Overview

Zeekr Technology Europe AB is an automotive research, engineering and technology-development organization headquartered at the Geely Innovation Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was established in 2013 as China Euro Vehicle Technology AB, commonly known as CEVT, after Geely's acquisition of Volvo Cars created a need for a European engineering capability that could support smaller vehicles and new vehicle architectures. The organization was built in the same city as Volvo Cars and drew heavily on engineering expertise associated with Sweden's automotive industry, including personnel with backgrounds at the former Saab Automobile. The company's initial strategic assignment was to help develop the Compact Modular Architecture, or CMA, for smaller Volvo vehicles and for Geely's emerging Lynk & Co brand. Its work expanded beyond platform engineering: for Lynk & Co, CEVT contributed to the development of complete vehicles, including vehicle bodies and interiors. The first Lynk & Co model developed through this work was presented in 2016, followed by the Volvo XC40 in 2017, which used the CMA architecture. This work established CEVT as an important European engineering contributor within the Geely group rather than only a local support office. CEVT later became involved in the development of the Sustainable Experience Architecture, or SEA, Geely's modular electric-vehicle platform. SEA-based vehicles have included models associated with Zeekr, Polestar, Volvo Cars and other brands connected with the wider Geely ecosystem. The architecture was designed to support different vehicle sizes, body styles, powertrains and software configurations, allowing multiple marques to share core technology while maintaining distinct products and identities. The centre has also worked on vehicle electrification, autonomous-driving systems, mobility technology, software, components and transmission engineering. Its external development work has included a platform for Waymo's autonomous taxi program. The organization has supported a broad portfolio of Geely-owned or Geely-associated brands, including Volvo Cars, Geely Auto, Lynk & Co, Polestar, Lotus, LEVC, Zeekr and Proton. Its work has therefore ranged from early vehicle concepts and platform engineering to production-oriented systems and shared technical solutions. In 2019, it presented a modular automatic seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as one example of its component and powertrain development activity. CEVT began describing itself during the period before 2023 as Zeekr's European research and development centre, while continuing to emphasize its role across the wider Geely family. On 4 September 2023, Giovanni Lanfranchi became chief executive officer. In March 2024, the company adopted the name Zeekr Technology Europe AB, a change that reflected Zeekr's growing role in its identity and its contribution to Zeekr's international product and technology expansion. The rebranding did not eliminate its broader engineering relationships within the Geely group. The centre operates from Uni3, a building of approximately 100,000 square metres in Gothenburg's Lindholmen district. In 2024, it was reported to have more than 1,000 full-time employees and annual revenue of approximately SEK 4 billion. These figures describe the scale of the engineering organization at that time; they should not be interpreted as Zeekr vehicle sales or as the financial results of Zeekr itself. Zeekr Technology Europe's present role is best understood as a European technology and product-development hub serving Zeekr and multiple other automotive brands, with capabilities spanning platforms, complete-vehicle development, electric mobility, software, autonomous driving and vehicle components.

History

Zeekr Technology Europe originated in Geely's effort to establish a European engineering capability after the acquisition of Volvo Cars. Volvo had inherited platform technology and development relationships from Ford, while its future product plans required a modern architecture for smaller vehicles. Mats Fägerhag, previously an engineering manager at Saab Automobile, was brought in to identify a suitable development partner. Rather than acquire an existing research centre, Geely and its partners established China Euro Vehicle Technology AB in Gothenburg in 2013. CEVT's location was strategically significant. Gothenburg was Volvo Cars' home city and offered access to a substantial automotive engineering workforce, including engineers with experience at Saab. The company's first central assignment was the development of the Compact Modular Architecture for smaller Volvo models and for Lynk & Co. For Volvo, CEVT primarily developed the underlying platform. For Lynk & Co, its contribution extended to broader vehicle engineering, including the body and interior. The first Lynk & Co vehicle associated with the work was shown in 2016, and the Volvo XC40 followed in 2017 using the CMA platform. The centre's responsibilities grew as Geely expanded its portfolio of automotive brands and moved toward electric vehicles. CEVT contributed to the Sustainable Experience Architecture, a modular battery-electric platform intended for use across several brands and vehicle types. SEA-related vehicles have included the Zeekr 001, Polestar 4, Volvo EX30, Smart #1 and Smart #3. The shared architecture enabled Geely's brands to reuse core technology while differentiating products through design, software, tuning, packaging and brand-specific customer experiences. Beyond vehicle platforms, CEVT developed common technologies for autonomous driving, electrification, software, mobility services and vehicle components. Its activities were not limited to internal Geely programs: the organization also developed a platform for Waymo's autonomous taxis. In powertrain engineering, it presented a modular automatic seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in 2019. These projects positioned the company as a multidisciplinary engineering organization rather than a conventional styling studio or regional adaptation office. During the early 2020s, CEVT increasingly described itself as the European research and development centre for Zeekr. It nevertheless continued to identify its work with a broader group of marques, including Geely Auto, Volvo Cars, Lynk & Co, Polestar, Lotus, LEVC and Proton. Giovanni Lanfranchi became chief executive on 4 September 2023. In March 2024, the company was renamed Zeekr Technology Europe AB. The new name signaled Zeekr's increasing importance to the organization and its role in Zeekr's global product development, while the centre retained its wider Geely-group remit. The company is based at the Geely Innovation Centre in Uni3, a building of approximately 100,000 square metres in Gothenburg's Lindholmen district. By 2024, it had more than 1,000 full-time employees and reported annual revenue of approximately SEK 4 billion. Its history reflects the evolution of Geely's automotive strategy: from adapting existing passenger-car platforms, to creating complete vehicles for new brands, and then to developing scalable electric, software and autonomous-driving technologies for an international group of automotive businesses.
