Overview

Airbus E-Fan was a two-seat all-electric aircraft prototype project intended to explore batteries, electric motors and distributed electric propulsion for light aviation. After public flight demonstrations in the 2010s, the project attracted attention and was also presented as a possible basis for a future trainer and small electric aircraft. Limitations in battery energy density, range and commercial viability meant that E-Fan did not become a mass-produced product as originally envisioned. Airbus later extended related technology work through larger hybrid-electric propulsion demonstrators. As a brand, E-Fan is better understood as an aviation technology demonstrator and prototype product than as an ongoing consumer brand.

History

E-Fan was an Airbus electric-aviation exploration project developed during the 2010s to test battery power, electric motors and propeller propulsion in a light aircraft. The prototype used a two-seat configuration and gained public attention through flight testing and demonstrations. Airbus later proposed developing the technology into the E-Fan 2.0, potentially positioning it as an electric flight trainer or small aircraft. However, battery weight, energy density, range and certification requirements constrained direct commercialization. Airbus subsequently did not proceed with the original mass-production path for E-Fan 2.0 and redirected electric-propulsion research toward larger hybrid-electric demonstrators, including E-Fan X. E-Fan is therefore best regarded as an early prototype and technology platform in Airbus's electric-aviation development rather than a continuing production aircraft brand.

  • 2017

Project shift to hybrid-electric propulsion research

    [1]

Airbus abandoned the original plan to commercialize the E-Fan 2.0, instead incorporating the related technology development into larger hybrid-electric propulsion demonstration efforts.

  • 2014

    E-Fan prototype public flight demonstration

    [1]

The E-Fan, as a two-seat all-electric aircraft prototype, conducted flight demonstrations, validating the feasibility of using batteries and electric propulsion systems in light aircraft.

Aviation electric propulsion technology demonstrator and light electric aircraft prototype

  • Electric aircraft prototype

    Airbus E-Fan

E-Fan was a two-seat all-electric aircraft prototype designed to test batteries, electric motors and propeller propulsion in a light aircraft. It served primarily as a technology demonstrator and flight-test platform rather than a continuously produced civil aircraft.
