Overview
BNP Paribas is a French universal bank and financial-services group headquartered in Paris. The group was created in 2000 through the combination of Banque Nationale de Paris, commonly known as BNP, and Paribas, an institution with roots in French and international banking. The merger brought together BNP’s substantial retail and commercial banking franchise with Paribas’s strengths in corporate finance, capital markets and investment banking. The resulting group developed a broad model combining customer banking, corporate and institutional finance, investment and protection services, and specialized financial businesses. The group operates through three principal operating pillars. Commercial, Personal Banking & Services serves individuals, entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized businesses and corporate customers through banking networks and specialized consumer-finance, vehicle-finance and mobility businesses. Corporate & Institutional Banking provides financing, transaction banking, capital-markets, securities-services and advisory capabilities to companies, financial institutions, governments and institutional investors. Investment & Protection Services covers asset management, insurance, savings, wealth management and real-estate investment services through brands and entities including BNP Paribas Asset Management, BNP Paribas Cardif and BNP Paribas Real Estate. BNP Paribas expanded internationally through a combination of organic growth, alliances and acquisitions. Important additions included Banca Nazionale del Lavoro in Italy, Fortis Bank Belgium and Luxembourg businesses following the 2008 financial crisis, and other regional banking and financial-services operations. The group previously maintained a significant United States presence through Bank of the West and First Hawaiian Bank; First Hawaiian was separated earlier, while Bank of the West was sold to Bank of Montreal and the transaction completed in 2023. These portfolio changes reflected a strategy of concentrating capital on businesses where BNP Paribas could achieve scale and strategic differentiation. The bank is a major participant in European retail banking, global wholesale banking, asset management, insurance and sustainable finance. Its business model is diversified by geography, customer type and activity, although it remains exposed to the normal risks of a large international bank, including credit, market, operational, regulatory and geopolitical risks. BNP Paribas has also promoted responsible-investment, climate-transition and social-impact initiatives as part of its broader positioning as a bank supporting economic transformation. In 2024, BNP Paribas announced exclusive negotiations to acquire AXA Investment Managers and establish a long-term asset-management partnership with AXA. BNP Paribas Cardif completed the acquisition on 1 July 2025. The combination of AXA IM with BNP Paribas Asset Management and BNP Paribas Real Estate Investment Management was presented as a major expansion of the group’s investment platform, particularly in long-term savings, public and private assets, alternatives and institutional asset management. BNP Paribas therefore combines a traditional universal-bank franchise with a growing investment-and-protection platform and a globally distributed corporate and institutional business.
History
BNP Paribas was established in 2000 through the merger of Banque Nationale de Paris and Paribas. The combination followed a contested French banking-market episode in 1999, when BNP and Société Générale competed for control of Paribas while also pursuing competing strategic combinations. BNP’s offer for Paribas succeeded, while its attempt to combine with Société Générale did not. The new group adopted the BNP Paribas name and combined a large domestic banking network with Paribas’s international corporate, investment-banking and capital-markets expertise. During the early 2000s, the group developed a broad European and international footprint. It expanded its retail and commercial presence while investing in corporate finance, derivatives, securities services and asset management. The business was organized around the idea of a universal bank capable of serving customers across everyday banking, financing, investment and protection needs. BNP Paribas also built specialized businesses in consumer credit, equipment and vehicle finance, insurance, wealth management and real estate. The 2008 financial crisis created both pressure and opportunity. BNP Paribas remained one of the stronger large European banks during the crisis, but it became involved in the restructuring of Fortis. In 2009, BNP Paribas acquired major Fortis banking operations in Belgium and Luxembourg, significantly enlarging its Benelux franchise. The transaction also resulted in the Belgian state becoming a significant shareholder. Other acquisitions strengthened the group’s national platforms, including Banca Nazionale del Lavoro in Italy and regional operations in several other markets. The group’s international expansion was not unlimited. BNP Paribas had developed a US retail-banking presence through Bank of the West, but it agreed in 2021 to sell that business to Bank of Montreal for approximately US$16.3 billion. Regulatory approvals were obtained in January 2023 and the transaction was expected to close in February 2023. The disposal illustrated the group’s preference for reallocating capital toward businesses and regions with stronger strategic fit. The group had also previously reduced its stake and presence in other overseas banking operations, including First Hawaiian Bank. Alongside banking, BNP Paribas grew its investment and protection businesses. BNP Paribas Asset Management served retail, intermediary and institutional investors with public-market and alternative investment capabilities. BNP Paribas Cardif developed insurance, savings and protection products, while BNP Paribas Real Estate provided real-estate investment, development and advisory services. These activities became increasingly important to the group’s strategy because they provide fee income and deepen relationships with insurers, pension funds, distributors and private clients. In August 2024, BNP Paribas announced exclusive negotiations to acquire AXA Investment Managers and to establish a long-term partnership under which BNP Paribas would manage a substantial portion of AXA’s assets. BNP Paribas Cardif completed the acquisition on 1 July 2025. The enlarged platform brought together AXA IM, BNP Paribas Asset Management and BNP Paribas Real Estate Investment Management, with the stated objective of creating a leading European asset-management business covering traditional assets, private assets, alternatives, responsible investment and long-term savings. Transitional leadership appointments included Isabelle Scemama for alternatives and Rob Gambi for liquid investment strategies. Today, BNP Paribas presents itself as a diversified international bank organized around Commercial, Personal Banking & Services, Corporate & Institutional Banking, and Investment & Protection Services. Its scale gives it a significant role in European banking and global financial markets, while its principal ongoing challenges include maintaining regulatory control, managing balance-sheet and market risks, adapting to digital competition, and financing clients’ transition toward lower-carbon economic activity.
