Perforce Zend is the PHP-focused software brand formerly operated by Zend Technologies. Its roots are closely tied to the development of modern PHP: founders Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski rewrote the PHP-FI parser in 1997, contributing to PHP 3, and subsequently created the Zend Engine, which became the foundation of PHP 4. Zend's origins lie in the work of Israeli software developers Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski, who became important contributors to the evolution of PHP. In 1997, the pair rewrote the parser used by PHP-FI, the early PHP implementation associated with Rasmus Lerdorf. Their work contributed to PHP 3. They later redesigned the parser and created the Zend Engine, named from a combination of their first names. The first Zend Engine release formed the basis of PHP 4. The commercial company Zend Technologies was established in 1999. Its initial financing came from Israeli venture capital investors, and business executive Doron Gerstel was recruited to lead the company as chief executive. In August 2006, Zend reported a $20 million Series D financing round. In February 2009, co-founder Andi Gutmans succeeded Doron Gerstel as chief executive. Mark Burton, formerly associated with worldwide sales at MySQL, joined the company as executive chairman. Gutmans later left Zend in February 2016, following the company's acquisition by Rogue Wave Software. Rogue Wave acquired Zend in October 2015. In January 2019, Perforce Software acquired Rogue Wave, making Zend part of Perforce's application development and enterprise software portfolio. During the 2019 transition, Zend Framework was transferred to the Linux Foundation and renamed Laminas. Apigility and related framework tooling were also moved into the Laminas ecosystem, with Apigility becoming Laminas API Tools. This governance change separated major open-source projects historically associated with Zend from the commercial Zend brand. Today, Perforce Zend represents Perforce's PHP-centered commercial offering.
