Overview
Zadar snova (literally "Zadar of Dreams") is a Croatian independent culture organization and the annual international festival of contemporary theatre that it produces in the coastal city of Zadar. The festival was founded in 1997 by a group of citizens who wanted to promote and present recent achievements of domestic and international contemporary performing arts through the lens of a Mediterranean setting. It is organized by the association Udruga Zadar snova, which was established the same year with the mission to promote and produce contemporary performing arts and to support civil society based on multiculturalism, tolerance and freedom of public expression. The festival takes place over eight days, usually between 7 and 14 August, and presents a selection of internationally renowned authors according to a principle of ultimate openness toward the format of the artistic message. Its program spans modern theatre, dance and music productions, art performances and interventions, and interdisciplinary works that challenge the fusion of arts and media. A defining feature is the use of ancient Dalmatian settings — squares, courtyards and the interiors of former churches or historical buildings in Zadar's old town — where the interaction of past and present cultures is meant to generate new communication channels between artists and audience. Since 2007 the program has also included a three-day review of world short film. Beyond the annual festival, the organization creates and runs cultural programs and events, seminars and workshops in the performing arts, provides production support to independent artistic projects at local and national level, promotes volunteering and activism, and organizes educational programs to strengthen the civil sector, youth associations and civic initiatives. It has a history of presenting and supporting independent artists, has produced a number of its own and collaborative productions, and is a member of regional and international culture networks. The project is run by the independent culture organization Zadar snova, and the program is made possible thanks to the support of the City of Zadar and Zadar County. As a brand, Zadar snova functions as a cultural festival trademark rather than a commercial product line: its "offerings" are curated editions of contemporary performance, its "market" is the regional and international performing-arts scene, and its positioning rests on site-specific programming in historic Mediterranean venues and openness to experimental formats.
History
Zadar snova was launched in 1997 by a group of citizens driven by the need to promote and present recent achievements of the domestic and international contemporary performing arts scene through the perspective of a Mediterranean environment. The same year, the association Udruga Zadar snova was established with the aim of promoting contemporary arts and a civil society founded on multiculturalism, tolerance and freedom of public expression. The association seeks to achieve continuity of contemporary cultural programming, encourage the artistic expression of young people, and strengthen civil society and the knowledge society. From its beginnings the festival has occupied an eight-day slot between 7 and 14 August, most often combining contemporary productions with the ancient locations of Dalmatian squares, courtyards, or the interiors of former church or historical buildings. It hosts selected productions by internationally renowned authors according to a concept of complete openness toward the format of artistic expression and production range, giving the audience the chance to see both large theatre performances and minimalist performances or other interdisciplinary artistic works touching the sphere of performing arts. In 2007 a three-day review of world short film was added to the program. Over the years the festival has built a history of presenting and supporting independent artists, has produced a number of its own and collaborative productions, and has become a member of regional and international culture networks. The organization also creates and implements cultural programs and events, seminars and workshops in the performing arts, provides production support to independent artistic projects at local and national level, promotes volunteering and activism, and organizes educational programs to strengthen the civil sector, youth associations and civic initiatives. The project is run by the independent culture organization Zadar snova, and the program is made possible thanks to the support of the City of Zadar and Zadar County. A representative recent edition is the 26th International Festival of Contemporary Theatre Zadar snova, held 8–14 August 2022, whose program included performances and interventions by artists such as Tina Keserović Jugo (Linz), Lara Mandli (Čakovec), Nina Kamenjarin (Split), Juraj Šantorić (Zagreb), Igor Zenzerović (Pula), Roko Nakić (Zagreb), Irena Boćkai (Zagreb), Siniša Labrović (Berlin) and Ivana Ivković (Belgrade), staged at venues including Narodni trg, Bedemi zadarskih pobuna, Forum, Park Vruljica, Trg sv. Krševana and Kalelarga.
