Overview

ZZK Records is an independent record label based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, dedicated to electronic music that fuses traditional Latin American rhythms with contemporary club sounds. The label grew out of the Zizek Club, an underground party founded in 2006 by Grant C. Dull, Guillermo Canale and Diego Bulacio. The party's name was a playful nod to the Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek, and its early events provided a platform for producers who were blending cumbia, folk and other regional styles with hip-hop, reggaeton, dancehall and electronic beats. In 2008 ZZK Records was established as a formal independent label, and its first major release, the compilation "ZZK Sound Vol. 1: Cumbia Digital," brought international attention to the emerging electro-cumbia movement. Over the following decade, ZZK built a roster of artists who became central to the global bass and Latin electronic scenes, including La Yegros, Frikstailers, Chancha Vía Circuito, El Remolón, Tremor, Nicola Cruz, King Coya, Mati Zundel (Lagartijeando), Dat Garcia, Mitú, Uji and Luzmila Carpio. The label's output spans albums, EPs, singles and compilations, and its artists have toured extensively in Europe and the Americas. A 2013 European tour featuring La Yegros, Frikstailers, Chancha Vía Circuito and El G helped raise the label's profile in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK and Belgium. ZZK Records operates as a private independent label. Its catalog includes landmark releases such as "ZZK Sound Vol. 1: Cumbia Digital" (2008), "ZZK Sound Vol. 2" (2009), "Future Sounds of Buenos Aires" (2012), "ZZK Sound Vol. 3" (2013), "10 Years of Electrocumbia" (2016) and Nicola Cruz's "Siku" (2019). The label also hosts events and cultural encounters, such as the Encuentro ZZK in Barranquilla, Colombia, and has expanded its reach through digital platforms including Bandcamp, SoundCloud and Vimeo. In recent years ZZK Records has continued to foster new Latin American music, culture and storytelling, releasing music by artists such as Karen y Los Remedios, Montoya, Nuevos Ríos, Indus, Cruzloma, Jackie Mendoza, Son Rompe Pera and Hermetics. The label remains a key independent force in the global alternative Latin music landscape.

History

ZZK Records traces its origins to the Zizek Club, an underground party that began in Buenos Aires in 2006. The party was founded by Grant C. Dull, Guillermo Canale and Diego Bulacio, and its name was a playful reference to the Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek. The club provided a space for a new generation of producers and DJs who were experimenting with the intersection of traditional Latin American music—especially cumbia—and electronic genres such as hip-hop, reggaeton, dancehall and global bass. These parties became a focal point for the emerging electro-cumbia scene. In 2008, the collective formalized its activities by establishing ZZK Records as an independent label. Its first major release was the compilation "ZZK Sound Vol. 1: Cumbia Digital," which introduced international audiences to the electro-cumbia sound and helped define the label's identity. That same year saw releases from Fauna, Chancha Vía Circuito and El Remolón, among others. The label quickly became a hub for artists who were reimagining Latin American folk and popular music through electronic production. Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, ZZK expanded its catalog with albums, EPs and compilations from a growing roster. Key releases included "ZZK Sound Vol. 2" (2009), "Future Sounds of Buenos Aires" (2012), "ZZK Sound Vol. 3" (2013) and "10 Years of Electrocumbia" (2016). Artists such as La Yegros, Frikstailers, Chancha Vía Circuito, El Remolón, Tremor, Nicola Cruz, King Coya, Mati Zundel (Lagartijeando), Dat Garcia, Mitú and Uji became associated with the label, and their music reached audiences far beyond Argentina. A significant moment for the label's international profile came in 2013, when La Yegros, Frikstailers, Chancha Vía Circuito and El G toured Europe, performing in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK and Belgium. This tour helped solidify ZZK's reputation as a leading exporter of Latin American electronic music. In 2015, the label released "Luzmila Carpio Meets ZZK," a collaboration with the renowned Bolivian singer Luzmila Carpio, and Nicola Cruz's "Prender el Alma," which became one of the label's most acclaimed releases. Nicola Cruz's "Siku" followed in 2019. ZZK Records has also been active as an event organizer and cultural platform. It has hosted encounters such as Encuentro ZZK in Barranquilla, Colombia, and has presented showcases in cities including Los Angeles. The label continues to release music by a new generation of artists, including Karen y Los Remedios, Montoya, Nuevos Ríos, Indus, Cruzloma, Jackie Mendoza, Son Rompe Pera and Hermetics, maintaining its mission to foster Latin American music, culture and storytelling.
