT Len demonstrated an increasing ability to deliver nationally important electronic systems. In 2001, an electromechanical interlocking system manufactured by the company entered service at Tagogapu Station in West Bandung. In 2004, the company produced navigation systems for Indonesian Navy vessels and anti-aircraft missile equipment. An electronic interlocking system was commissioned at Slawi Station in 2005. That same year, PT Len exported VHF television transmitters to Malaysia, followed by further transmitter exports to Timor-Leste in 2007. The company also applied its solar expertise to geographically dispersed infrastructure. In 2006, it installed solar panels at hundreds of lighthouses throughout Indonesia. In 2015, it built Indonesia's first 5 MWp solar power plant at Kupang in East Nusa Tenggara. From 2016 onward, its transport portfolio included signaling and systems work for the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Skytrain, the South Sumatra Light Rail Transit system, LRT Jakarta, and LRT Jabodebek. The company also developed LenSOLAR rooftop solar products and began developing defense radar technology. PT Len's business scope expanded beyond electronics into telecommunications, navigation, transportation support, renewable energy, and defense systems. Its subsidiaries have supported the Palapa Ring Middle Package broadband backbone, which connects 17 regencies in central Indonesia. Other activities include weather radar, earthquake-monitoring stations, radio and television transmitters, and railway operations and maintenance. The decisive organizational change came in January 2022, when the Indonesian government appointed PT Len Industri as the parent of a state-owned defense-industry holding. The holding brought together four major defense manufacturers: PT Pindad, PT Dahana, PT Dirgantara Indonesia, and PT PAL Indonesia. Their assigned areas were land platforms, defense explosives, airborne platforms, and naval platforms respectively. The common DEFEND ID identity was launched by President Joko Widodo on 20 April 2022, giving the group a unified public and industrial profile. PT Len introduced a new corporate logo in February 2023 to represent its parent-company role. In March 2025, a majority stake in the company was transferred to Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia as part of the Indonesian government's effort to organize state-owned companies within the Danantara structure.
