Overview

Zellstoff Pöls AG, operating under the brand heinzelpöls, is an Austrian manufacturer of bleached and unbleached long-fibre sulphate pulp and kraft paper. Based in Pöls in the state of Styria, the company is a member of the international Heinzel Group and ranks among the leading producers of these products in Central and Eastern Europe. Its integrated mill produces approximately 480,000 tonnes of ORION pulp and 340,000 tonnes of STARKRAFT kraft paper annually, serving customers in the graphic paper, hygiene, packaging, and specialty paper industries. The site also generates bioenergy in the form of electricity and district heating that is fed into the public grid. The company traces its origins to around 1700 and has undergone numerous modernizations, including a switch from sulphite to sulphate technology in 1984 and major investments in recent decades. It positions itself as an international market and technology leader with a strong focus on sustainability, quality, and resource efficiency.

History

The origins of the site in Pöls, Styria, date back to around 1700. Over the centuries, the facility has been repeatedly transformed to meet technical, economic, and ecological demands. In 1921, the Italian company Luigi Burgo & Sohn took over the plant in Pöls and began modernizing pulp production. Production of bleached pulp started in 1961. In 1984, a major investment of 182 million euros enabled the switch from sulphite to sulphate technology. In 1989, the Frantschach AG acquired the company and invested 145 million euros in a biological wastewater treatment plant, a new boiler, and a bleach plant. The 1990s saw further upgrades: a biological wastewater treatment plant started in 1991, ECF bleaching in 1995, and a second recovery boiler in 1998. In 2000, the Heinzel Group took over the company. The 2000s brought continuous expansion: a new rotary kiln in 2006, a container tipping facility in 2007, a chip impregnation tower in 2008, and a 110 kV substation in 2009. In 2010, construction began on a new steam turbine (DT4), which was commissioned in 2011 along with a tall oil plant and district heating connection. In 2013, paper machine 2 was commissioned. In 2014, the company won the Austrian Climate Protection Prize. In 2019, the new PM3 paper machine went into operation after a 17-month construction period and an investment of 130 million euros, adding 100,000 tonnes of kraft paper capacity and raising total paper capacity to 200,000 tonnes per year, making Heinzel Pöls one of the world's leading producers of white kraft paper. Today, heinzelpöls is considered one of the most modern production sites in the world from both a technical and environmental perspective.
