Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
ZEGNA is an Italian luxury menswear brand and the principal fashion label of the Ermenegildo Zegna Group. Its origins lie in the wool mill founded in 1910 by Ermenegildo Zegna and his family in Trivero, in Italy’s Biella province. The business initially concentrated on producing refined wool fabrics, developing a reputation among tailors for consistent quality, technical knowledge, and careful material selection. This textile foundation remains central to the brand’s identity, even though ZEGNA now operates across ready-to-wear clothing, made-to-measure and bespoke tailoring, footwear, leather goods, accessories, eyewear, and fragrances. The company expanded beyond fabric manufacturing during the second generation of family leadership. In the 1970s it introduced the Su Misura made-to-measure service and began presenting complete menswear collections. International retail development followed, including entry into Japan, a boutique in Paris, a Milan flagship, and an early presence in China. This progression changed Zegna from a supplier of luxury cloth into a vertically integrated fashion house with direct relationships with consumers. The brand has continued to emphasize control over materials, manufacturing, distribution, and customer service. ZEGNA’s identity combines Italian tailoring with relaxed, contemporary luxury. Its collections commonly include suits, jackets, knitwear, shirts, trousers, outerwear, shoes, bags, small leather goods, eyewear, and fragrances. Signature products such as the Triple Stitch sneaker illustrate the brand’s effort to connect formal tailoring heritage with more informal wardrobes. The Su Misura and Bespoke Atelier services extend the same proposition into personalization and high-touch craftsmanship. Environmental stewardship and local development are also important parts of the brand’s history. Ermenegildo Zegna supported reforestation and infrastructure projects around Trivero from the early twentieth century. These efforts eventually developed into Oasi Zegna, a large natural and cultural area associated with the family and brand. More recent initiatives, including Oasi Cashmere, Oasi Linen, fiber-traceability work, and the #UseTheExisting recycling project, have used the Oasi concept to communicate material responsibility and long-term stewardship. In 2021, the fashion business adopted the shorter ZEGNA name and consolidated major product lines under one brand architecture. The change distinguished the consumer brand more clearly from the Ermenegildo Zegna Group and accompanied the group’s public listing plans. ZEGNA has subsequently combined digital personalization, experiential retail, sports and cultural partnerships, and collaborations with designers and specialist brands. Its international profile has been supported by campaigns featuring actors, artists, athletes, and other public figures, while its present positioning remains focused on premium men’s clothing, exceptional fabrics, and a more fluid interpretation of luxury.
History
ZEGNA began in 1910 when Ermenegildo Zegna and his family established a wool mill in Trivero, in the Biella area of northern Italy. The original enterprise, Zegna & Giardino, concentrated on fine fabrics rather than finished fashion. This specialization gave the business a technical foundation that later distinguished the brand from clothing houses that relied primarily on design or retail. Zegna also developed a social and environmental connection with its home territory. Reforestation began in 1929, and the family later supported the construction of a scenic road linking Trivero with the Cervo Valley. These projects helped shape the landscape that eventually became Oasi Zegna. International commercial development started before the Second World War. In 1938, Ermenegildo Zegna traveled to New York to build relationships with Italian-American tailors and established Zegna Woollens Corporation, the company’s first international distribution branch. A first logo was registered in 1939, and a Trivero boutique sold fabrics to both wholesale and retail customers. During the 1940s, Ermenegildo’s sons Aldo and Angelo entered the business. They assumed operational leadership in 1966 and shifted the company beyond cloth production toward finished garments and a complete menswear proposition. The second generation introduced industry and market-building initiatives alongside fashion expansion. The Ermenegildo Zegna Wool Trophy began in Australia in 1963 to encourage improvements in wool quality, followed by a Mohair Trophy in South Africa in 1970. In 1972, Zegna created Su Misura, its made-to-measure service. The brand presented a collection at Pitti Uomo in 1975, entered Japan the following year, and opened its first monobrand boutique in Paris in 1980. A Milan boutique followed in 1985. In 1991, Zegna became one of the earliest luxury menswear brands to establish a retail presence in China, opening in Beijing. Oasi Zegna was formally established in 1993 as a nature reserve and cultural project covering roughly 100 square kilometers. It gave institutional form to the family’s earlier reforestation and community work. The late 1990s and early 2000s brought third-generation leadership from Gildo and Paolo Zegna, together with continued product diversification. Zegna Sport launched in 1999 with technical materials and performance-oriented clothing. Z Zegna was introduced for a more fashion-conscious customer, with Alessandro Sartori appointed its creative director in 2003. Z Zegna showed in New York in 2007, the group moved its headquarters to Via Savona in Milan, and a major global store opened on Via Monte Napoleone. The brand continued to refresh its creative direction and product range. Sartori left Z Zegna and Paul Surridge later succeeded him; Stefano Pilati led Ermenegildo Zegna Couture from 2013 to 2016. Zegna introduced the Triple Stitch sneaker in 2014 and entered an eyewear partnership with Marcolin. Sartori returned in 2016 as artistic director, overseeing the brand’s creative activities. A Milan Bespoke Atelier opened in 2017. For Fall/Winter 2019, #UseTheExisting addressed waste reduction through reuse and recycling of fibers and fabrics and later received recognition in the ADI Design Index. In 2021, the consumer label adopted the shorter ZEGNA name, while EZ, Couture, and Z ZEGNA product lines were consolidated under one brand. The change accompanied the Ermenegildo Zegna Group’s New York listing plans. Since then, ZEGNA has combined tailoring with digital personalization, material traceability, Oasi Cashmere, Oasi Linen, experiential Villa Zegna spaces, sports partnerships, and cultural collaborations. The brand has worked with figures and organizations including Real Madrid, Art Basel, Jerry Lorenzo, Leica, The Elder Statesman, Norda, and Give Back Beauty. Its campaigns have explored modern masculinity, mobility, craft, and environmental responsibility. The 2026 governance transition placed Gildo Zegna in the group’s executive chairmanship and Edoardo and Angelo Zegna as ZEGNA co-CEOs.
