Overview

Zrínyi Kiadó is a Hungarian book publisher specialising in military history, military science, security and defence policy, and military technology. It was founded in 1951 as the Honvéd Kiadó Intézet (Honvéd Publishing Institute) and has operated under the Hungarian Ministry of Defence for most of its existence. Over the decades it changed names several times — Katonai Kiadó between 1955 and 1957, then Zrínyi Katonai Kiadó — before settling into its current identity as Zrínyi Kiadó within the HM Zrínyi Nonprofit Kft. group. The publisher's original mission was to support training, political education and enlightenment work within the army. From the 1960s onward, alongside publishing the works of Hungarian military authors, it began issuing series, handbooks, dictionaries, lexicons and military-themed literary works. Today it describes itself as the country's only military history and military science book publisher and a market leader in that niche, offering a broad catalogue of military-themed publications. Zrínyi Kiadó's output spans genres including handbooks, source publications, bibliographies, monographs, novels, short stories, poetry and popular-science works. Thematically it covers military science and popular science, literary reportage and documentary collections, memoirs, agitation and propaganda material, military history and tactics, military leadership and the art of war, and military technology. It also publishes periodicals such as Honvédségi Szemle, Hadtörténeti Közlemények and Hadtechnikai Szemle, and runs well-known series including Nagy csaták (Great Battles), Hősgaléria (Hall of Heroes), Titkos dosszié (Secret Dossier) and Biztonság a XXI. században (Security in the 21st Century). As part of HM Zrínyi Nonprofit Kft., the publisher sits alongside other defence-related activities including geoinformation and air capability development, printing and reproduction, communication (with the Military Film Studio and the honvedelem.hu portal), event organisation at the Bálna Budapest venue, and education and training. The parent company employs around 350 specialists and holds NATO qualification and ISO certification. Zrínyi Kiadó's latest publications and the Honvédelem Magazine are accessible through the Ministry of Defence website.

History

Zrínyi Kiadó was established in 1951 under the name Honvéd Kiadó Intézet (Honvéd Publishing Institute). Its original task was to support training, political and enlightenment work within the army through its publications. Over the years it changed names several times: from 1955 to 1957 it was called Katonai Kiadó, and afterwards it became Zrínyi Katonai Kiadó. The publisher's activity grew step by step. Its fundamental aim was to disseminate the results, works and combat experiences of socialist military science. From the 1960s, in addition to publishing the works of Hungarian military authors, it began to issue series, handbooks, dictionaries, lexicons and military-related literary works. The publisher continues to operate under the Ministry of Defence, now as HM Zrínyi Kht.–Zrínyi Kiadó, described as a demanding workshop of Hungarian book publishing. It offers works on military science, military history, security and military policy, and military technology, including the latest volumes of the successful Nagy csaták and Hősgaléria series, military technology specialist books and representative photo albums. The latest publications of Zrínyi Kiadó and the Honvédelem Magazine are accessible through the Ministry of Defence website. Over the decades the publisher has been led by a series of directors, including Bedő László (1971), Bolgár Imre (until 1980), Szabó Egon (1981), Vágó Sándorné (1982–1986), Benkő István (1987–1989), Grasselly István (1989–1990), Fejér Dénes (1991–1994), Eszes Máté (1995–1999), Keszte Gábor (2000–2004), Dávid Ferenc (2005), Farkas Tamás (2006–2008) and György Géza (2009–2010). Today Zrínyi Kiadó is part of HM Zrínyi Nonprofit Kft., a company under the direction of the Ministry of Defence that serves the cause of national defence across several sectors with the dedicated work of around 350 specialists. The parent company holds NATO qualification and ISO certification and offers unique capabilities in Hungary. Its divisions include geoinformation and air capability development, printing and reproduction, communication (with the Military Film Studio and the honvedelem.hu portal), event organisation at the Bálna Budapest venue, and education and training. Within this structure, Zrínyi Kiadó, now 70 years old, is described as the country's only military history and military science book publisher, holding a market-leading position with a broad, military-themed publication offering.
