Overview
Zivilingenieure Thürriedl & Mayr Ges.b.R. is an Austrian engineering consultancy operating under the brand Wasser & Land Ziviltechnik. The firm traces its origins to 1979, when Dipl.-Ing. Werner Lohberger founded a civil engineering office for cultural engineering (Kulturtechnik) and water management in Linz, Upper Austria. Over the following decades the practice grew through the admission of new partners and the opening of additional offices, and today it advises public authorities, municipalities and private clients on all aspects of the water cycle — from groundwater and drinking-water protection through wastewater disposal and flood protection to raw-material extraction and waste management. The consultancy's service portfolio covers the full project lifecycle: project preparation and coordination, design and permitting under the Austrian LM.VM performance-phase model, tendering and award procedures, local construction supervision, and environmental impact assessment (UVE) coordination. Its engineers also work in procurement law, helping public contracting authorities run legally sound tender processes. Typical assignments include water-supply and sewerage master plans, flood-risk and torrent-control studies, renaturation concepts, and studies for gravel pits and landfills. The firm is organised as a Ziviltechnikergesellschaft bürgerlichen Rechts (Ges.b.R.), a civil-law partnership of state-certified chartered engineering consultants (Ziviltechniker), a legal form common among Austrian engineering offices. Its main office is in Linz, with a second location in Freistadt in the northern Mühlviertel region and a third in Grieskirchen. The brand name Wasser & Land Ziviltechnik reflects the practice's focus on water and land — the two resources at the centre of cultural engineering. Because it is a privately held partnership rather than a listed company, detailed financial figures are not publicly reported. The firm positions itself as a regional specialist with deep local knowledge of Upper Austrian water bodies, municipal infrastructure and regulatory procedures, serving clients that range from individual municipalities to provincial authorities and industrial operators.
History
The practice was founded in 1979 by Dipl.-Ing. Werner Lohberger as a Zivilingenieurbüro für Kulturtechnik und Wasserwirtschaft (civil engineering office for cultural engineering and water management) with premises on Südtirolerstraße in Linz, Upper Austria. Demand grew quickly: within about eighteen months the office needed more staff and moved to Scharitzerstraße, and in 1982 it relocated to Unionstraße 47, which remains the main office in Linz. A decisive step came on 1 January 1992, when the civil-law partnership Lohberger & Thürriedl was formed and a second office was opened in Freistadt, the home town of Dipl.-Ing. Klaus Thürriedl. This gave the firm a presence in the northern Mühlviertel, an area previously not covered by any water-management planning office, and the branch established itself well. In summer 1997 the Freistadt office, by then grown to five employees, moved from Schmiedgasse to Böhmergasse, into a listed townhouse belonging to the Thürriedl family. A further generational step followed in 2003: the partners Lohberger and Thürriedl invited long-serving employee Dipl.-Ing. Norbert Mayr to join the civil-law partnership, and with effect from 1 January 2003 the firm became Lohberger – Thürriedl – Mayr, with a third office opened at Stadtplatz 6 in Grieskirchen, Mayr's home town. At the end of 2008 Werner Lohberger retired from operational management on reaching his 65th birthday, remaining for a further five years as a consultant to clients and as an internal adviser. The firm continued under the Thürriedl & Mayr name and today operates under the brand Wasser & Land Ziviltechnik, with its service range spanning the entire water cycle as well as raw-material extraction, waste management and public procurement.
