Overview
Azure Maps is Microsoft's cloud-based suite of mapping and location services, delivered as part of the Azure platform. Azure Maps Creator extends the service to private facilities. Azure Maps Visual for Power BI connects Azure Maps capabilities with Microsoft's business-intelligence platform, enabling geographic analysis in reports and dashboards. History
Azure Maps originated as Azure Location Based Services, a Microsoft initiative previewed in 2017 to bring geographic and location-aware functions into Azure's enterprise cloud. The service was conceived in the context of Microsoft's wider IoT strategy: organizations could combine location data with cloud applications, connected devices, analytics, and operational workflows.
