Overview

Zavetišče v Gozdu is a mountain hut (planinski dom) in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps of Slovenia, operated by the Križe Mountaineering Society (Planinsko društvo Križe). It sits at an elevation of 891 metres on the western edge of the village of Gozd, on a terrace on the southern slope of Kriška gora, along the local road from Križe. The hut is a well-known stopping point for hikers and excursionists exploring the Kriška gora massif and the wider Kamnik–Savinja Alps. The current building was begun by PD Križe in 1974 and opened in 1979, replacing earlier shelters on the site that date back to 1937. A supplementary building with sanitary facilities, an outdoor serving area and a meeting room for the society was added in 1988, and in December 1993 the sanitary facilities were modernised with hot water and a shower. The hut also serves as the lower station of a cargo cableway to Kriška gora. Facilities include a dining room with 35 seats and a bar counter, a terrace with 50 seats, and three rooms with 11 beds (the official page lists 9 beds in two rooms, reflecting periodic reconfiguration). There is a fireplace, running water, electricity, telephone, a dance floor, a children's carousel, swings, a bocce court and an air-rifle shooting range. The hut is open on weekend afternoons in July and daily in August and September. It is managed by Igor Berlot and Tina Žalec. As a mountain hut rather than a commercial company, Zavetišče v Gozdu functions as a hospitality and recreation brand within Slovenia's extensive network of alpine shelters maintained by local mountaineering societies. Its identity is tied to the village of Gozd, the Kriška gora ridge and the traditional Slovenian planinski dom experience.

History

The first shelter in the area of Gozd was opened on 1 May 1937 at the Zaplotnik farm, known locally as Princ. After the Second World War, a new shelter was established in 1949 at Podvogar. In 1974 the Križe Mountaineering Society (PD Križe) began construction of the present hut building, which was opened in 1979. In 1988 a supplementary building was added, housing sanitary facilities, an outdoor serving area and a meeting room for PD Križe. In December 1993 the sanitary facilities were upgraded with more comfortable toilets, a washroom with hot water and a shower. The hut also serves as the lower station of a cargo cableway to Kriška gora. Over the decades the hut has been maintained and adapted by PD Križe, and it remains an active mountain shelter in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.
