History
Ystad Saltsjöbad was founded in 1897 following a motion by Ystad pharmacist and local politician Salomon Smith and fellow resident John Tengberg, who proposed a hotel and meeting place by the sea in Sandskogen. The decision to build a bath hotel named Ystad Saltsjöbad was made that year. The chosen site was the same where the current main building was erected in 1927, though slightly closer to the sea. The original hotel was a three-story wooden building with 12 rooms, a dining room, and common areas, designed by architect Peter Boisen. It also featured verandas with decorative woodwork typical of the era. An annex containing warm and cold bathhouses was added. Around 1913, a fire broke out, leading to a temporary structure until a new main building was constructed in 1927, designed by August Ewe; this building now houses the restaurant and some hotel rooms. In 1936, a smaller restaurant extension was added. Since then, numerous additions have been made. In 2007, the operating company of Ystad Saltsjöbad was acquired by ESS Hotell. In 2012, the spa was expanded with a new section called The Creek experience. Today, the resort has 139 rooms, 13 meeting rooms, multiple restaurants and bars, and a full spa, positioning itself as Scandinavia's leading resort.
