Overview

Cadillac is the luxury vehicle division of General Motors and one of the oldest surviving automotive marques in the world. The company was established in Detroit in 1902 from the remnants of the Henry Ford Company after Henry Ford departed following disagreements with his financial backers. Engineer Henry M. Leland persuaded investors William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen to continue automobile production, using precision manufacturing methods and an engine developed by Leland's company, Leland & Faulconer. The new business was named after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French explorer associated with the founding of Detroit, and adopted a crest based on his coat of arms. Cadillac's early reputation rested on manufacturing precision, reliability, and the interchangeability of component parts. Its first vehicles, the Runabout and Tonneau, appeared in 1902 and were presented publicly at the 1903 New York Auto Show. In 1905 Cadillac merged with Leland & Faulconer to form the Cadillac Motor Company. Its engineering achievements included the first volume-produced fully enclosed automobile, a successful 1908 Royal Automobile Club interchangeability demonstration that earned the Dewar Trophy, and a second Dewar Trophy in 1912 after the introduction of electric starting and lighting. These accomplishments helped establish the slogan “Standard of the World.” General Motors purchased Cadillac in 1909 and made it the prestige division at the top of GM's brand hierarchy. Cadillac subsequently became a laboratory for major automotive technologies, including electric starting, ignition and lighting systems, V8, V16 and V12 engines, a clashless manual transmission, steel roofs, automatic climate control, advanced suspension systems, and later front-wheel drive and electronic vehicle systems. Its V8 engines in particular influenced the direction of the American automobile industry. During the interwar period Cadillac sold large, powerful luxury cars and supplied commercial chassis for limousines, ambulances, hearses and other institutional vehicles. The brand also broadened its reach through the smaller LaSalle companion marque, styling leadership under Harley Earl, and models such as the Series 60 and Sixty Special. The Great Depression severely reduced luxury-car demand, but Cadillac recovered after service executive Nick Dreystadt helped end a discriminatory sales policy that had restricted sales to African Americans. The division's sales then rose sharply during the mid-1930s. After World War II, Cadillac became closely associated with American postwar automotive styling. Harley Earl's design organization popularized tailfins, wraparound windshields, extensive chrome, and the distinctive Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville body styles. The 1950s represented a high point of visual excess and technological confidence, while the Eldorado Brougham demonstrated Cadillac's ability to produce highly equipped, low-volume luxury vehicles. The 1967 front-wheel-drive Eldorado marked a major technical and design transition. Cadillac continued to offer large luxury sedans and coupes through the 1970s, but changing fuel prices, emissions requirements, safety regulation, and competition from European manufacturers increasingly challenged the traditional American luxury formula. In later decades the brand expanded into smaller cars, sport-utility vehicles, performance-oriented V-series models, and battery-electric vehicles. Cadillac remains positioned by GM above Chevrolet, Buick and GMC in the company's portfolio. Its principal markets are the United States, Canada and China, although vehicles are distributed in additional countries. The modern portfolio includes sedans, crossovers, full-size sport-utility vehicles, performance variants and electric vehicles. Cadillac's current strategic direction emphasizes premium design, technology, electrification and global luxury competition, while retaining the brand's historical association with American scale…

History

Cadillac originated in Detroit in 1902 after the collapse of the Henry Ford Company's initial structure. Financial backers William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen asked engineer Henry M. Leland to assess the company's plant and equipment for liquidation. Leland instead argued that automobile production could continue using precision-engineered components and a proven single-cylinder engine. The Cadillac Automobile Company was incorporated on August 22, 1902, and named for Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French explorer connected with Detroit's founding. The first Cadillac automobiles were the two-seat Runabout and Tonneau, completed in October 1902. Their public showing at the 1903 New York Auto Show generated substantial orders and helped establish the brand's early reputation for careful manufacturing. Cadillac merged with Leland & Faulconer in 1905. Its commitment to component interchangeability was demonstrated in the 1908 Dewar Trophy test in Britain, making Cadillac the first American automobile manufacturer to receive that award. It won again in 1912 after incorporating electric starting and lighting into a production car. GM acquired Cadillac in 1909. Under GM ownership the division served as the corporation's premium marque and produced both passenger cars and commercial chassis. Cadillac introduced a 90-degree flathead V8 in 1915, followed by further V8 development, a V16 in 1930, and V12 models. These engines, combined with increasingly elaborate bodywork, placed Cadillac at the center of American luxury-car manufacturing. In 1926 the company brought stylist Harley Earl into its organization; Earl later led GM's Art and Color Section and exerted a lasting influence on automotive design. Cadillac also introduced the LaSalle companion marque, a smaller and less expensive model line that remained in production until 1940. The Great Depression caused Cadillac sales to fall dramatically. Nick Dreystadt, then responsible for Cadillac service and sales operations, persuaded company decision-makers to abandon a policy that discouraged sales to African Americans. Sales improved significantly afterward, and Dreystadt was promoted to lead the Cadillac Division. The company also broadened its range through the Series 60 and later Series 61, while the Sixty Special became one of its most enduring nameplates. Postwar Cadillac became an important symbol of American automotive prosperity. The division's styling incorporated tailfins, wraparound glass, chrome trim and dramatic bumpers. The Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville helped define the hardtop body style, while the Eldorado Brougham showed the brand's interest in highly equipped, hand-built luxury. Cadillac also introduced safety and convenience technologies such as automatic headlamp dimming, dual-circuit braking and automatic climate control. The 1967 Eldorado introduced front-wheel drive to Cadillac's personal-luxury range. During the late 1960s and 1970s the division reached high sales volumes with large sedans and coupes, but energy-price shocks, regulation and shifting consumer preferences began to weaken the traditional formula. Cadillac responded over time with smaller vehicles, diesel and front-wheel-drive experiments, new performance lines and sport-utility vehicles. The Escalade became a major modern expression of Cadillac luxury, while V-series models established a more explicit performance identity. In the twenty-first century Cadillac has competed in a global premium market dominated by European and Asian brands. Its range has increasingly emphasized crossovers, large SUVs, digital interfaces, advanced driver assistance and electric propulsion. The brand's electric strategy includes the Lyriq crossover and the low-volume Celestiq flagship. Cadillac continues to operate as GM's luxury division, with the United States, Canada and China as core markets.
