Overview

Awlgrip is a decorative yacht coatings brand that has set the standard worldwide, known for outstanding quality, a flawless finish, and continuous innovation backed by AkzoNobel expertise. It began in 1973 when two Eastern Airlines pilots asked Merritt Boat and Engine Works to use Alumigrip paint, originally developed for airplanes, on their boats. The name "Awlgrip" was born from a happy accident when "Allgrip" was typed with one "L" turned into a "W." In the 1970s US Paint began manufacturing and marketing Awlgrip from St. Louis, Missouri. In 1979 focus shifted to the yacht and pleasure marine market. In the 1980s the brand expanded internationally with new products such as varnishes, antifoulings, surfacers, and fillers, becoming a truly global brand. Today, as part of AkzoNobel, Awlgrip offers a wide portfolio of colors, effects, and finishes, proven durability and gloss retention, and technical expertise and global support. Sustainability is built into every stage, from raw materials to recycling, reducing waste, cutting VOC emissions, and pioneering greener processes.

History

Awlgrip began in 1973 when two Eastern Airlines pilots asked Merritt Boat and Engine Works to use Alumigrip paint, originally developed for airplanes, on their boats. The result was stunning, but the name "Alumigrip" sounded too specific to aluminum. The name "Awlgrip" was born from a happy accident: "Allgrip" was chosen at a bar-room table in 1973, but when typed up from a scribbled napkin, one "L" turned into a "W." The name stuck. In the 1970s, US Paint began manufacturing and marketing Awlgrip from St. Louis, Missouri. In 1979, focus shifted to the yacht and pleasure marine market. In the 1980s, the brand expanded internationally with new products such as varnishes, antifoulings, surfacers, and fillers, becoming a truly global brand by the end of the decade.
