Overview
Daqing Oilfield is a major onshore petroleum-production complex in Daqing, Heilongjiang Province, in northeastern China. The field became the defining symbol of China’s effort to develop a domestic petroleum industry after large-scale exploration in the Songliao Basin identified commercially significant oil resources in the late 1950s. Development began in 1959, and the field entered production in 1960. Its name was subsequently applied not only to the geological field but also to the operating organization and associated industrial, engineering, research, refining, logistics, and community infrastructure based in Daqing. For decades, Daqing was China’s leading crude-oil producer and a central source of domestic energy supply. Its development supported the growth of a major petroleum city in what had previously been a relatively sparsely industrialized area. The field became closely associated with the Daqing petroleum model, which emphasized organizational discipline, collective effort, technical self-reliance, and high production targets. The “Iron Man” image of Wang Jinxi, an early drilling and production worker, became part of China’s state-promoted industrial culture and remains strongly connected with the Daqing brand. Daqing’s production history has involved extensive water injection, infill drilling, enhanced recovery, reservoir management, and the development of mature-field technologies. As the field aged, maintaining output became more technically difficult and economically demanding. The operating organization therefore expanded its capabilities beyond conventional primary production, including polymer flooding, fine reservoir description, improved drilling and completion methods, and other enhanced-oil-recovery techniques. These methods have been important to extending the productive life of a mature, multilayered continental petroleum system. The commercial identity most commonly associated with the operating business is Daqing Oilfield Company, a PetroChina operating company within China National Petroleum Corporation. Its activities have included exploration and development, crude-oil and natural-gas production, oilfield services, engineering, scientific research, equipment support, and related industrial operations. Daqing is primarily a domestic upstream asset rather than a consumer-facing product brand. Its crude oil contributes to China’s refining and energy system, while its technical and engineering capabilities have also supported broader petroleum operations. Daqing remains active, but its role has changed from that of China’s dominant growth field to that of a strategically important mature asset. Public descriptions of the field emphasize stable production, recovery improvement, cost control, digitalization, and the search for additional resources in the surrounding basin. It is also associated with environmental-management and energy-transition initiatives, including efforts to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency. Because production, reserves, financial performance, and executive appointments are reported through CNPC and PetroChina structures, field-level figures and governance details are not always separately disclosed.
History
Daqing Oilfield developed from exploration in the Songliao Basin during China’s early postwar petroleum-industry expansion. Geological and geophysical work in the late 1950s identified a major petroleum structure near present-day Daqing in Heilongjiang Province. The discovery in 1959 was followed by rapid development, and commercial production began in 1960. The field was initially known internationally as Taching and became one of the largest oil discoveries associated with China’s drive for petroleum self-sufficiency. The early development period required the construction of drilling, gathering, transport, processing, housing, and other infrastructure in a relatively remote northeastern region. Daqing consequently grew as both an oilfield and an integrated industrial city. Its development was presented domestically as evidence that China could mobilize labor, engineering, and scientific resources to build a modern petroleum industry despite limited access to foreign technology and capital. During the 1960s and subsequent decades, Daqing became China’s leading oil-producing base. The field’s operating culture was represented by model workers and production teams, particularly Wang Jinxi, whose nickname “Iron Man” became linked with the field’s public image. The Daqing model emphasized dedication, technical learning, collective organization, and the prioritization of national production goals. This symbolism made Daqing more than an industrial asset: it became a prominent institution in China’s official industrial and political narrative. Daqing’s geology consists of extensive, complex continental reservoirs with multiple producing layers. Maintaining output required progressively more sophisticated reservoir management. Water injection was used to support pressure and sweep oil toward producing wells, while later programs introduced infill drilling, polymer flooding, improved reservoir characterization, and other enhanced-recovery techniques. The field became an important source of Chinese expertise in managing mature oil reservoirs and in adapting recovery methods to large, heterogeneous onshore fields. The operating structure evolved alongside China’s petroleum-sector reforms. Daqing’s assets and operations became associated with China National Petroleum Corporation and, after the creation of PetroChina, with PetroChina’s upstream business. Daqing Oilfield Company has functioned as the principal operating organization for exploration, development, production, technical services, research, and related industrial activity in the Daqing area. The oilfield itself is not a separately listed company, even though PetroChina is publicly listed. As the field matured, its production profile changed. The challenge shifted from rapid expansion to maintaining stable output, improving recovery factors, controlling costs, and replacing declining reserves with new discoveries or additional recoverable resources. Daqing’s technical programs increasingly focused on fine-scale reservoir description, chemical flooding, intelligent and digital oilfield systems, drilling efficiency, and integrated management of oil and gas operations. The field has also been discussed in connection with environmental protection, emissions reduction, and the gradual diversification of a petroleum-centered regional economy. Today, Daqing Oilfield remains an active and strategically significant Chinese upstream operation. It is no longer best understood solely as a high-growth discovery asset; it is a mature, technically intensive field and an important production, engineering, research, and industrial base. Its continuing importance derives from its remaining hydrocarbons, its infrastructure, its role in domestic energy supply, and the operational knowledge accumulated through more than six decades of development.

Products and positioning
A strategically important, large-scale Chinese onshore upstream petroleum asset and mature-field technology center within the CNPC and PetroChina group.
Crude oilUpstream petroleum1960
Crude oil is Daqing Oilfield’s principal output. Production comes from a mature, multilayered onshore reservoir system and supports China’s domestic petroleum supply chain through downstream processing and refining networks. The field’s operating focus has evolved from initial development and high-volume production toward maintaining output, improving recovery, managing water cut, and extending the commercial life of existing reservoirs.
Natural gasUpstream petroleum
Natural gas is produced as part of Daqing’s broader hydrocarbon operations. Gas development and processing are connected to exploration, field infrastructure, and integrated management of the Songliao Basin petroleum system. Public information commonly presents gas as a supporting activity alongside the field’s historically dominant crude-oil business.
Enhanced-oil-recovery technologiesOilfield technology
Daqing has been closely associated with mature-field recovery technologies, including water injection, polymer flooding, infill drilling, reservoir characterization, and digitally supported production management. These capabilities are intended to improve sweep efficiency and recover additional oil from complex reservoirs after primary production has declined.
Oilfield engineering and technical servicesEnergy services
The Daqing operating organization includes or supports engineering, drilling, production, equipment, research, and field-management capabilities required to operate a large integrated oilfield. Such services support both local production and the transfer of mature-field experience within the wider CNPC and PetroChina system.
