Overview

The Zeitschrift für Medien- und Kulturforschung (ZMK) was a German academic journal in the field of media studies, published twice a year by the Felix Meiner Verlag. It was edited at the Internationales Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM) in Weimar by Lorenz Engell and Bernhard Siegert, with editorial management by Harun Maye and Leander Scholz. The journal aimed to foster interdisciplinary discussion of a theory of cultural techniques and media-philosophical problems. It assumed that the evolution of media-cultural contexts can only be adequately understood if the role of artefacts, apparatuses, and dispositifs in cultural achievements and their reflection is taken into account. The focus of its articles was therefore on the analysis of the interrelations of actions, knowledge, and works in ensembles of human and non-human agents. In this way, the journal also provided an international forum for cultural-scientific media research, which had by then become established as a discipline. The ZMK was founded in 2009 and ceased publication in spring 2020 when the IKKM's project period ended. Long-term archiving of the journal is ensured at the State and University Library Hamburg. Each issue had a thematic focus, ranging from Angst (2009) to Schalten und Walten (2020).
