Overview
Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr was an Arabic-language live news and public-affairs television channel created by Al Jazeera Media Network for Egyptian audiences. It was related to Al Jazeera Mubasher, the network's broader live-events service, but was designed around Egypt-specific political, social and public-affairs coverage. The channel operated from Cairo from 2011 until its suspension and subsequent shutdown in the aftermath of the removal of Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Its programming emphasized live and minimally edited coverage rather than a conventional schedule of heavily packaged news bulletins. The service carried political gatherings, press conferences, discussions, meetings and other public events, while also drawing on video supplied by other organizations. During its later period, the channel's output was transmitted from Al Jazeera's Doha headquarters and used material from sources including YouTube and Reuters, as well as recorded press conferences from other Egyptian news organizations. The channel became politically contentious in Egypt. Egyptian authorities viewed its coverage as reflecting a pro-Muslim Brotherhood perspective, particularly during the political crisis following Morsi's removal. The government shut the service down, and members of its staff were arrested before later being released. The suspension reflected the broader deterioration in relations between Egyptian authorities and Al Jazeera, as well as the regional dispute surrounding Qatar's relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist movements. On December 22, 2014, Al Jazeera Media Network stated that Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr would cease broadcasting until circumstances permitted its return. The announcement followed the restoration of diplomatic ties between Qatar and Egypt during the latter part of 2014. In December 2014, the network also announced plans to combine Al Jazeera Mubasher and the temporarily suspended Egyptian service into a broader channel known as Al Jazeera Al-'Amma, or Al Jazeera Live General. Some of the Egyptian service's staff subsequently moved to Al Jazeera Arabic and Al Jazeera Mubasher. Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr has remained off the air. The related Al Jazeera Mubasher Al-'Amma service transmits on frequencies associated with both Al Jazeera Mubasher and the defunct Egyptian channel. The brand should therefore be understood as a discontinued country-focused channel rather than as a current operating division of Al Jazeera.
History
Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr was established by Al Jazeera Media Network in 2011 as an Egypt-oriented counterpart to Al Jazeera Mubasher. The parent service, launched in 2005, had developed a distinctive format based on continuous live transmission of conferences, political events, public meetings and other proceedings, often without extensive editing or commentary. The Egyptian channel applied a similar approach to events and debates connected to Egypt. The service initially operated from Cairo. Its remit covered political, social, cultural and economic affairs, with an emphasis on direct access to events rather than only reporter-led summaries. This model made the channel particularly relevant during the political upheaval that followed the 2011 Egyptian revolution. It also made the service highly exposed to disputes over editorial framing and political legitimacy. Following the removal of Mohamed Morsi in 2013, Egyptian authorities closed the channel. Authorities and critics accused it of presenting a pro-Muslim Brotherhood perspective. The shutdown formed part of a broader confrontation between Egypt and Al Jazeera. Channel personnel were arrested, although the available reference material states that they were later released. From 2013 until its suspension, the service no longer operated as a normal Cairo-based live channel. Its output was produced from Al Jazeera's Doha headquarters and relied on material obtained from external sources, including YouTube and Reuters, together with press conferences recorded by other Egyptian news organizations. This reduced the service's direct operating presence in Egypt while preserving an Egypt-focused broadcast identity. In December 2014, Al Jazeera announced that it would combine the Egyptian service with Al Jazeera Mubasher in a broader channel called Al Jazeera Al-'Amma, also rendered as Al Jazeera Live General. On December 22, the network stated that Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr would cease broadcasting until circumstances made a return possible. The decision followed a restoration of relations between Qatar and Egypt and occurred amid regional pressure on Qatar over its ties with the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups. Much of the channel's staff was subsequently absorbed into Al Jazeera Arabic and Al Jazeera Mubasher. Among the presenters associated with the service were Ayman Azzam and Ahmed Taha. Taha later faced Egyptian legal proceedings connected with his interviewing of former presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh; in May 2022, an Egyptian court reportedly sentenced him to 15 years in prison in absentia. As of March 2024, Al Jazeera Mubasher Misr remained off the air. Its frequencies are associated with the successor or consolidated Al Jazeera Mubasher Al-'Amma service, but the Egyptian brand itself is defunct.
