History

Yuhikaku was founded in 1877 (Meiji 10). Its original company name was 有史閣, and it started as a secondhand bookstore at Kanda Hitotsubashi-dori-cho 4-banchi in Tokyo; two years later it changed its name to 有斐閣 and entered publishing. Its publishing activity expanded in step with the development of scholarship in modern Japan: it started with law, moved into economics, and broadened into fields such as sociology, psychology, and business administration, concentrating on academic book publishing. In the summer of 1946, the year after the Pacific War ended, 美濃部達吉's 憲法撮要, which had been banned from sale due to the 天皇機関説事件, was republished as a revised edition, described as a forerunner of postwar academic revival; afterward it successively republished 六法全書 and published 新法律学辞典 and 社会学辞典. In 1957, for its 80th anniversary, it began publishing 法律学全集 (60 volumes), which took 28 years to complete and received the 毎日出版文化賞特別賞. It also published 有斐閣コンメンタール and planned 法律相談シリーズ in response to demands from the legal profession and practitioners. It created series such as 有斐閣双書, 有斐閣ブックス, 有斐閣Sシリーズ, 有斐閣アルマ, and New Liberal Arts Selection, and later LEGAL QUEST, 有斐閣ストゥディア, テキストブックス[つかむ], ポケット法学, y-knot, LAWYERS' KNOWLEDGE, and 法律実務家のための基礎知識. It also published 有斐閣新書, 有斐閣選書, and 有斐閣リブレ. As digitalization advanced, it promoted digital development, including database services (YODB etc.), on-demand publishing, and the paid subscription service 有斐閣Online (YOL).
