It operates two campuses: the City Campus at Kofar Nassarawa, Kano, and the main campus along General Muhammadu Buhari Way, Kofar Ruwa, Kano. The university was established to expand access to university education for secondary school leavers in Kano State, following a decision by the Kano State Government under Governor Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso to create a second university in the state on a City University model. A Technical Committee chaired by Prof. Lawan Alhassan Bichi was inaugurated on 24 November 2011 to work out the establishment. NWU is organised into faculties covering Basic Medical Science, Clinical Science, Computing, Education, Humanities, Law, Science, and Social & Management Science, and it also operates a College of Health Sciences. The university's mission is to provide educational training, research and community service for development while taking cognizance of the cultural heritage of the host community; its vision is to be a world-class citadel of learning providing practical education directed towards training knowledgeable, skilled and disciplined citizens. As a state-owned institution, NWU is governed through statutory offices including Visitor, Chancellor, Pro Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Governing Council and Management, supported by directorates and units. It is funded and supported through state resources and federal intervention schemes such as TETFund, which the university lists for high-impact national research, physical infrastructure and programme upgrade, academic staff training, library development, ICT support and entrepreneurship, among other areas. The university publishes news and updates on its website, including matriculation ceremonies, admissions cycles, and engagements with national officials.
