Overview

Zvjazda (Belarusian: Звязда; Russian: Звязда) is a Belarusian state publishing and media institution, formally established as the Publishing House "Zvjazda" (Издательский дом «Звязда» / Выдавецкі дом «Звязда») in November 2012. It is described as the largest Belarusian editorial and publishing institution and as the first media holding created in the Republic of Belarus. Its founder is the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Belarus, which remains its owner and parent body. The institution grew out of the newspaper Zvjazda, a Belarusian state socio-political republican newspaper in the Belarusian language. The first issue of that newspaper appeared on 9 August 1917 in Minsk, initially in Russian, and it later became a fully Belarusian-language publication in 1927. The newspaper's long history — including underground publication in occupied Minsk during the Second World War and official restoration after the liberation of Minsk in 1944 — underpins the brand identity of the publishing house. The 2012 reorganization merged the editorial office of the newspaper Zvjazda with the editorial and publishing institution "Litaratura i Mastactva", which brought literary, artistic and socio-political journals such as Polymia, Maladosts (with Biarozka), Nioman, Vozhyk and the newspaper Litaratura i Mastactva into the new holding. Since 1 November 2012 the publishing house has operated under its current structure. As a publisher, Zvjazda focuses on fiction, local-history and regional studies, biographical works, educational literature, and books for children and teenagers. It issues roughly one hundred books a year in Belarusian and Russian. Its output has been recognized at national and Commonwealth-level book competitions, including the "Art of the Book" national contest and the CIS "Stars of the Commonwealth" interstate prize. The publishing house also operates the news portal zviazda.by, which publishes current affairs, culture, regional and historical content in Belarusian. Zvjazda occupies a dual role: it is both a state media outlet carrying official news and a literary publisher preserving Belarusian-language books and periodicals. Its positioning is closely tied to Belarusian statehood, national culture and the Belarusian language, and it remains an active institution in Minsk.

History

The Zvjazda brand has two intertwined histories: that of the newspaper Zvjazda and that of the publishing house that now carries the name. The newspaper Zvjazda was founded in 1917. Its first issue appeared on 9 August 1917 in Minsk, published in Russian. In 1917 some issues came out under the titles "Molot" and "Burevestnik", and the paper served as the printed organ of the Minsk Committee of the RSDLP(b). In 1920 it became the printed organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Belarus. In 1925 part of its material began to appear in Belarusian, and in 1927 the newspaper became fully Belarusian-language. During the Second World War the newspaper was published in Minsk at the start of the war, then in Mogilev and Gomel. From May to September 1942 it appeared illegally in occupied Minsk as the organ of the Minsk underground city committee of the CP(b)B; at least four issues were produced in this period. The first issue, dated 18 May 1942 (reprinted in June 1942), was typeset in the German printing house Dom pechati and printed in a conspiratorial apartment in a run of 2,500 copies. It was edited by U. S. Amelianyuk, one of the organizers and leaders of the Minsk underground, who was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. At the end of 1942 the Central Committee of the CP(b)B decided to resume regular publication in occupied territory: from 27 January 1943 the newspaper was issued in the Aktsyabrsko-Lyubanskaya partisan zone as the organ of the Central Committee of the CP(b)B and the Minsk underground regional committee. On 10 July 1944, after the liberation of Minsk, publication was officially restored in the capital. The newspaper received the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st class (1965) and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1967). It was also awarded an Honorary Diploma of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus (2002). In 2005, on the initiative of the capital's public and veterans, one of the avenues in the South-West microdistrict of Minsk was named after the newspaper Zvjazda. The modern publishing house was created in November 2012 by merging the editorial office of the newspaper Zvjazda with the editorial and publishing institution "Litaratura i Mastactva", which included the literary, artistic and socio-political journals Polymia, Maladosts (with the supplement Biarozka), Nioman and Vozhyk, as well as the newspaper Litaratura i Mastactva. The new institution, the Publishing House "Zvjazda", began work on 1 November 2012. It is founded by the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Belarus and is described as the largest Belarusian editorial and publishing institution and the first media holding created in the Republic of Belarus. The publishing house's book profile covers fiction, local-history and regional studies, biographical and educational literature, and books for children and teenagers, with about one hundred books a year in Belarusian and Russian. Its achievements have been recognized in the book world: on 4 February 2014, at the 53rd national "Art of the Book" competition, the twelve-book series "Sazvuchcha siardtsau" ("Sodruzhestvo") won the special nomination "Sadruzhnasts". Several of its books were also named best "ART-books" for fine-art publishing. In April 2014 the leadership of the publishing house — editor-in-chief A. Karliukevich and first deputy director A. Badak — became laureates of the interstate prize "Stars of the Commonwealth", awarded by the CIS Council on Interstate Prizes for achievements in humanitarian activity. On 10 July 2017 the publishing house received an Honorary Diploma of the Government of the Russian Federation for its contribution to preserving the Russian language and culture and to consolidating compatriots abroad. Today the institution continues to operate as a state publishing and media organization based in Minsk, maintaining the newspaper, the book programme and the news portal zviazda.by.
