Bupa, originally the British United Provident Association, is a British multinational healthcare group headquartered in London. It was formed in 1947 when 17 British provident associations combined to provide private healthcare coverage to the public. The organization is structured as a private company limited by guarantee: it has no shareholders, and profits after tax are reinvested in the business rather than distributed as dividends. Bupa began as a private medical insurer offering policies to individuals, employers and other organizations. Bupa was created in 1947 through the union of 17 British provident associations. Its original purpose was to make private healthcare protection available to the general public, and its first principal activity was private medical insurance. The group has also supported refugee healthcare in Poland after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and funded community, mental-health and medical-research initiatives through foundations in several countries. The organization has periodically faced scrutiny over care standards. UK regulators and courts have criticized practices at some residential homes, while Australian aged-care operations were subject to regulatory action and public criticism over alleged neglect, infection-control failures and the charging of residents for services not delivered. Bupa has acknowledged some failings and paid penalties, including a UK fine connected with a Legionnaires' disease death.
