Overview
Zyle Motors (자일자동차) is a South Korean commercial vehicle sales and service company headquartered in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do. It was established in 1993 as Daewoo Motor Sales Corporation (대우자동차판매주식회사), spun off from Daewoo Motors' sales division. Over the decades, the company underwent several name changes and restructurings, becoming Zyle Daewoo Bus Sales in 2015, Zyle Motors Sales in 2018, and finally Zyle Motors Corporation in August 2021. Since January 2012, it has been part of the Youngan Group (영안모자그룹). Zyle Motors focuses on the sale, distribution, and after-sales service of commercial vehicles. Its product lineup includes buses of various sizes—small (Lesta), medium (BH090, BS090), and large (FX120, FX116, BX212M)—as well as electric buses and trucks. The company also sells Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans through a partnership with Daimler Truck Korea, and offers the Danigo electric truck and Ebion electric bus. In addition to vehicle sales, Zyle Motors operates maintenance and repair networks, a rental car business, and overseas operations. Following the closure of Zyle Daewoo Bus, Zyle Motors acquired its overseas subsidiaries and intellectual property, taking over bus manufacturing operations abroad, particularly in Vietnam. This move has been controversial, as it involved the dismissal of most Zyle Daewoo Bus employees and was ruled an unfair labor practice by the National Labor Relations Commission. Today, Zyle Motors continues to operate as a comprehensive automotive sales and service company, with a focus on commercial vehicles and expanding its electric vehicle offerings.
History
Zyle Motors traces its origins to 1993, when Daewoo Group separated the sales division of Daewoo Motors to establish Daewoo Motor Sales Corporation (대우자동차판매주식회사). In 1994, the company changed its name to Woori Motor Sales, and in 1996, it acquired Handok Inc., a watch manufacturer, and listed its shares on the stock exchange. The company expanded into construction and other businesses, but the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the bankruptcy of its parent Daewoo Motors caused severe difficulties. After the sales consignments for SsangYong Motor, GM Korea, and Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle ended, the company focused solely on bus sales through Zyle Daewoo Bus. Following a workout program, the company was split into three entities: the Songdo development business remained as the surviving corporation, the construction business became Daewoo Industrial Development, and the bus sales division was acquired by the Youngan Group, which had taken over Zyle Daewoo Bus. Because only the bus sales portion was acquired, employees in passenger car and truck sales were not transferred, sparking controversy. In December 2011, Daewoo Motor Sales was split into three companies, and the new bus sales entity was established. In January 2012, it became part of the Youngan Group. In May 2015, the company was renamed Zyle Daewoo Bus Sales Co., Ltd., and in July 2018, it became Zyle Motors Sales Co., Ltd. In July 2020, it acquired a portion of shares in Gyerim Corporation, and in February 2021, it acquired the remaining shares and shares of seven other corporations, including a Vietnamese entity. In August 2021, the company changed its name to Zyle Motors Corporation. After Zyle Daewoo Bus ceased operations, Zyle Motors acquired its overseas subsidiaries and intellectual property, taking over bus manufacturing plants abroad, particularly in Vietnam. This led to the relocation of production from the Ulsan plant to Vietnam. The closure of Zyle Daewoo Bus and the subsequent restructuring were criticized as unfair labor practices, and the National Labor Relations Commission ruled that Zyle Motors must inherit the employment of Zyle Daewoo Bus Ulsan plant workers. Today, Zyle Motors operates as a comprehensive automotive sales and service company, with a focus on commercial vehicles and expanding into electric vehicles.
