History
The firm Zumstein was founded in 1905 by Ernst Zumstein. Under his leadership it developed within a few years into the most significant philatelic company in Switzerland; it was not only a leader in the stamp field, but Ernst Zumstein consolidated the house's reputation by publishing a trade journal and the first two editions of the Zumstein handbook on the stamps of Switzerland, which subsequently became the basis for Swiss philately. Ernst Zumstein died in 1918. After a difficult transition period in the early post-war years, Arthur Hertsch took over the management of the firm, and in 1964 his son Max Hertsch succeeded him. Since 1983 Christoph Hertsch, the 4th generation, has been active in the firm after completing his training. A new edition of the Zumstein Europa catalogue appeared, along with the great revision of the Zumstein Handbook 1924 and the further expansion of the Berner Briefmarken-Zeitung. The expansion of the Zumstein new-issue service, the approval service, and the organisation of the extensive stock were further steps in the firm's over-hundred-year history.
